Any and all of you who think anything about this incident is amusing should be ashamed of yourselves - ditto racist or idiotic political rantings - and ditto gun fetish rantings. Not to mention that some of you gun fetish folks have a few screws loose...The rest of us (which is nearly all of us) recognize that.

My children went to West Valley and they were safe, but they might not have been. This forum may be a good place to bring this to adults' attention: when I drove school bus, recently, we were instructed that if we were aware of any student on our bus having a gun, we were to go to the school (no kidding), unload the students as normal (sure! that's normal!), secure the bus (turn it off and take the key), follow the students into the school building (and yes, 'follow' them), make no mention of anything on the radio (which is supposedly monitored by the district and which I think is also monitored by public safety - it should be - but the company said we could use no code, nothing), and then walk into the office and report the gun to a school administrator. I asked if there could be a code to report this before the gun was taken into the school. I was told in no uncertain terms, "No." What a bunch of irresponsible idiots. Great idea, let the kid walk into the school with the gun.

Just thought this would be a good place to get that little piece of information out into the open.

Certainly serious charges should be, and will be, brought against this student.

Thank you to those who had the common sense and sense of responsibility to report the firearm. You have courage and common sense. Thank you.

Wayuphere-

That was Franklin Roosevelt - another 'somewhat liberal Democrat' - no, the most liberal Democrat, who led our country out of the Great Depression and who also led us out of World War II.

But you knew that. Can't you just hear his voice resonate? You've heard the recording of him giving that portion of that speech many, many times.

And yeah, I agree with your last paragraph. We'd be insane to let this stuff go on.

This comment made sense:

"Hi folks...Sad event for Fairbanks. The only way to get rid of...[this]...is by aggressive police action. You need to search them out and arrest for any charge available. You need to run them for any outstanding warrants. Identify them and hound them!!!...They will be easy to identify...Too many cities in the lower 48 tend not to be aggressive. The cities that are aggressive seem to reduce the problem...Go Fairbanks!"

We want aggressive action. I personally don't care if any of the people who think they're 'playing' at this get hurt or are incarcerated - probably a widely shared sentiment.

Uh, people who play these idiot games of course read about the activities online - and they would have to be dumber than rocks to not realize that the people who have written above are not kidding.

We would be insane to not drive this down. Maybe there are some stoners or religious fanatics who get off on some martyr aspect of this stuff. Most of us aren't that dumb. When children or adults start shooting anywhere near innocents, my empathy steers completely away from the situations of those shooting or contributing in any way to the interactions, no matter the age or situation. How smart does one have to be to understand this principle? These idiots should be assured, also, that an amazing number of Fairbanksans carry guns.

Related: I really object to the glorification of the other murder of a few years ago on local TV in response to this. It seems it's a take off, and is in admiration of, a local character known for manipulation based on the value of ritual. Not all of us came to Fbks with the military or were sent here. I come from a culture that would never manipulate emotions or attention by parading death, murder, suffering. I remember the original setup 10 or 12 yrs ago re grabbing private and public attention by exploiting the murders of people in Fbks. Wake up, folks. It's the exploitation of the lowest by the lowest.

I read that letter and I thought, "How hideous," and then I looked at the author and was first shocked and then not surprised. How many times I've heard similar things, spoken not in jest, come out of her mouth! Not a friend of mine, let me make that very clear. It's easy to slander people; you folks ought to be a little more discerning, considering the source and the caustic comments.

The gov is not "saddled with...another 'he said, she said' account." The News-Miner is saying that. The gov is consistent. What has changed is that she now realizes Kopp would not make a good DPS commissioner.

There are lessons to be learned from this. Important ones: sexual harassment is serious to those who are harassed; we have to listen to the women who are harassed if we are all to enjoy well-founded credibility; harassers will basically do whatever they can get away with. And no, don't bother replying on this blog to say this comment sounds hostile. Predators are predators, and we all have enough information to be able to take responsibility for that fact these days. The only thing that's not simple about sexual harassment problems is that usually the woman is defamed.

We sure as heck don't want our cops practicing this stuff (along with a long list of other professions we don't want practicing this stuff). It's been my experience that everyone involved knows quite clearly what appropriate behaviors are and that there are folks on numerous sides who still think they can get away with exploiting these miserable harassing situations - but as I said, we all have enuf info these days to be able to easily understand what's predatory and what isn't. People that 'get off' on these situations pretty much stand out, these days. Good call to get rid of Kopp. Obviously the gov realized that this was serious. It makes me have more faith in her governing, not less. Sometimes those who try to make something of these harassing situations, instead of solving them, are those who are part of the problem, not the solution. Hope they find a good commissioner soon.

We won't see any more 'truth' from this article (or series). We may see some 'truthiness,' i.e. revisionism, half truths and manipulation. Maybe if it's well done, we'll see the prison circumstances of those convicted.

Racism is real (also unnecessary and destructive). Violence is real (disgusting and idiotic, but real). The use of pot and other drugs and alcohol by youth (and by all ages, all races) is real. Exploitation of the circumstances all these folks found themselves in is also real. Maybe this is a good time to point out that some exploitation of the parties' circumstances is probably what partially led to the events that occurred.

Not only do I hold those who exploit human tragedy in contempt, always, but also those who wink and nod in agreement w. it because they feel they can utilize some facet of it. Wasn't ok to exploit this in the last few years; isn't ok to do so now. It's got nothing to do with race. It's got everything to do with ethics. And no winking and nodding at that word, now. PT Barnum was not known as a major builder of communities.

Echoing the previous comment: the News-Miner is not an appropriate forum for this experiment. The 'firestorm' set off was not generated (and carefully cultivated) until later. I hold in utter contempt those who exploit human tragedies - for any reason. And also those who claim the high ground, and especially those who claim the high ground while pretending to disclaim it, by exploiting human tragedies. The News-Miner is nuts to consider printing anything mentioned in the editorial. Constructive? Surely not. Exploitative? You bet.

My children used to get really excited about these bugs, having been taught to do so by certain other kids. It was more annoying having those kids screaming than having the bug around. Made me wonder about the other kids' homelife.

These bugs are so s-l-o-w.
Just grab the bug by an antenna and fling. They really travel. Your fingers will be nowhere near the 'bug.'

In the car: open a window and fling the bug out. Another good way to impress your friends.

Just take the lights.

If they want to have some association with a town in Alaska: good

'We' always want to trade our association with Alaska to businesses and organizations when there's money to be made off it; why aren't we willing to trade when there's money to be saved - and public money, no less?

Terry, it's ok to change your mind. Public outcry is saying, "Take the lights." Take 'em. A good PR move for you. You can't lose.
