Grizzlies-Hammerheads
Published Saturday, April 26, 2008
(6:07 p.m.) Tha-tha-tha-tha's all folks. The Grizzlies offense couldn't click quite like they needed it to in this one as they fall 55-37.
They're back home next week against San Angelo. Maybe a little home cookin is just what the doctor ordered.
(5:59 p.m.) Back in action after the injury timeout, the extra point is good, Grizzlies pull within 55-37.
(5:55 p.m.) 4:49 left to play.
You know the game's entered it's final stretch when I'm counting down the time left to play.
The Grizzlies get the ball back on Shane Tufford's fumble recovery, but all they can do at this point is make it look better.
...
Which they just did, with Solomon Jones getting behind the defense for a 44-yard score.
55-36 pending the extra point as there's an injury timeout.
(5:46 p.m.) Both teams seem to be ready to end this.
The teams just traded go-nowhere drives, leaving it still a 55-30 game with just over 7 minutes to play.
(5:37 p.m.) Turn over on downs.
The Grizzlies drove to the CC 5-yard line, but they couldn't finish off the dirve. A field goal obviously does them do good at this point, and Ward's fourth-down pass to Jones was broken up.
The third quarter just ended 55-30 CC.
(5:25 p.m.) Well that didn't last long.
That, being hope for a comeback.
Almond hit Anderson for a 24-yard strike and the extra point is good, giving the Hammerheads their biggest lead of the day 55-30.
(5:22 p.m.) The Grizzlies stay at least within striking distance.
Ward finds Solomon Jones over the middle for a 17-yard touchdown. The extra point misses wide, 48-30 CC.
(5:15 p.m.) This one could be in the books.
Johnny Anderson returns a Ward interception yards for a score as the Hammerheads have doubled up the Grizzlies for a 48-24 lead.
(5:10 p.m.) After a quick Hammerheads drive, the Grizzlies have their work cut out for them.
With the Hammerheads starting at the Grizzlies 10, Skyler Anderson found paydirt with a 3-yard scamper for a 41-24 Corpus lead.
(5:06 p.m.) The Grizzlies get points on their first drive of the half.
After driving to the Hammerheads 3-yard line, the Grizzlies settle for three points as Brian Stuvek connects on a 19-yard field goal.
34-24 Grizzlies.
Fairbanks tries an onside kick on the ensuing kickoff but Corpus Chrsti recovers for a first-and-10 at the Fairbanks 10.
(4:41 p.m.) Oh so close.
Working on a second-and-4 from the Corpus Chrsti 5, and with just 1.2 seconds left, Ward's scrable comes up 1 yard short.
After looking to pass, Ward tucked the ball and was tackled just shy of the goal line.
HALFTIME
34-21 Hammerheads.
(4:36 p.m.) One last chance this half.
The Grizzlies get one last chance to pull within a score before half as the Hammerheads turn the ball over on downs at the Fairbanks 22 with 48 seconds left.
(4:28 p.m.) Spoke just too soon.
Wali Mumin picked off Ward to return the ball to Corpus Christi.
1st-and-10 Hammerheads at their own 11.
Still 34-21 Hammerheads.
(4:27 p.m.) The Grizzlies have a chance to get right back in this one before the break.
Terell Sutton comes up with a big interception at the Fairbanks 5-yard line, taking it all the way back to the Corpus Christi 22.
After a penalty first-and-13 for the Griz with 2:19 to play in the half.
(4:19 p.m.) Solomon Jones just came up big for the Grizzlies.
Ward hit Jones near the right boards about 11 yards down field, then avoided a hoard of Hammerheads defenders sprinting at least another 20 yards for the touchdown.
EDIT: They're calling it a 29-yard touchdown catch for Jones.
The extra point is good, 34-21 Hammerheads.
(4:17 p.m.) If the Grizzlies don't want to be down too far at half, they need to get going here.
Fred Wallace had another 1-yard touchdown run, putting CC up 34-14 after a missed extra point.
Around 5 minutes left in the half.
(4:14 p.m.) It's turned into a kicking game.
