Mamasan, for your information most state employees are getting a whopping 3% pay increase on July 1, and again next year. Probably better than most private employers, since a lot of businesses are probably struggling to keep employees on the books let alone give raises, but all this extra revenue is not going to state employees. And, if you think State employees have it so good, go get a job with the State. They have plenty of vacancies because they can't seem to recruit or retain qualified people.

"The best efforts of workers at the state Department of Transportation can only do so much to make the highways passable and safe."
This is very true. What is also true is the governor's political appointment refuses to impose spring weight restrictions on these routes because it would be a temporary inconvenience the same truckers that complain constantly about the conditions of these roads!
Political games go both ways. Build the gas line, fix the roads, but don't do anything that will inconvenience the people that use it even if it is a preventative measure that would save hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Jan Thacker did write about this, but I agree, it's front-page worthy. I am so thrilled that our schools are finally recognizing the importance of vocational education and that students are excelling in the programs. Congratulations Austin and Justin!

Why do so many people just come out swinging? I thought the letter was polite and just offering a suggestion. How is that whiney? They are right, Hutch is working on establishing their sports programs and they should be recognized the same as any other school. As someone who grew up here playing local sports, I can tell you it is extremely exciting for a kid to open the sports page and see their name/team name/picture. When parents and the community support these activities, I believe that reduces the likelihood of those same kids opening up and reading about themselves in the police blotter. Yes, we are fortunate we live in a small community that covers all these events, just try to provide even coverage, that is the only message here!

And on top of it all, APD won't pay out a reward because they didn't get a first shot at the arrest? There is something wrong with this all around.

The courthouse is brand new and beautiful, why does it need modifications? Has any one looked at all the empty building space around this town? Yet the government has to keep building new. This is unbelievable.

alaskan family-talk to the City of Fairbanks about your concerns. There is a noise ordinance that prohibits the contractor from working at night. And if they were working at night, people would be complaining about the noise anyway. And if people weren't complaining about the construction, they'd be complaining that the road was falling apart and needed fixing. People have to bear some inconvenience to get improvements.
