It's the JET stream - my Mom used to study it to see when we'd get some more snow for the ski area! :)

Remember one September or August we kids were standing outside in the neighborhood and there was a wonderful Aurora display - but I don't know how dark it is or if that was more an October thing ... ah - it's all a blur to me. I used to get up in the middle of the nite and check outside every nite in the winter - used to see alot of displays in the middle of the nite - sometimes faint and sometimes really bright.
My fave time of the year is summer in general and July - August in particular. :) There's usually 2 weeks of rain up there each summer.

What's unfortunate is when billions of dollars (I know it's not ALL about the money) can not be allowed to be extracted from the land BECAUSE of a few salmon. I think that restraints can be put on the mining operation and all oversight taken - and then let them go forward and take the metals out of the earth.
The PROBLEM is when environmental issues over-ride ALL EXPLORATION AND EXTRACTION.
This is the ridiculousness of the legislature AND environmentalists.
Correct that legislatures!!!
Ask for restraints - do NOT completely ABOLISH mining in the great state of ALASKA!
