Of all the things these students could work on, why this and at this time? The death was tragic, the imprisonment of young people for the best part of their lives also tragic. Whether or not justice was done, the case was heard, appealed and re-appealed. Isn't there something more timely and less divisive for these journalism students to tackle?

I do not agree with this and it has nothing to do with the mayor's skills or lack of skills or his relationship with the Assembly. The wildfires were an emergency. What we are experiencing with fuel prices is not an emergency. Any proposals to act on a biomass plant or things of that nature should go through a public process. It can be an expedited process, but they only have to give 5 business days' notice for public meetings. Fine to expedite the request for proposals too, give 'em a few weeks to submit things. No one makes major purchases for their home without getting estimates and checking out the vendors. This is not a natural disaster where there is an emergency like a fire or earthquake.

I dread this time of year because the fire works freak out my animals and yes, of course I leave them in the house. New Years Eve is even worse. The animal shelter fills up with animals that take off out of fear. I can only imagine how scary it is for wildlife that have nowhere else to go. Autistic kids too have a really rough time with it. There are public displays around town and folks should go there who enjoy them.

My sentiments exactly. I hope to contact my legislators over the summer and ask them to pass a law that many other states have making it illegal to talk on the cell phone while operating a motor vehicle.

I think street lights for public safety in the downtown area are essential but the Christmas lights really bother me. Especially when they go up before Thanksgiving around town and stay up into February. It's a waste of energy and it pollutes the night sky. Why not have a few nice displays around town for those who like them? This should be done by a volunteer group when times are tight like this.

The ordinance does not result in an increase in staff and the amount budgeted for the care of sick and injured animals has not changed since 2002 despite rising veterinary fees. So this is not costing the taxpayers more money. What it will do is put an added burden on the already-strained staff and facility if the public decides to dump more underaged litters because the shelter does not have a nursery area or staff to handle round the clock feedings. Generally there is no reason why people cannot keep a litter until it's eight weeks old but unexpected circumstances do arise. Nevertheless, many people either have problems of one sort or another and/or are dysfunctional and unfortunately, their children and animals are the victims. If more folks agree to foster these little ones, it gives them a chance. Best of all would be not having unintentional litters. Two becomes six becomes thirty-six within about eight months. Animal lovers contributed over $56,000 to the Shelter in 2007. Some of it went to veterinary costs, some to shelter improvements and equipment. It's posted on the FNSB website under the Animal Control link.

I have slashed my budget and taken a second job. I suggest everyone who can work a second job makes plans to do so. I sold some items I no longer use and stuck that money into the bank. I have eliminated restaurant meals entirely. I was planning to replace a few appliances but won't. No new clothes, books, etc. I have cut my retirement savings and charitable contributions. I now really scrutinize how the charities handle their money. I've lived through tough economic times before and will do so again. So will everyone else.

I find trophy hunting pretty barbaric. I can understand hunting for food and then hey, if you want to mount the head on your wall, go for it. And I certainly understand killing to protect oneself. But to go out and kill an animal just because hey, it's fun to kill. Something is wrong with that. If there are communities that need sustainable economic development, there has to be a better way than this.

Good story, nice to read something positive and total family-oriented as a lead story. I really liked the comments about the dogs needing to be dogs that have drive and that it is easier to rein in than to motivate. It's good these folks are sensitive to which dogs would love to compete and do agility, and which would rather follow their noses or lounge around. Unfortunately too many people try to get a dog to be something it just isn't. Then when they are disappointed, rather than readjusting their expectations, they either ignore the dog or drop it off at the shelter or let it run the neighborhood. Great about the rescue dog winning!