Fairbanks goes 3-and-out, punting the ball away to CC, which takes over at the 25-yard line.
Still 28-14 Hammerheads. 6 minutes left in the half.
(4:08 p.m.) The Grizzlies catch a break.
After Corpus started inside the Fairbanks 10, a bad snap sent the Hammerheads all the way back to their own 19, forcing the Hammerheads to punt away.
Fairbanks first-and-10 on their own 10.
(4:04 p.m.) The Grizzlies couldn't get anything done on this drive. Then it got worse.
After driving to the CC 16-yard-line, Ward was hit and fumbled back to the Fairbanks 24, ending the drive.
Fairbanks tried do the old field goal that's reall a punt, but they lost the hold and the Hammerheads take over inside the Fairbanks 10.
(4 p.m.) End 1Q.
28-14 Hammerheads, with Fairbanks driving, now around the CC 16-yard line.
(3:56 p.m.) The Hammerheads had one touchdown called back, but Fairbanks wouldn't get so lucky a second time.
After a short touchdown run was called back on a holding play, the Hammerheads found paydirt on their next play as Almond hit Nathaniel Dunn for an 11-yard scoring strike.
48 seconds left in the first quarter 28-14 CC. (3:45 p.m.) The Grizzlies took advantage of the good field position and found an important answer.
Ward pulled Fairbanks within 21-14 after scoring on a 4-yard draw.
The score was set up by a 20-yard strike from Ward to Anthony Parks.
(3:41 p.m.) It's too soon to say anything is a must-do at this point, but after another Corpus Christi score, the Grizzlies have to want to keep pace. They don't seem like they're going to get too many stops.
Fred Wallace plunged in from the goal line, a 1-yard touchdown scamper to give the Hammerheads a 21-7 lead.
After a good return Fairbanks starts in Hammerheads territory. 1st-and-10 and the CC 24.
(3:35 p.m.) This one ends on downs.
Ward connected on a couple of completions to drive Fairbanks into Hammerheads territory, but they couldn't find a way to finish off the drive, with Ward having to throw the ball away on fourth down.
Still 14-7 Corpus Christi.
(3:31 p.m.) This drive could tell us a lot about the game.
Fairbanks will have to rely on Damion Ward to move them down the field this time -- not getting strong starting field position this time. If Fairbanks answers right back, I'd expect a competitive game.
(3:29 p.m.) The Hammerheads answer right back.
Corpus drove right down the field and Dustin Almond hit Ed Ginnings for their second score tonight, connecting on a 3-yard shovel pass.
The extra point is good, 14-7 Hammerheads.
(3:25 p.m.) Coach John Fourcade talked about the importance of being able to run inside the Corpus Christi 10-yard line and so far, so good.
Jeff Flannagan went up the middle for a 3-yard touchdown scamper to leave the team knotted 7-7 in an action-packed first quarter.
The Hammerheads scored on the first game from scrimmage on a Dustin Almond TD pass.
14:03 still left to play in the first, all knotted up.
(3:00) I've got the NFL Draft cranking on the TV and Grizzlies football on the radio. I'm in a state of football nirvana right now.
But let's not fool ourselves right here, this is just about a must-win game for the Grizzlies. They need SOMETHING to go right for them.
They've been going the wrong way of late and they have to reverse that trend -- fast.
No Bartik will make things harder, as will a lack of Serre Rodgers, who was a force on the defensive end. But after coming close last time at Corpus Christi, the Grizz need to find a way to win this time around.
its going to be tough to compete in this league with always having to add new players for the out of state games. maybe if we could get more home games it would be better.
if a player doesnt practice regularly its going to be a up hill battle to complete with football players from the "Great" state of Texas where football rules.
then again what do I know?
Maybe it time for coach to put his "cheat but dont get caught" theory in action to get a win :)
You know, hambone, I was thinking the exact same thing. That's why I'm interested to see how they do when they get back to Fairbanks.
Fourcade said yesterday that he thinks just playing in front of 4,000 cheering fans will make a big difference and he wants the opponents to "see what it's like to travel."
