Actually, BigMike, my children are receiving a wonderful education in the FNSB. We have a 55% dropout rate because there are a lot of people who choose not to parent their children, plain and simple. Those of us who are active, responsible parents know that our kids are surrounded by caring, wonderful teachers and support staff.

On the other hand there seems to be a large population of adults who view school as a daycare center rather than a place of learning. What exactly do you expect a teacher to do with a child who comes to school with no breakfast, no sleep, and no emotional stability? The odds are good that eventually that child is going to drop out, but let's place the blame where it belongs, on the parents. Our school system is doing a fine job educating our children, the rest is up to us.

I'm sorry akusa, I'm not sure what you found hateful in my post? To point out that people of all races act in not nice ways is offensive? To try to say it couldn't possibly be anyone native because of culture is patently ridiculous. That's not racist, it's just logical. I think the perpetrators could be anyone, but to automatically cross anyone off of the list because of culture is just downright silly.

You don't have to be a certain race to be a nasty human being. They exist in all races.

Seriously how can the leader even say "We feel that it really wasn’t any of our people because it is strictly against our culture" and be taken seriously. As though no one has ever done anything wrong because it's against their "culture". Sounds like someone has bought into the myth of the "Noble Savage"

On the other hand, I certainly don't have enough information from the DNM to make a determination on who did what, and neither does anyone else here. Your hate-spewing at each other just proves my point that you don't have to be a certain race to act like a jerk.

mw123 there were many reasons for the dividend system, maybe you should read up on it before you declare what those reasons were.

The wait period for a dividend seems pretty reasonable to me, I don't understand what your problem is, did you expect it to be like the Simpsons movie, where you received your check at the border?

On another note, a 2000 dividend will probably pay my fuel bill costs for the year (I don't want to speculate on what the prices will do), We only used 450 gallons last winter and are replacing some old windows this summer, which should help, and no I don't have a woodstove supplementing, just live in a modest dwelling that isn't more than my family and I need. It seems there are many people with McMansions who are going to have a rough go of it. Guess they should have thought of that when they bought a giant house they couldn't really afford.

Gas and electric will cost a larger chunk of my household income than previously, but I have already budgeted for it. I agree that the prices are breathtakingly outrageous and we should, indidividualy and on a government level be working on a solution.

It just seems to me that people would rather whine and stick their hands out than dig in and find a solution, and one of those interim solutions is reevaluating your budget. It's not like this is the first time in history people have had to tighten up their belts.

sniffles, you chose to adopt 7 kids. However noble, it was your choice! That is the point. I don't care how many kids a family has, but don't CHOOSE to have lots of children (however they came to be) and then stick your hand out because you have it "rough". It was YOUR CHOICE to have it "rough".

If our state legislature chooses to give rebates to every man, woman, and child, then she will receive 8 rebates, because that is what our government has decided, not because she has it worse than anyone else.

My kids are great too, so what? Do I deserve more money because I have nice kids? What does that have to do with energy rebates?

Another letter writer with a terrible case of ES (entitlement syndrome). You chose to be a stay at home mom,and you chose to have six children. I'm not judging your choices, but I am appalled at your assumption that your choices entitle you to more help because you have it "bsd".

The gas for sports activities? Please. Those are a luxury, and if you can't afford the gas, then stop going.

I hope that you really meant to write a letter explaining why you thought it was fair for every person to get a rebate, and not one that reeked of the gimme gimmes

"oh but those Pomeranians are sooo cute" bleh...go buy a rat."

Uh, yeah, I don't think it was a pack of wild pomeranians hanging out at the transfer site.

Yes people should take care of their pets, get them spayed or neutered, etc. Of course. I don't think the irresponsibility of some pet owners gives anyone the right to dictate what kind of dog you own. Some people like small dogs, some people like big dogs, some people like purebreds, some people like mutts, and some people don't like dogs at all...what does that have to do with the problem of group of feral dogs to be removed? The problem is not related to what kinds of dogs people like...it is related to irresponsible caretaking.

The sad truth is, I think the best solution for these animals is euthanization. I don't see how a feral dog could be put up for adoption, and I don't think they can be safely left to roam. It is an unfortunate situation, but there is no point in putting humans in jeopardy for the sake of a feral animal.

" If you wish to praise the military, please do so on other grounds"

Please refrain from telling me how I may or may not comment, whether you agree with it or not. If you find a mention of an economic reality cynical, feel free to debate the topic, but your particular argument is completly lost with your self-righteous assumption that you may dictate how I am to comment.

That being said, It was not my intention to praise the military for their economic value, but only to point out specifically to someone calling for their removal what they bring economically to our community, and how it is naive to believe that our community would be unaffected by a complete military withdrawal.

I realize from his later comments that shdwnk does not really care how it affects the community, which is his right, no matter how asinine I think it is.

Wow, do people really have nothing better to do than whine about this? I just don't get it. Yeah it's startling, but it is also awesome, in the truest sense of the word.

Sdnk, you really live in your own little world, don't you? The military plays a huge role in the economy of Fairbanks. Much of this town would simply fold if the military chose not to grace us with their presence any longer, but given your comments on other topics, I realize that you have very little grasp of economics, so I'm not surprised at such ignorance regarding the military role in our community.

Carry on USAF, most of us are grown up enough to not cry about a big scary boom now and then.

shadownek, I'm so glad nothing bad has ever happened to you. I agree life is about choices, and you would never catch me whining if my friends didn't take care of me when I messeed up.

I agree, that an emergency fund is a great idea, and that people consume more than they need to, have trouble differentiating between needs and wants.

Here comes the big but

First of all, not all of us were raised this way, and by the time many of us reach the point where we stop and say whoooaaaa, i'm doing this all wrong, we are already up to our necks in stuff that is going to take several years to dig out of. So just because someone's in a position where they don't have an extra 500 dollars doesn't mean they are deadbeats. What an elitist point of view. Not everyone is given the advantages and or knowledge that you seem to have, and even worse MOST of us in the USA don't start out our independent adult life this way. Good for you that you learned it early.

Now I don't expect anyone to jump in and "fix it" for anyone else, I'm a believer in personal responsibility, but I am totally amazed by your inability to realize that not everyone is in your position.

I hope you don't ever get some life threatening medical condition that drains every dime you've worked so hard to save, because I know several people who are in pecarious postions because of this stiuation, and they were fiscally responsible adults. $500 dollars extra? Some of these good hard working, not frivolous folks I know are lucky if they can eat a decent meal at home this week.

There is a great difference from the Wal-Mart devotees who spend all their money on junk and then cry about having no money, and people who are just trying to do the right thing, and have obstacles.
