There is a difference between a tort case (a civil wrong, such as the McDonald's debacle) and a criminal case (a crime committed against society as a whole). The purpose of the District Attorney, who represents all citizens in the state, in prosecuting the defendant driver is to protect society by punishing the driver for violating a law and to deter other drivers from acting in the same manner. The purpose of a tort case is to compensate a person for injuries caused by another person's breach of duty. A criminal prosecution (protecting society) has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with a tort case (getting monetary awards). The letter writer is completely off base in this respect.

Isn't it the therory of natural selection that people will take themselves out of the gene pool through his or her own stupidity? Look at some of the recipients of the Darwin Awards.

Do you think I, as a proud multi-gun owner, would be so stupid as to shoot first without assessing the situation? Do you think that gun owners do not totally comprehend the gravity of seriously injuring someone or causing a loss of life? Its not like the home invader is "unplanned" and gun owners kill him or her for convenience sake.

Doesn't the cancer patient PAY for his or her own chemo treatments? Why should I have to pay for rehab for a chronic inebriate's bad choices?

Is being lazy and shiftless also genetic? Is being a chronic welfare recipient a domintant, inherited trait usually found in the XX chromosomes (that's female for the readers educated at public schools)? You bet it is. The more government provides to the "less fortunate" (using the money I WORK for), the more being less fortunate becomes a lifestyle CHOICE. Welfare, which was designed as a temporary, stop-gap measure, has evolved into a professional calling.
It all boils down to personal responsibility. I choose not to drink or seek monetary assistance from the government to support my family. I choose to work two jobs to take care of our needs. Someone else may choose to park his or her rear end on the couch and let the government take care of them. It's my personal choice to retain control of my life. It may be someone else's personal choice to relinquish control of his or her life to alcohol or welfare.

"If you can't walk there, you probably don't need to go."
So if I can't walk 12 miles to my job, I don't need to work at all? Do I go on welfare so I can stay home and not use my car? Or do I give up my home (with no mortage) to buy a house in town so I can walk to work and make a $1500 mortgage payment? Are my kids also expected to walk down the Richardson at -40 so they can get to school in town? If you are offering to support me and my family so I don't have drive anywhere, I'll take cash or money orders. No checks or credit please.

I'm on my fourth comment here. I love Fairbanks because my husband proposed to me on the Richardson Highway. It was so . . . Alaskan . . . to be speeding down the road when he tossed me the ring and asked, "Well, do you want to or not?" We were married here in the dead of winter on a Wednesday night after church. Even though we had only been in Fairbanks for a few months, the ladies of the church hosted a wonderful reception afterward. Where else but in Fairbanks would friends and strangers help one another?

If people are more concerned about being a parent (read as "ADULT") to their child instead of being the kid's BFF or indulging little Johnny's every whim just to spite the ex, then I wouldn't need to worry about what the "other" kids are doing online or on the playground.
By the way Boombam, my kids do not and WILL NOT have a computer, TV, DVD player, telephone, gameboy, video games or cell phone in their room. Whatever they need to do on those devices (IF they earn the privilege and the money to own those devices), they can do in the common areas of our home.

Wasn't this the guy who thought by raising the cost of fuel, we would all consume less? Maybe it was Don Young. When was the last time either of them spent a full winter in Alaska? If I earned more than $175,000 per year (plus governement benefits), I probably wouldn't blink at paying $8.00/gallon for fuel. But, I don't and I cringe every time I think of filling the fuel tank. Either way, both Stevens and Young have been Washington-ized to the point where they have no clue what their constituents need or want.
