It's beginning to look like the Democratic Party may stand a good chance of gaining more seats in the House. With Senator Wilkens leaving, a Democratic candidate voted in would make the Senate a 10/10 split. With all the dislike of our current Federal Congressman and Senator, this may be a Democratic candidates chance to win. It looks like Alaska may be a blue State before we know it. This could mean a times are a changing for Alaska.

Check the Voice of the Times, good article by Tom Brennan on the "Field of Dreams" that adds another perspective to the argument. There is a reason future markets are a gamble, and that good businesses want to have as much information as possible to make a decision about profitability. Unlike our State Government which has managed to finance many failed businesses in the past, building a instate pipeline using billions of Alaskan revenues based on the energy needs of 700,000 people does not make any sense what so ever. Name one business, other than the Port Authority that would ever think this is a good investment. Emotions regarding $4 a gallon gas, seem to have effected people's brains as much as sniffing this gas would. Use some good old common business sense when you look at these issues.

New York City just imposed another $2.75 tax on cigarettes, bringing a pack of cigarettes to $8 a pack. Sin taxes work. Why not on alcohol, the State already does it on smokes. Is it that Alaska has one of the largest consumption of alcohol in the nation, along with ice cream consumption. The voters would probably really revolt at high cost of alcohol. However, the people who consume the most would pay the price. Just like heating fuel the way to reduce consumption is to increase the price.

The big question is how much will this cost and is there enough population to absorb the cost without having to pay high rates. Sin gas plants are extremely expense, a plant needed for Fairbanks could cost well over 4 billion dollars.

Fairbanks and the North Star Borough is a small sub arctic community with two roads in and out to the south and one road to the north. We are at the end of the rail line for the US. We do not have a large consumer base. We do not have a port. The population of Anchorage is 3 to almost 4 times larger then Fairbanks. Matsu has exceeded Fairbanks population. The majority of the States population lives within the Anchorage area. Anchorage has a port, railroad and major international airport. There is the ability to receive and ship goods three ways and the population base to buy large volume of goods. They have wind and water as a means to develop energy alternatives. 25 million has been given to build a wind farm on Fire Island. We need to stop comparing this area with Anchorage, it is like apples and oranges. There is no way this area will ever be able to consume like the Anchorage area. The life style in the two communities will never be the same, but isn't that why we live in this area. Dobson and Whitaker will be long gone before anything happens, this is just a let's look busy as if we are doing something game that high paid government people like to do. Bread and Circus.

I must agree with Arctic Lynx, use of actual names would reduce the comments to a few. Actual feelings can be expressed more fully. I believe these blogs are another reason why I like Fairbanks.

I would like to know exactly what actual experience, education and credentials Mr.Cox has that would suggest that anyone vote for him. From what I hear on the radio, he sounds like a(young) person who over states his background, will not answer personal questions about his education and experience and has an inflater opinion of himself.

Fighter Pilot, you have it wrong again, along with out-in-the-cold andAlaskan59. Yes ,we all will have to hunker-down and wait out the high energy costs and do what ever we can to cut expenses, but so is every other American no matter where they live in this country !! Get over it,we in Fairbanks are not the center of the universe. In fact Fairbanks is a dirty little river town at the end of the transportation line, a mere wort on a pickle compared to the rest of the country.

suomi, right on !! I think that out-in-the-cold & fighter pilot have it
wrong, in a economic downturn certain of the poorest will be forced outof the villages into the Anchorage area which is the cheapest place in the state to live. There is no panic, people are not leaving in mass. Most will cut their overhead were possible & generally tighten their belts. OK, we're all have to do that.

If you are so concerned about the "morality" of Exxon, I am sure you will refuse to accept your PFD check and return it back to the State based on your sense of violated morality.
