Did anyone else notice the weather report says "smoke"???
Is there a fire that I don't know about? Air is clear and lovely here in North Pole...

For those of you keeping us free, thanks!

PANOMAN- I'll keep an eye out the next time I go to Delta and se if I can find a milemarker for the mailbox.

And I can't wait to get down to Delta, where I think we'll feel more attatched. North Pole is nice enough, but we'd prefer something more rural.

I have finally seen wildlife in North Pole! Starting with my husband saying "WHOA! C'mere!" I ran to the bay window in our dining room and came face to, ahem, "rear" with a moose hiney. Momma was standing, keeing a close watch on her young'un, a fairly new calf by the looks of him.
We also encountered another momma on her baby on the bike path along Richardson Hwy when we walked into town for a coffee and to get hubby a haircut.
You can read the details (particularly how a city girl felt about this close encounter!LOL) on my blog:

North Pole Festival was fun today, but HOT and I got nibbled on by one of these beetles everyone keeps talking about. Didn't hurt too much, but sure surprised me.
Finally have everything unpacked and when hubby returns from work after the weekend, we are going exploring... chena hot springs, denali, maybe even a trip to Valdez in the near future, etc

Hehehe... I had one of these crawl into my shirt today while at the North Pole Festival and give me a litle nibble on my belly.
The bite wasn't THAT bad, and the bugs are slow enough that you CAN just pluck them off and toss them.

My friend's son catches them for the chickens. The chickens do battle over this delicacy, and go crazy when one of these little "treats" gets thrown into the coop.

Out of curiousity... I've heard them called spruce beetles... are they the same thing?

KingFisher- was cracking up about your forecast!

Um, maybe the funniest thing to me about the weather report is how the loss of daylight minutes is reported, as gravely as someone's funeral being announced, with Ted Kopel seriousness.
Maybe I'm crazy, but I see it as a GAIN of a few minutes of night! LOL

PANOMAN- do you have a place on Rich Hwy? I drove down to Delta Junction yesterday and could have sworn I passed a place with a decorated mailbox that said Panoman on it???
Of course, I was also trying to avoid a very large, very dumb moose who thought it would be nice to stand in the road and stare at me (and the cars behind me) screeching to a halt. This moose stood there and started at me for a full minute before decided she would be kind enough to let me pass.

Greetings from North Pole this morning. Fairbanks looks beautiful this morning and it looks like we'll be making the trip into town, as baby is sick and needs a doctor this morning. *sigh*

Hey everyone! We have FINALLY gotten our furniture and I've been busy unpacking but did manage to take a break today and do the Mosquito Meander 5K fun run/walk.
Anyone else make it out there? I'd love to know if I "saw" any of you down there!

Mama_Sibe: it was polarmark who gave you that info, but here's some more...
Also look in North Pole and look for private renters instead of apartments.

As a hint- if you can afford temporary lodging for a few weeks, wait until you are here. A lot of people in the area do NOT advertise thier rentals in the classifieds or online. We jumped into a lease over the web because it looked like there was a shortage of rentals. Reality- there are plenty of rentals, just not advertised.

Um, I do know a dog friendly rental that will be available in Spring 2009- the one I'm living in! If you are interested, send a private message and I can hook you up with our landlord! Rent is reasonable, but you do pay your own fuel. (There's a wood stove as a "secondary" heat source, which we are using as our primary!) Plus, you'll have the advantage of having all the kinks worked out before you get here. hahaha

In spite of our initial complaints, the place is a sound little house, but we were actually looking for something a little more rural, and will probably be moving closer to Delta Junction where my husband works.

Just wondering... all these dad complaining about paying child support, do you spend time with your kids? Is this the same attitude you have over your sons and daughters, that you "have to" do this thing?

If you are REALLY bent out of shape about "having to pay", you can always go back to court, tell the judge you don't want to pay anymore, and be willing to have reduced or no visitation, since you "have to" do this thing.

As a child of deadbeat dad-who still owes me and mom over $25,000 even though I'm well into my 30s- I found it was easier to let my dad off the hook and tell HIM, not the child support department, to never darken my door or mailbox again.

Verbumsap- thanks for plugging Susan Stevenson's site! And y'all email her or post on her blog if she inspires you. She loves feedback and she's sweet as pie to talk to. She was a great help in sorting out all my AK questions before we moved up here.

Ok. What's an iceworm? This is the second time this week I've heard about them from someone!

Did you know that there are also no EARTHWORMS here??? Found this out from my landlord this weekend.

Relocating advice: do not, repeat, DO NOT sign a lease before you see the place up close and personal. We are making do with our current place and it's not terrible, but it's not what we thought it would be either.

Also, be prepared to realize how "spoiled" you were in the lower 48! While we love it here, we don't find a lot of the things we used to like, and it took some time to realize the things we weren't crazy about in our rental home are actually the "norm" around here... debris piles, smelly well water, or half-finished home renovation projects (Home Depot seems to run out of all the things our landlord needs to finish).

Before this sounds too negative, I want to add that we DO love it here, plan on staying, and are adapting to our new environment, but if you are relocating and think you'll find the same comforts of "home", um, you won't. :)

I will also say this- in addition to some of the things we've just had to accept, there's a whole new freedom that the lower 48 didn't give us. No one cares that you smell like well water (because everyone does), no one cares if you haven't gotten an eyebrow wax in two months or if you are wearing jeans and sweatshirts to the grocery. As corny as it sounds, I felt like a huge burden was lifted off my shoulders when I stepped off the plane and realized it was ok to just BE, and to be myself, without having to put on pretenses, or heels and a lipstick smile for that matter!

Ok. Enough babbling on. I'm not to shameless to take free advertising. If you want to watch this southern family adapt to life in The Last Frontier visit:

teehee... no snakes is one of the many reasons I love this place. My biggest fear when going to the woodpile for wood is now spiders, not slithery things with fangs!

I heard that AK does not have poisonous spiders, is this true?
Do you have to worry about ticks here?

I'm so glad I don't look like a tourist (no white sneakers). Am going to have to adapt to environment quickly though.. heater went out last night, needs to be replaced, and starting a fire in the wood stove at 2:30 in the morning was NO FUN. Next time, blankets and sweatshirts and back to bed!
