Romney supporter grits his teeth and gets ready for McCain

Published Thursday, February 7, 2008

It's a sad day for Mitt Romney supporters in Alaska.

Though they helped the former governor of Massachussets win the 49th state by a large margin, he still trailed frontrunner John McCain by hundreds of delegates after Super Tuesday.

And this morning, Romney announced that he's abandoning his campaign for the presidency.

"I'm sad that he decided to drop out, but I look forward to McCain and hope for the best," said Pete Higgins, a dentist who headed up the Romney campaign in Fairbanks and brought one his five sons to Fairbanks to stump for his candidate father.

With Romney out of the race, there's little to stop McCain from securing the party's nomination.

Alaska wasn't so kind to McCain, the 71-year-old senator from Arizona. He placed fourth here in total number of votes, just behind Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who trailed in a distant fourth place nationally after Super Tuesday.

Higgins said he would still like to see former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee get the Republican nomination, but he doubts that will happen. He's not the biggest McCain fan, but the longtime Republican said that McCain is better than either candidate from the left.

"I'd rather see (McCain) than Hillary or Obama," Higgins said. "We can deal with McCain and whatever we don't like about him."

How do other Alaskan Republicans out there feel? Are you willing to accept McCain as the GOP nominee?
