The drop out rate may be high, but also take into account how many children and families leave due to military. When I graduated from Lathrop High School I believe my class' dropout percentage was 61% from our freshman year to our senior year. Outrageous! I know.. but its mostly because when a student starts there as a freshman, odds are they arent going to be there when they are a senior because they are forced to move per their parents being in the military. And I'm sure this happens at other schools too..now don't get me wrong there are kids that just completely drop out as well, just not realistically as many as the statistics say.
So dont be so quick to point the finger at the teachers all the time..

tomatoman-
Golden Days will be held July 14-July 20 this year.
Here's the link to the fairbanks chamber of commerce website for more info:

This year's theme is the 49th state, 49th year!!
sfoda415/Jerseyshoregirl-
The only problem with waiting to visit Alaska during end of July/beginning of August is that it almost NEVER fails to rain during the Tanana Valley Fair (in Fairbanks). I've lived here almost 21 years, and EVERY year since I can remember its been rainy during the Tanana Valley Fair.
The Alaska State Fair is held in Palmer, AK towards the end of August.
mikele-
What type of celebrating are you thinking? Midnight Sun Festival? Golden Days? Tanana Valley Fair? Fairbanks has lots of festivals/activites going on all summer long, it just depends on what your looking to do while in AK!
Hope some of this information helps!

Montague- I forgot that companies like SMG book entertainers based on what the community "values" are.
Elton John has sold more than 250 million albums and over one hundred million singles, making him ONE of the most successful artists of all time. He has more than 50 Top 40 hits including seven consecutive #1 U.S. albums, 59 Top 40 singles, 16 Top 10, 4 #2 hits, and nine #1 hits. He's won five Grammy awards and one Academy Award.
Can't you at least give him a little credit? Even if he doesn't share the same values as you do, its obvious to see that other people around the world are astonished with his music. And thats what it should be about..his MUSIC

BillyG-do you really think that he didnt know what he was doing was wrong? I dont mean to be rude, but did you follow the case at all? He forged signatures on checks, created a fake business that he could launder money in and out of, paid for a family wedding reception, credit card bills, and other debt(per gov press release) the list could keep going. I'm not saying that he used all of this money for personal use, but I'm sure he may have used some.
Your saying just because he didn't know how to manage money properly, he shouldn't have been convicted?? He was our mayor!!! I'm pretty sure he SHOULD know what is right and wrong as well as the laws.
"You should only spend time in prison if you intentionally stole, with clear uinderstanding that you are stealing" Do you think he knew what he was doing when he filed his tax returns? Because he was convicted on 2 counts of filing false tax returns..I guess he "misunderstood" those too...

I disagree with the leniency for Jim Hayes. Yes, he did do a lot of great things for the community BUT he DID also STEAL HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of dollars (MORE than $450,000.00)from the government and used them improperly!! I feel as though these people writing letters to Judge Sedwick are saying that its ok to break the law and just get a slap on the wrist- he did the crime, he should have to do the time, just like everyone else. The fact that the money they laundered was suppose to be for children, and they used it for a "cash-strapped South Fairbanks church where Hayes served as pastor" (as well as personal spending on items that included a big-screen plasma television for his home..(per ADN) is what really makes me upset about this issue. The government gave that money to them thinking it was being used for children, not a church.
Since Jim was such a prominent community member (and mayor!) I feel as though we as a community should be embarrassed that someone of this statute is being labeled as a "leader" within our community. Do we want people like this leading our community? I think not..
I am positive that they put thousands of people in jail every year even if they are depressed or if their physical health isn't the greatest-therefore I think that Jim Hayes should be put in jail and punished for what he did.
Since Jim and Chris stole as much money as they did, and went to such great lengths as they did to steal this money they obviously knew what they were doing the entire time. Fake businesses, forging signatures etc., I'm pretty sure they had a good idea of what they were doing. Therefore they should take responsibility for their actions and DO THE TIME!!

NEWSFLASH! EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED ON THE EAST SIDE. You think my parents, who bought their home in '86 envisioned what there is today???? Remember, before those box stores started attracting traffic from EVERYWHERE ELSE that land was FORESTED!!! NOTHING now when i look out my bed room window i can see the Steese Medical Center, Boston's, and the towering (at least for FBANKS standards) AlaskaUSA Financial Center. Just down the street from me is a BRAND NEW neighborhood, the astoundingly UGLY Lazelle Estates. Please Calendar, show me this kind of growth ANYWHERE along the proposed southern bypass route. Eastside Fairbanks has grown more than any part of Fairbanks, and AKRR's plans are Counter-Productive to the growth that will continue regardless of the outcome. Forgive us of being reluctant to give AKRR everything they want only to have them BALK at their end of the deal for lack of funds. Congrats AKRR on securing federal fund for your projects, but who's ensuring that those projects are in the best interest of Fairbanks residents.

HOWEVER, AKRR's plans along T.Gate are COUNTERPRODUCTIVE to the GROWTH and EXPANSION going on all around it. Next time you're in the vicinity take a cruise down T Gate. and make note of the k rails blocking off D and E Streets. AKRR seeks greater safety by reducing the number of places where tracks cross roadways but all this does is create greater congestion on C & F Streets. Calendar wonders "how many casulties have there been in the last 20 years along the current routes within the city limits" and while I am hard pressed to think of any incident, I wonder how many streets can you close before traffic becomes so congested that a major catastrophe does happen????? The southern bypass is the ONLY way to INCREASE safety because otherwise, it's still a million barrels of oil rollin through the neighborhood. Calandar seeks to paint east side residents as a buch of whiners but AKRR's plan seeks to continue on as if nothing's new on the east side.

Lest we forget just who those tourists are. These aren't exactly the young and the healthy. I was at Princess lodge a few weeks ago one of them was being carted away in an ambulance. How many of these wayward travelers return home to their respective airports, loading their luggage into a buick parked in.... A handicapped spot!!! 5 out of 10??? 8 out of 10???
