I understand what people are saying when they say that if they want to have shootouts, deploy them and let them shoot the bad guys. But, as I read that, I sit here and think that there are husbands, fathers, sons & grandsons that are deployed and here these gang members are, supposedly on the same "side" as the other soldiers and they're going to deploy soon with our loved ones. If they were having a shootout amongst each other on College Road and putting many innocent people in the middle of their gunfire then what's going to stop them from doing it when they're away at war and they're surrounded by their fellow soldiers who were unlucky enough to get these gang members in their unit.

There was a two month old baby in the middle of all this. To them, they're fighting a war of their own and the Crips & Bloods are two of the most dangerous gangs out there. It's extremely scary and I agree that the post commander needs to step in here and do something about it but like a lot of things in the military, the higher ups just brush it off like it's not a big deal. Our soldiers are deploying next month and they should feel that they can trust the soldiers around them. They have enough enemies to worry about in Iraq rather than wonder if the guy standing beside them is going to turn his back on them. And, I don't know about you but this would make me feel extremely uneasy knowing my husband might get stuck in the middle of these gang's gunfights.

fbkreader: Thank you. However, my reply in my own defense got deleted, hers is still there. Can someone explain that?? It does violate the terms of the user agreement and it's still there. I just want to know how many wives would be comfortable going to dinner with their husbands only to have what happened to us, happen. If her comment gets deleted, great. If not, well......I'm going to leave it at that.

i thought they did offer a military discount. maybe not.

i'm not trying to bash jay, but that is honestly how i felt about eating there. if there would have been comment cards, i would have filled one out and said the same thing that i said earlier. if it's a "family" restaurant then there is no reason for the waitresses to dress the way they do. if you want to see women wearing little/no clothes then go support the businesses that are open for that purpose.

we don't live in alaska anymore so i don't know what changes have taken place in the last few months since we left but judging by some of the comments, i doubt the dress code has changed. if he wants it to be a family restaurant then he needs to change a few things about it. i'll never forget the night that my husband and i went there for dinner and the waitress leaned over to get my husbands plate and her breasts were in his face. i was not a very happy wife or customer and if i remember correctly, she didn't get a tip.

i know that someone said they saw jay and it looked like he had been crying and i'm sorry if any of these comments hurt him, but he needs to know what is going on in his restaurant(s) and why people aren't going to them anymore. i'm sure he's upset that he didn't see some of these things earlier and that had he maybe taken some steps to prevent this earlier, things could be different.

cmunro-i agree with you about the "strip club".

i couldn't believe what the waitresses were wearing when we ate there in the summer. as soon as the weather got warm, the skin started showing. i don't know the owner personally so i am not going to attack him as a person, but i agree that this is not a family restaurant because of the way the waitresses dress. before we moved out of fairbanks we had family visit from the east coast and we wanted to take them there because we liked the food, but we weren't about to take our grandparents into the restaurant to see the skimpy outfits.

the food was good but the clothing is optional/minimal for the waitstaff.

i don't think that would be the best idea. when we took our car into the park in the spring when we could go to the teklanika rest stop, people didn't know how to drive in the park. most can't drive on a normal day, not to mention one that you're on a gravel road in the middle of "nowhere". we were trying to enjoy the wildlife and scenery while doing the SPEED LIMIT through the park and people were flying past us. also, when we stopped the car for a herd of caribou CROSSING the road, some idiot flew past us and looked over at us like we were in the wrong. he then had to slam on the breaks to avoid hitting them because he was in such a "hurry" and more worried about giving us the evil eye for pulling over to allow the herd to stop...although 10 minutes before he was in the one parked in the middle of the road while he took a walk on the frozen teklanika river.

it's a national park and it is a protected area so let's leave it that way. i loved the simple fact that when i went into the park it was endless miles of beauty away from the hustle & bustle of every day work. you allow personal vehicles in there and things will never be the same in the park.

Lizzy & Harriet: My first week living in Alaska in the first week of September '06 I saw the Northern Lights driving home from Denali National Park with my mom pretty late at night. That was my first sight of them and I was in awe of them as I was driving.

My last week living in Alaska was the end of August '07 and I had family come up to help me move home because I was pregnant at the time and we did get to see some beautiful light shows of the Northern Lights. It was fairly late at night but that was one of my favorite things about living in Alaska so I was so excited to see them before I left. There were nights that I saw them from our apartment and I would get in the car and drive outside of town so I could see them better away from the lights of the parking lot.

Also, our flight left that week around 1am from Fairbanks and I remember sitting on the plane and watching the lights dance across the sky for about an hour or more during the flight.

So, as long as they're cooperating, you should be able to see the lights.

It looks like a beautiful morning in Fairbanks this morning. The temperature was hovering around 90 degrees yesterday and the humidity was high.....I'm really missing the Fairbanks summers!!!
