Well, another 'catastrophic event' is unlikely since we have term limits on the Presidency, but there is one thing people need to remember. Living with less is NOT living without. We could easily take a 20% hit in the amount of available fuel and we'd be just fine, becasue we use so much. Ya, you may not be able to get a $10 plastic swimming pool and a $39 barbque set. And, god forbid, you might actually have to commute. So Madmax is not around the corner, however, some people may FEEL like it's Madmax becasue of what they have grown accustomed to. Unfortunately we are not able to simply adjust our infrastructure and lifestyle overnight. But we have had two years of warning, and if you don't 'get it' by now then brother, you're in for some very disappointing times...

He didn't cut them because he 'wanted to', he cut them as the next box store wanted to be MORE visible and asked him to. How much more visible than a giant, out of place, wart on the face of our community could it be? The point is that it was totally unnecessary. True, he can do what he wants with the property and we have no right to keep him from doing some thing dumb or that is in poor taste. However, we do have the right to tell him what we think!

>I guess the only way it will stop is when nobody can afford gas and fuel and freeze and starve to death.
Ya, after all it's right there in the Constitution, Life, Liberty Pursuit of happiness and cheap & abundant energy for all.
People who seem to cry the loudest are usually the most dependent. That's right, you have become DEPENDENT on cheap energy. No different from the people who you probably belittle for being dependent on State and Govt' welfare. No difference in my book.

>the Alaska I would want to see if I traveled thousands of miles would take a while to get to from Fairbanks.
You and me both, that's why the Denali Highway and the Taylor are my favorite drives. But when (our) Guests come up here they are coming from concrete jungles and even just driving to the Pipeline is experiencing Alaska. Just depends on your point of view.

You forgot our soulless, monolithic granite shrine to justice.

With regard to the trees, when the 'Authority' speaks, developers act - well not ALL developers, just most....

Whoa there. Yes our City core is as lousy and unplanned as any other. But what Fairbanks DOES have is the ability to take a 10 or 15 minute drive and view beautiful, unspoiled scenery. Not to mention actual peace and quiet. THAT is increasingly an attraction you don't find in other destinations. Unfortunately the tour companies currently run their guests through here so fast they're lucky to see anything but our completely stupid museum, ridiculous courthouse / Marriott downtown and a traffic packed College Road. It's sad, but things do change, and Creamers Field is nice and the pipeline is unique so there are some remaining sites in Fairbanks.

Hemp, isn't that the stuff that makes kids go crazy? Ya, like Lithium, Prozac, Ritalin, Haldol, Mellaril and several others that have, in the last few years, had a 400% increase in the number of prescriptions written for CHILDREN. Give me a break already, who's running this country anyway? (Don't answer that, you'll just pi$$ me off more.)
Legalize it, tax it, educate against it, release the pot smoking criminals and pay for the apprehension and incarceration of REAL criminals. Do it today.

>And Fairbanks deserves a fishery.
What did we do in order to deserve it?
That's like our 'Representative' saying other states have more NOAA Stations per capita than Alaska, therefore we DESERVE to have more built here. Not, of course, that outside states perhaps have too many.....

I stand corrected. I fired off 'cause I'm tired of whiners as well, especially the City. I spend a huge amount of my own time getting the word out that selling the City utilities was a bad idea but I haven't been nearly as fired up on GVEA as I probably should be. Having a new baby will take some of the drive and energy out of you. Hopefully GVEA is starting to get it that people, and now our city / boro are pushing for changes. Unfortunately, I happen to think that electricity at $.22 per kwh is still relatively cheap for what you get in return. I don't like paying for it, but that doesn't mean I'm prepared to riot in the streets either. But vote for change in GVEA's election, oh ya.
