Hi Matthew,

Thanks for the comment. Just wanted to let you know we put together the "Who would be in charge?" story the day that the VP announcement was made. It was published Aug. 29. Here's the link:

On Questions remain on Palin vetting

JoeBtfsplk,

I respectfully disagree with you about the first words of the story, but I realize readers will have their own views on the words--and that's fine.

I chose those words to have an informal feel on what I knew was going to be a dry story; budget stories usually are drier than the surface of the Mojave Desert (Yes, I've been there many a time). And, of course, the words are accurate: Palin has for a long time pitched herself as a fiscal conservative. There's no question about it. All a person needs to do is look at her comments over the years.

On A closer look at Palin’s budget cut claims

Good morning, readers,

All the budget numbers were verified by the director of the governor's Office of Management and Budget, who was very cooperative for this report and who corrected one of my numbers before publication. She said it is a fair and acceptable use of the numbers. She concurred that general fund spending is the benchmark by which budgets are usually judged.

The director explained why the budget went up, and that is included in the story.

I also explained the premise of the story to the McCain-Palin campaign on more than one occasion. The campaign, after offering an initial vague comment, then chose not to respond to multiple follow-up requests for specific comment on what the numbers show.

Thanks for reading and considering the story.

To DecidedtostayinAK,

Glad you liked the story about Nellie Miller of North Pole. I'd just like to point out that the story was in the Friday edition of the News-Miner and was on the front page, where, as you note, it deserved to be.

Our story was picked up by The Associated Press and distributed nationwide, which is how it ended up at FOX News, where you found it.

Here's the link to our story, which includes a couple of photographs of Mrs. Miller.

Mike,

Thanks for pointing that out. I've fixed the paragraph, which now reads like this:

A news release from the department said that "In school year 2007-2008, nearly six out of 10 Alaska public schools made adequate yearly progress under the federal No Child Left Behind Act.... That represents a decline from nearly 62 percent of Alaska public schools in 2005-2006 and nearly 66 percent in 2006-2007."

Here's the scoop on Scott's fish, as forwarded to me by News-Miner staffer Tim Mowry:

According to Alaska State Troopers, Kawasaki’s fundrasier is within the law because he is not charging a fee for the fish or the fundraiser, a fact that Kawasaki confirmed.
“If anybody wants to come to the event they can,” Kawasaki said. “We’re not charging.”
Lt. Lantz Dahlke with Alaska Wildlife Troopers in Fairbanks, said it would be illegal to charge a per plate fee for the fish or admission to the fundraiser to eat the fish, but if Kawasaki wants to donate it to his cause for free, that’s his right.
After dip netting at Chitina for 25 years, Kawasaki said he was well aware of the law.
“I know what a personal-use fishery is,” he said. “I completely know the law. This is fully within the law.”
Unlike a lot of dip-netters who made the long drive to Chitina only to come up short of fish this summer, Kawasaki said he and two other dip-netters made the trip to Chitina in late June and had good success.
“We limited out in about six hours,” Kawasaki said. “We lucked out.”
