It makes sense to editorialize this annual fundraiser for the United Way. It's a large, meaningful fund raiser that helps a lot of Fairbanks families. The United Way funds 23 member agencies, listed here: http://www.unitedwaytv.com/members.html.
And doesn't the News-Miner provide coverage of other non-profit fundraisers? If you make a polite request, you can usually get news coverage for a community event.

From UWTV website: We’re proud of our effectiveness. Ninety percent of your gift goes to help fund community building activities including the services of our 23 member agencies and the collaborative community services provided by United Way. Ten percent of your donation helps to pay for the fund-raising and administration costs at United Way. Thanks to the work of hundreds of volunteers and the generosity of many sponsors, United Way of the Tanana Valley is able to keep our costs extremely low.
The United Way has a small staff who accomplish a lot of work. They also have a dedicated and professional Board of Directors. Good people...good agency...good cause...all for our community here at home.

I respect this trooper for not hiring some press-mongering lawyer to try to get out of the charges. The fact that he pleaded out says a lot about him.
For those of you who are so quick to throw stones at him, it appears that your lives have never been impacted by a bad decision, unhealthy coping skills or addiction. I am glad that you've not walked through that hell.
Be mindful that some people who are struggling with addiction are truly regretful about the choices they've made and the people they've hurt. Addiction is a tough ride to get off of; compassion is a lot more effective than condemnation in helping people walk away from addiction. Many people overcome addiction and move on in life to be of tremendous service to others, even to those who were quick to proudly pound their own chests while they judged and pointed fingers at others.

June,
I applaud you for your honesty and your willingness to seek treatment for this disorder. I also respect you for making an apology to those who have been impacted by this disease. You are demonstrating healthy behavior for all of us. I appreciate you.

Can't say that I'll vote for Mike Kelly. Mike hasn't heard the people; he speaks for his own belief system and not mine.

While I wouldn't mind a casino to attract tourists, I am worried that our city is already plagued by addiction--why add gambling on top of alcohol and meth?
I don't want to seem like chicken little, but I sure wouldn't want to see more of our people suffer from yet another addiction.
Before I jumped in with both feet to support this, I would want to research the impact gambling has had on communities.

Scott,
When I read both bills, the Senate Bill was indeed the better deal--less cash going out straight-up, but longer and more meaningful relief.
Thank you for representing the people, and thank you for taking time to tell us your thoughts. You're also a good listener and seem genuinely eager to hear from Alaskans.
I was disheartened when I heard another legislator Friday on local radio. This legislator mostly talked about what he thinks. He was arrogant. He demonstrated an unwillingness to hear the concerns of the people who called in. He didn't represent what I think. And people wonder why "the people" don't contact their legislators? Why bother, with arrogance like this in the legislature?
I won't be voting with my pocketbook. I will be voting for candidates who actually take the time to listen, to understand, and to represent me, rather than themselves.

JustMe,
As a nonprofit, the United Way is audited and would get into deep (and very public) trouble if there was any wrongdoing. $90 per every $100 goes to nonprofits helping people in our community.
I understand barely having enough. Another way of helping is to volunteer. The United Way has a Volunteer Action Center, and many nonprofits are grateful for the services volunteers provide.
I have been a passionate UW supporter and anonymous donor for over 25 years. I have never regretted supporting our local agency and the people served. I trust its leadership.
