Consider the cost of the war in Iraq:

$4,681 per household.
$1,721 per person.
$341.4 million per day.

That's a lot of health care!

It threatens the polar bears. It makes it hard for them to breathe. Smoke from firefighters is very toxic.

Golly Oly,

I'm referring to all those who are seeking to open ANWR, regardless of political affiliation. I'm sure that includes a number of democrats as well as republicans. At least Clinton confined his immoral acts to the Whitehouse. He didn't involve us in a horrible war, promote torture, or invade our privacy with illegal wiretaps.

I'm voluntarily deleting my own post concerning G. Gordon Liddy, and the greedmongers who want to open ANWR. There's already been a vote, a decision was already made.

What is the point of democracy if those who lose continue to belabor the point ad nauseum?

Yes I know I still have a post but over one hundred expletives were deleted (and none were harmed.)

Roe vs Wade is still the law of the land. We need to resolve this issues around the gas line resolved before Big Oil Companies steamroll Alaskans out of the benefits.

We definitely don't need any more regulation on abortion.

After viewing these posts, it seems obvious that schools need to do more to teach tolerance. A great many kids aren't getting those values from their parents. Kudos to Ben and those who support his group and DOS.

No gay person has ever called me a G. D. Atheist (although I'm not). No gay person has ever condemned me to Hell because I disagreed with him. No gay person ever belittled or bullied me when I was in high school.

I can't say the same about the other group that's promoting a witch hunt here. I don't have cable tv but when I turn mine on, I don't find a gay channel promoting a lifestyle and a political agenda. Again, I can't say the same about the "other side" posting here.

Thank you News Miner for standing up to the American Council of Family's Witch Hunt. I seldom agree with your editorials but in this case you're spot on.

My hat is also off to Fairbanks Public schools for acknowledging student rights and their efforts to curb bullying and intolerance.

Also a special thanks goes out to members of the Gay-Straight Alliance clubs for having the courage to stand up for their convictions.

Tolerance, non-violence, equality, and the willingness to work together, are all virtues that allow democracy to function. Obviously, as these forums prove, we need those qualities more than ever.

Interesting, Griff.

I was thinking of Pompeii.

Griff,

I too am sad and frustrated but I must agree with you. It took the events of 9-11 to force a change (for the worst) in the way our country deals with the Middle East; I'm afraid it will take a global disaster of epic proportions before all countries (including our own, of course) make a change in the way we deal with our environment.

When I was majoring in college for a BA in psychology I was introduced to the concept of One Trial Learning (the organism, whatever it is, gets one chance at learning a behavior or it's all over) Dealing successfully with the environment may be our own one trial situation.

As News Miner forums have so ably proven, the existence of Global Warming can be endlessly debated. Rather than take sides, I'd like to submit that IF we act as though it's occurring and take serious measures to curb pollution, we all benefit from a cleaner environment.

You don't have to be a rocket scientist, or even a weatherman to realize that if you burn a lot of stuff (such as wood in a forest fire, and many of us can remember the days of smoke we all suffered in previous summers) or (coal as China is experiencing, and it was on the news the other night that Beijing is curtailing many industries so that athletes in the upcoming Olympics can breathe) it affects the environment and hence, our quality of life.

We like our streets to be free of trash, we like our homes to be free of sewage, we'll all be happier and healthier if we make the changes needed to clean our air.
