Vision Fairbanks has been trying to do this very thing for months and months and months. There have been NUMEROUS public gatherings for the community to voice their opinion and come up with viable solutions. I was only able to attend one of the meetings, but it was fairly well attended (probably by the same group of concerned citizens that attend all civic-minded events). And I learned a lot and was able to ask questions, give my input and be part of the public process. I believe the proposed plan is now in front of the city or borough for review. Get involved instead of just complaining on comment board!

I'm not going to pretend that I know what's going on, because I have no idea. I attended the meeting, but still am kind of in the dark.
But I wanted to bring up the fact that native corporations (Doyon, etc) are the among the richest entities in the state if not the world. They are member-owned in a sense, and they diversify to the hilt, bringing their members thousands of dollars a year...all by owning other companies. What's wrong with GVEA doing the same thing? When the companies make money, the money is put back in the kitty, and we all benefit.
Now I just wish the rising fuel costs would somehow go away.

This place has been in disrepair for years and years, way before the firefighters supposedly trashed it. It's been closed for a long time. I'd imagine what hasn't already fallen apart would easily do so with hundreds of users. I would think the caretaker's responsibility would be to oversee the use by anyone, and he simply didn't do what he was hired to do.

"...how can I prove my innocence? If I smoked pot last week and I was pulled over last night, I was NOT under the influence, but it will still be in my system."
It's illegal! Stop doing it and you won't have to worry.

i_play_outside - oops, thanks for steering us back to the real topic at hand.
I totally agree, and I wish my neighbors were as observant and helpful as you. It may have been helpful several years ago when my house got broken in to. But it's a good reminder to start being more watchful today!

To those of you complaining about the cops... Do you think you're special? If you don't want to get pulled over/ticketed/arrested, then just obey the law! Simple as that. No matter what time of the day or night, if I do something illegal (speeding, no blinker, punching some guy in the head...), pull me over! Why should I be given special treatment just because the cops "should have better things to do"?
If you can read, I'd suggest looking into the driving regulations for the State of Alaska as a start. It's pretty clear in there what's not allowed. And all you have to do is what it says. Then if you're in the right, you have no reason to be nervous.
(From personal experience... a trooper once pulled me over for not stopping at a stop sign. Although it was inconvenient, I politely argued, then drove back with the trooper to show him that I had in fact gone right through a YIELD sign. He apologized and sent me on my way. No harm done)
Thank you to the state troopers and all public safety officers for keeping us as safe as you can!

If truck drivers want pilot cars, then truck drivers should have pilot cars. My brother (and someone's son, husband, father) puts his life on the line everytime he drives to the slope, and we want him around for a while. If that's what it takes, then I support it.

I say Yay Dallas!
May I remind all you people griping about the coaching recruitment process that UAF administration went through the whole process last year, hired a supposed "good" coach, and look what we ended up with. Doc had to go, and I have a feeling Dallas will be very successful. Part of his success will come from working with a group of kids who LIKE AND RESPECT him as a coach. I think he's going a great guy for the job. Also, he's been in Alaska for a while, and probably won't just waltz out of town at the first opportunity to go bigger like most of these guys.
