The state should remove all stop signs from all roads and highways in Alaska. Alaska drivers simply can't comprehend them.
The state should also require that all turn signals be removed from all vehicles entering or operating within state boundaries. Alaska drivers don't know what they're for.
Finally, all Alaska drivers attempting to drive sober should be arrested. At least the drunks have a credible reason for the way they're driving.

I agree with you Christina, on both counts, which is why I am extremely wary in regard to "modern meanings" and their adverse effect on certain eternal principles.
"""I believe there are more instances of the abridgement of freedoms of the people by gradual and silent encroachment of those in power than by violent and sudden usurpations.""" -- James Madison
"""A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government.""" -- Edward Abbey
Hope you have a nice week-end.

"""I disagree that evaluating the Constitution with "modern meaning" is the same as "burning" it."""
No, it's not necessarily burning the Constitution, but it is inherently dangerous. Somehow, many politicians in D.C.(and even some judges), by way of their own interpretation of "modern meaning" , believe that going to war (including pre-emptive war)without a congressional declaration or that domestic spying without a warrant is perfectly okay. Others, by their "modern" interpretation, believe that is the place of the Federal Government to micromanage the states, determine what individuals may or may not own, rob citizens of 1/3 or more of their earnings, and provide cradle to grave contracts, jobs, subsidies, or benefits to unproductive, inefficient bureaucracies, businesses, industries, or individuals.
Sorry Christina, but I don't buy your arguments to marginalize "original intent". Despite all their foibles, I'll take the "intent" of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison over the "politically convenient interpretation(modern meaning)" of George W. Bush, Al Gore, Barak Obama, or John McCain any ol' day.

"""The drafting of the 2nd had NOTHING to do with hunting or individual self-defense. Those two concepts were 'givens.' What the 2nd amendment did address was the citizenry being empowered to "put down tyranny, both foreign and domestic."""
Excellent post Dirk, thanks for pointing that out. Clearly, the Founding Fathers were fearful of an out of control government having the sole power of wielding the firearm. Reading what they said in regard to the right of personal firearm possession bears that out exactly:
"""The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."""
- Thomas Jefferson
"""A free people ought to be armed."""
- George Washington
"""Democracy is 2 wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner - Liberty is a well armed sheep contesting the vote""".
-Ben Franklin
Conversely, consider how Adolf Hitler felt about the right of the people to own or "possess arms":
"""The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to allow the subject races to possess arms. History shows that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by doing so"""
The Founding Fathers were always concerned with containing the power of government and the second amendment is really a furtherance of that concern. Really, the second amendment is the last ditch defense of the Constitution itself.

Speaking of "lifetime monetary setbacks", 45 million Americans will get get just that if they end up in our health care system for cancer, heart disease, or severe trauma due to some accident beyond or not beyond their own control. Seems only fair then that if you have to pay for your own health care, you should also have to pay for any rescue services that result from your own recreational risk taking or lack of backcountry know-how or preparation.
On the other hand, if volunteer rescue groups want to provide their services for free or the military wants to chalk up a rescue situation as a training exercise, I can only applaud that. But tourism be damned, the people/government/taxpayers should not be obligated to pay for poorly calculated risks taken on by individuals for recreational purposes.

"""send it back down here to us where it belongs. After all, we need it to fill our tanks with gas, and once you all are drilling in ANWR, you sure as hell won't need my charity anymore""".
By all means, please do keep all that federal revenue, Pinhead. As an added bonus, we'll throw in serial pork-pushers Don and Ted, who have in reality, done nothing but turn Alaska into a sorry federal welfare colony. And most importantly, please also remove all of our federal landlords in the National Park Service, USFWS, USFS, etc. as well as all other UNCONSTITUTIONAL federal land control apparatices.
Finally, leave us alone to drill, mine, fish, cut timber, as necessary to produce honest hard capital. We'd be much better off paying our own way and not being dependent on your debt-ridden federal largess.

The best reason to increase domestic oil production(including that from the 1002 area of ANWR)is for shoring up the U.S. dollar. Currently, crude oil and finished products comprise nearly half of the trade deficit and reducing that deficit, along with eliminating our budgetary shortfalls would do a lot to restore the value of our hard earned money.
The chickens have come home to roost. Decades of debt spending, money supply inflation, and eco-mental NIMBY-ism have brought us to the precipice of what may be a hyperinflationary depression. The only way back to prosperity is through hard work that produces real capital as well as sound investment based upon real savings. For Alaska that means bringing TAPS back up to capacity, as well as getting some kind of a gasline built,...and soon.

It would also help, of course to make draconian cuts to the size/cost of federal government for which our debt must also be financed through the benevolence of foreign fair-weather friends.
