Someone needs to be held responsible for these kids. Our bikepath in North Pole would be the perfect place to go for a bike ride (as it was intended) or a walk, but,it can be dangerous with these people (not only kids) racing down them at sometimes over 40 mph. If you go and take a look at our bikepath you can see the damage the ATV's have done. They have eroded the edges and I would say in about 2 more years there won't be much left. They are clearly marked not for motorized vehicles.
The scary part is when one of these kids wrecks their 4-wheelers on your property. That is what happened to me 4 years ago. 14 year old boy out at 1:30 am in July. Racing his ATV - jumping driveways. Jumps my driveway and hurts himself. Now I am being sued. Let me tell you, 4 years is a long time to wonder what is going to happen to you because of someone else's screw up that has nothing to do with you...I was in bed sleeping. I have thousands of $$'s out trying to make sure I am not held accountable and haven't heard from my attorney in 2 years! Don't even have a clue what is happening with the case. Can't call and ask because it will rack up more expense! Funny thing is where he wrecked isn't even considered my property - it was the area between the highway and the bikepath.
So, you may want to try and put this on the parents, but some parents are just useless. I was able to look up his "parent" on the Alaska Court System and able to find that the guy doesn't even take responsibility for himself. This is going to be the problem you find with most people that let their kids go galavanting on these machines. They are sort of a "babysitting" toy for their kids.
So, I do think the cops should be involved. When you can be faced with losing everything you have based on a child illegally riding an ATV on your property without permission, then the law needs to be enforced. Besides that, we have a curfew in this town and the boy and his family still did not face accountability for the laws he broke.

I still remember watching the news report about this attack. It was so upseting and truly a turning point for our town.
This boy was so young and looked like the "All American Boy" in his photos. He reminded me of my brother and I cried for him & his mother while I watched.
We found out later that this boy was getting into trouble, just like the boys that are accused of this.
I have read everything I was able to find on this story because I have always felt like they had some of the wrong people. I have thought that they may have had 1 or 2 of the people involved, but those boys were too cowardly to come forward and clear their friends.
I have always thought that Chris Stone was involved. It just makes sense considering John was found in Chris' pants.
It is amazing though, that after all these years no one has come forward with any "real" evidence.
I never though Roberts car could have been involved - where is the forensic evidence??
It will be interesting to see how the rest of this turns out. I sure hope they have all of the people involved with this, because I know that with everything I have read (and I am white) I could NOT have convicted some of these boys!!

I wouldn't mind these bugs, but every time I see one I assume there is another on my back!
I have been squeezed by those pinchers when I was a teen and it hurts like heck!
It's pretty easy to whack them to the ground while they are trying to land on you.
It's just the one on my back I'm always afraid of.
I saw 3 people with them on their backs today at the North Pole celebration - I figured better them than me : )

Sounds like LA has all the answers. Apparantly she must have witnessed the accident....

Why aren't there training programs up here for this?
Rather than a huge bonus, offer free training for Alaskans willing to sign a 5 year contract to stay in Alaska.
I'd be game...

I think that regardless of how old this girl was that this family deserves some answers! I am ashamed at what some of the people wrote here. We all know that there are definate race issues in this town. Always have been & will never change. Troopers are probably worse than most based on the things they have dealt with.
Having said that, I have a feeling that this lady would have got more sympathy had she been complaining about her dog getting run over!
This family deserves to know how & why their step son was killed! Could you imagine losing your child and never having the details of what happened? His fault or her fault - let these people have closure!
I for one find this situation ridiculous and I apologize to the family for some of the things I read here. Good luck in getting your answers!

If you think zero people have died from being stoned - sorry, you are wrong. Judgement is affected therefore you are going to screw up.
Maybe you should also take a look at the long term issues, such as colon cancer & mental health. Marijuana is just as much a problem as alcohol.
That said, people are going to do it regardless, so yes, I agree with you as far as legalization goes. Legalize it and tax the living crap out of it.

Well, I imagine it will be worse this year. I figure after struggling to pay my heat this winter I may just decide it is cheaper and more rational to become a chronic inebriate.
Anyone with me?

Every ATV I have seen has a sticker from the manufacturer that says you must be 16 to operate this ATV. Also, if you go and buy a new one the dealership is going to make you sign a piece of paper that states no child under the age of 16 will be riding this vehicle at any time. You can check with the local dealers.
I've talked to my representatives office (Coghill) regarding my situation with no luck. I have never spoke to him, just his assistant. Would it be asking too much if we had legistlature where if someone hurts themselves on your property (with no fault on the property owners behalf) that they cannot sue you! It is totally ludicrous & I am really disappointed that I cannot get this situation to END!
