getreal - I can see in retrospect how you would think my comment was directed right at you. But it wasn't. I don't know anyone on this board well enough to criticize their specific situation, so for what it's worth I apologize.

Threads like this make me very sad for the children.

I don't understand why non-custodial parents (or the current spouses of non-custodial parents) feel like they shouldn't have to pay child support if the custodial parent is making ends meet without it. Why should the non-custodial parent be off the hook for financially owning up to the costs of their children just because their ex went on to be successful?

newsreader - I'm praying for a new car to drop on my head too while I sit here on the unemployment line reading my Bible. I'll let you know when it works out so you can quit your day job.

Maybe I can come up with the right thing to say to newsreader to convince him that not all Christians are the big, evil "baddies" he paints us to be.....

Or not. I think there's a MUCH better chance that an apartment really will just drop on my head if I pray hard enough instead of go get a job and save up for a deposit and rent.

I would rather post anonymously in the forums than write a Letter to the Editor with my name on it and have people trash it. I still want to voice an opinion to the community, but I am NOT going to do it through a Letter to the Editor if people can insult my ideas and degrade me personally with a couple of keystrokes and a click of the mouse.

I completely agree with Dermot Cole about how these forums chip away at the Letters to the Editor. I used to write fairly intelligent, well thought out Letters to the Editor every few months. However, now that anonymous people can instantly attack me with no reprecussion, I can honestly say I will NEVER write a Letter to the Editor again.

Yes, the vast majority of people are respectful and decent, even under the cloak of anonymity, but there are just enough that aren't.

Although I miss writing a letter every now and then I do realize I'm only one person. That I no longer send in Letters to the Editor is irrelevant in the long run. But how many other people feel the same way? It's a choice the News-miner will need to make - a diversity of original Letters to the Editor or a large discussion forum? I honestly can't say which one has more value and I'll be interested in seeing how this evolves.

These forums make me too uncomfortable to post with my name (like I would in the past with the Letters to the Editor) which is why I choose to post anonymously. A little backwards, quite hypocritical, but it's the best choice for me right now.

On ‘I love living in Fairbanks’ comments reflect community traits worth keeping

I love that the newspaper in Fairbanks runs ALL the results of all the races run in this town.

I love that when I visit Outside saying "I live in Fairbanks" is always a good conversation starter.

eskimobabee - you're right - that does sound racist...because it is. When Bill Clinton got into trouble with Lewinsky I didn't assume that all men or all whites are the same.

hckywtchr - a ticket in Anchorage is not the same product as a ticket in Fairbanks which is not the same product as a ticket in Las Vegas. Different prices for different products.

From the IRS website:

"Eligibility for the stimulus payment is subject to maximum income limits. The payment, including the basic amount and the amount for qualifying children, will be reduced by 5 percent of the amount of income in excess of $75,000 for individuals and $150,000 for those with a Married Filing Jointly filing status."

akguy is right - it is completely possible to be making too much money to receive a rebate. Ironically, if you didn't make enough to pay taxes in the first place, you may still be eligible though!
