The city cannot take care of what they have now, our streets are full of pot holes...the list of city short comngs goes on and on. UAFD does a great job of takng of Fred's west and that side of town. The city FD has tried for years to take over this area. I am opposed to this annexiation.

I just read through this entire blog. It is amazing the misinformation out there from some writers.
Sean White is correct in everything he says.
I spent many years working for a volunteer fire department here in Fairbanks. Volunteers cost money. The average volunteer fire department roster turns over every three years. Many volunteers cannot respond during work hours because their employers will not allow them to take the time off or they have to use their annual leave to respond. Volunteers must be trained to a minimum level before they can respond. Volunteers must have the same PPE as paid firefighters, this is expensive. This takes TIME and MONEY. The training is never ending for volunteers and paid firefighters alike.
I live in the city and pay my property taxes because I want to know that I will have police, fire, and ems response when I dial 911. I want to know that if I have an emergency I will have fully trained help at my door in a short time.
I find it interesting that the fire department gets beaten up so badly, yet the public works department is ignored. Now thats where you can look for wasted dollars and overpaid management staff, non-working foremen, abuse of employees by management, etc. Maybe the city should look at contracting out street repairs and snow plowing.

The Barn is part of Fairbanks History. Fish and Game has used it for cold storage for years. The barn should be preserved and I like the connex idea for storage of F & G is great, economical and fire proof. I doubt that they would be thief proof, but it would be a good start.
On Lack of funding for storage facilities leaves Creamer's ripe for thieves

Just bulldoze downtown Fairbanks. The only thing there are city offices, borough offices, state court building, attorney offices, school district offices and a few businesses that cater to the tourist trade. The only worthwhile business that has what Alaskan's need is Big Rays. If those offices do not support the businesses, then maybe the business owners need to consider whether or not their services are needed or if thier choice of locaiton is wise.
At one time downtown was a thriving area. That has been destroyed by the people wanting to revitalize downtown. Times have changed, maybe its time to move on.
I will not be supporting anymore bonds for downtown Fairbanks. Look at the mess the construction made out of third avenue! The parking places are impossible to plow in winter and people get tickets for parking on the sidewalk...when they can't see the curb for the snow.
If the business owners in downtown Fairbanks want to see things improve, get rid of the drunks, have decent parking and have services that people want.

Sarah needs to go back to work, and stay put. Who paid her wages while she was running for VP? I do hope, it was not the State of Alaska. She certainly has not been on the payroll long enough to earn that much leave.
