A homeowner can only be a general contractor on a remodel every two years without being registered as a contractor, this is called an exemption. Violation of this exemption can result in a $1000.00 fine for the first and $1500.00 for additional violations.
Next, a mechanical contractor is generally a plumbing and heating contractor. They will sometimes hire out the HVAC and refrigeration, this is something allowed under their license.
A homeowner can hire a number of subcontractors as he is allowed to be be a general contractor under the exemption.
Do you save money as a homeowner when you act as a general contractor without the knowledge most of them have aquired? Most times not.

A specialty contractor can only subcontract to a subcontractor in the same specialty. A specialty carpenter cannot subcontract the plumbing or electrical work. In order to subcontract to other trades like roofers or concrete the contractor must be a general contractor.
Do your homework Mr. Foote, otherwise you might put your Foote in your mouth.
