runriverrun-
Exxon Valdez was a mistake, one that shouldn't have happened, but a mistake nonetheless.
Need I mention that it only took our President to lift his executive ban on offshore drilling for gas prices ( a la oil per barrel prices) to plummet?
Listen, I am in favor of alternative, renewable energy and am in favor of solar wind, solar energy panels, whatever it takes to be more globally conscious.
Let's be real here. The technology for these energies is established, but not perfected. In the meantime, why should America pour our dolloars into foreign oil and investments to supply our energy needs when we have comparable energies that can be developed to market, ...NOW?
It would take the mere mention that we are pursuing off-shore drilling, shale extraction, ANWR development and I would bet you my pension, ... oil prices would drop. We, as the United States of America, have a bigger voice than we utilize.
We can develop in a responsible way. We can bring prices down. We can, concurrently, develop alternative energies that have a lesser impact on the environment.
Whoever assumed the foreign providers give a good damn about the environment when supplying their surplus with us?

No matter our disagreements on other issues, I am very happy to know we all share the same sentiments concerning our friend, Mr. Purcell.
Thank you, sir, for you contributions. May you rest with the angels.

Interesting radio show the other day on 660 AM. Caller called in to Hannity and said he was a scientist who works on offshore drilling platforms (not for the oil companies, but basically there to measure their impact).
He said 40-50 years, all along the beach coast, oil dollops "peppered" the coastline, beach people would always have oil on their feet.
Anyway, fast forward 50 some years and you don't have this occurring at all, ... because of the oil platforms. He claimed these rigs are actually HELPING the environment because oil seepage is naturally occurring in these waters, it happens naturally. whent the rigs drill and cap and harvest (I don't know the lexicon), ... what they are doing is relieving the pressure on these underground "oil domes." The pressure does not build up and punch through, thereby causing oil spooge on the beaches. He did concede that a oil tanker spilling would be a major environmental hazard (Exxon Valdez), but he is confident the production platforms and production in general has been far more positive and "green" than not drilling at all.
I agree with MrGreen but would add further that the technology already exists to be in harmony with nature, the research and techniques are already utilized.
Anyway, I agree with MrGreen

Dana,
I once spoke like you. I am a reformed liberal (please, no jokes), but I am also a reformed Catholic. I have witnessed hypocrisy in various forms, but inevitably for me, the greatest example of hypocrisy is within any organized religion. I hate to say that, but I truly believe this, based on my observation and my own opinions.
That being said, there are certain points in your argument that do not make sense to me, if you do consider yourself a Christian. I will be one to admit that I choose to be a heterosexual, or straight in laymen's terms. This choice I did not make cognizantly, or consciously. It was made, I believe, by an internal, sub-conscious decision, ... sub-conscious choice. I have since been tempted, as any honest person could say they have since the onslaught of hormones and puberty. That being clear, I feel secure in my choice, even to the point to saying things like, "that guy is really good looking," or (jokingly), "Man, if I were a chick, etc. etc." These comments do not make me homosexual because I choose not to act on them, a choice my soul, my body, and my conscience leads me to make. I can appreciate the outward beauty of the same sex without ever having to cross that particular line. This is a choice I make and it is reaffirmed to me daily.
Now, this is how I rationalize the argument, people are free to think of this issue the same, or in another completely different way. I have yet to meet with a homosexual who didn't believe that they weren't "born" this way. This is where I disagree and most likely the most debatable point to this whole topic. My opinion (and yes, I acknowledge others absolutely disagree with me) is that ... somewhere along the way, whether sub-consciously or knowingly willful, a choice is made to enter into this way of living. I believe it is a cognizant choice, and since I believe it is a choice, then I also believe that those who choose this life also choose the consequences of the life. Being ostracized from society, not having equal rights, not being "equal" in the eyes of our government or our moral culture as Americans, ... these go with the territory. Hate to be that cold, but I am a realist to society, as much as a hypocrite.
Then the religious aspect comes into play. Of course, those that believe in Christ believe homosexuality is a sin, the same can be said of Judaism, Muslim and numerous other religions. Who is wrong, who is right? I will not judge, yet I also will not support those that demand equality if that equality is shunned by the majority of the population. I am a "sheeple" if you must label, although I have rebelled against the Catholic doctrine, I undoubtedley am a beliver and someone who has faith.
We'll have to continue this debate tomorrow, ... my son is crying in the next room and his needs trump all.
Thanks for listening...

Of course we can tell anyone we wish of our opinion, and perhaps, rally support along the way. Now, whether they choose to listen to our arguments is another issue. That is the true beauty of living in America, newsreader. We will not back down from this argument, it is what we believe is right.
For the record, I am not a bible thumper as you've insinuated in the past, ... I don't even go to church, nor consider myself anything other than a Christian.
I am absolutely fine with being mocked by people with your opinion. Doesn't cause me to lose a wink of sleep.
God bless you...

squarebanksmom -
Actually, Sports Authority may have many of the same items as the Sportsmen's Wharehouse, ... but it is actually more of a "Sports" superstore, ... like basketball, football, golf, etc., and shoes, shoes, shoes. This store will be a welcomed addition to Fairbanks, but it may not necessarily mean the local businesses will suffer much (beaver sports, sportsking). The local stores seemed to have carved out niches for themselves and will carry local support.

I am feeling a bit militant, myself, tonight. If the SP's of the world cand do it, ... why not me?
newsreader - I found out who you are, ... I don't intent to engage in debate with you any longer. I take the high road. Since I've known you before and all the vile I witnessed you committ over the years, ... you're not worth it.
Julia_McCarthy - I've known you since camp. You probably know who I am, but the point here is we have gone our separate ways for a long time. You are young still, I only hope you realize how wrong you have been in the years to come, but I don't hold my breathe.
lagirl - don't give up this fight. I am tired of battling those who calls us degenerates when degenerate is what they see in the mirror.
I will not post to this letter again, ... SP's and liberals, ... you have not won. I simply DON'T CARE to hear your arguments any longer. My opinion is part of the MAJORITY of this great nation. Don't like it? Tough, I'm sure George Soros has a bunk for you somewhere in Canada.
