For a woman who feels that universal pre-kindergarten is not necessary in Alaska because young children should be home with their mothers, Palin is a prime example of "do as I say, not as I do."

Never liked her, never voted for her, don't plan on changing that now.

moose, Obama's father was Kenyan. He was in the States (in Hawaii) attending college and met Obama's mother, a white American. So Barack Obama truly is African-American in that his heritage is half African and half American.

Ulises, UAF is a public institution and therefore all qualified students deserve a safe environment for receiving an education. Gay, straight, male, female, Catholic, Jew, Asian, Inupiaq, and so on. That's all. "Acceptance of gays" just means the ability for homosexual individual to receive the same safe and quality education as their straight counterparts.

Regardless of Obama's policies or how you feel about what he stands for, what the heck is up with the obsession with his middle name??? Honestly, it's like an American having John or Lynn as their middle name. He didn't chose it, his parents did. It's a NAME, nothing else. If one's middle name is George, does that mean they are George Bush reincarnated? How about if your middle name is Richard -- now you're Nixon part II?

Please get over it, people.

I have to agree with the comments here. Swim sign-ups are absolutely ridiculous. Our oldest child is 13 and signing her up for her first swimming lessons was nowhere near the ordeal it is now. I understand that space is limited, but there just has to be a better way to do it. We're fortunate that our oldest two children have managed to get through levels 4 and 5, but our youngest has had just one session of lessons because of the ridiculous hassle.

"For those who think it is a handout or welfare...donate it Love, Inc., the soup kitchen, the Salvation Army family services, the Food Bank"

EXACTLY. Non-profits such as these and other, including the Literacy Council, Fairbanks Counseling and Adoption, Big Brother Big Sisters and so on have seen their utility costs rise as well. I used to work for a non-profit here in town, and believe me the fuel companies don't cut them a break, nor does GVEA. In fact, because non-profits can't always afford to upgrade their equipment, their costs may even be higher. So if you don't need that extra money, consider donating some or all of it to a worthy cause.

I have to agree with realist. Responding to violence with violence is not the answer.

And as a mother of children, the last place I want to have a gun is in my car, where it is not secure. Kids play in cars, kids leave stuff in cars and run back out to get it. And if I'm driving with kids in my car, I don't need to be worrying about shooting someone.

So all of you who advocate carrying in your car, and presumably using that gun, do you also approve of driving while talking on a cell phone? Because I can't imagine it would be any safer to drive while shooting at any target, moving or not.

BigMike, the rationalization is being done on an administrative level. Teaching is done in the classroom, by the teachers. The teachers I know, and they are many, pay very little attention to the rationalization and LOTS of attention to their students and what is going on in the classroom.

woodman, I know of very few teachers that start teaching here at 24 and retire after exactly 20 years. Many teachers work well beyond their 20 years. Many don't start teaching till later in life. Many come to Fairbanks (or Alaska) after several years in another state and start their 20 years mid-career.

Fairbanks is a transient town. With the military, the university, and the surrounding villages, there's lots of movement in and out. This not only affects that teacher turn over rate, but also those graduation rates we keep hearing about as well. It's a challenge in many facets of community life here in the Fairbanks area.

FreeDarfur, aside from the summer break, which is similar to most summer breaks taken by other school districts, I have found that Alaskan schools do far better on taking vacation days than others. I have an aunt who teaches in California. her district takes a whole week at Thanksgiving compared to our two days, they're off for a week in February and a week in April as opposed to our one week in March, they seem to take every holiday that comes along as a day off (Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, etc).

Alaska's more compact school schedule tends to reflect the fact that many families have summer commitments such as fishing, and that many families find that summer is the only time they can get away to visit family in the Lower 48 for any meaningful amount of time.

Not to mention that increasing the overall number of school days would increase the cost of education.
