Hey Midnightsundreamer... obviously you have never had a loved one in jail, I hope you never have to experience the lonliness and heartache. Phone calls are in place for the families on the outside not a luxury for the inmate. The family members should not be punished for a loved ones incarceration. Love and compassion for another person does not stop when a family member goes to jail. Also, when someone calls from prison, an operator comes on the line and tells the recieving person that the call is from Joe Smoe from such and such prison. It is pretty hard for an inmate to harrass "victims". They would also be in a lot of trouble for doing it, calls are recoreded and listened to.
The family member is also the one who pays for the call. The further away from the prison, the more expensive it is, as much as $15 a 15 minute call to a east coast state. The state is making money off of the inmates families who have already paid monitarily and emotionally.
Silverwindrue is correct, a majority of inmates are in on probation violation and that may be a violation that is not even a criminal act, like getting caught drinking or speeding.
People in prison are still people with familes that still love them.

How can this person still be a trooper? I checked the state employee web site and he is... So, he is out arresting people for the same thing he is doing? This isn't the first time I have seen this either. I know of a trooper who was caught forging prescriptions for narcotics (and driving under the influence of them) and he was never charged, yet, if the average citizen was caught doing that or assaulting their wives and kids or driving while drunk, etc,etc they would be looked upon as criminals and low lifes. Equal justice for all.... my butt!
If a cop gets caught breaking the law, they should be charged and tried like everybody else, not given special treatment. I guess trooper Wooten has it right, he CAN get away with anything.

suomi...
The windfarm in Kotzebue is hopefully not a model for the US. Maybe once in a while there is 1 windmill turning. It does not decrease the cost of the electricity because KEA can not shut off the generator that uses diesel to operate. The windmills sound like a great idea, in theory, but it is not the energy source for Kotzebue. Too bad it is not working now, maybe someday it will work as it was theorized to.

Gas in the NorthWest Arctic Village of Noatak reached $9.25 a gallon a few weeks ago. Milk, $12/gallon. Having lived in a village most of my life, a lot of villagers who are on assistance do get a free drum of stove oil per month. Many of them have so many drums, they in turn sell it to others. Also, if you pull up to the gas pump in some villages, there is a sign that reads a lower gas price for shareholders and a higher gas price for non-shareholders.
Blue5011: It is not all Dances with Wolves in the villages. There are 4-wheelers, snow go's, boats (with Evenrudes), and cars/trucks. The homes are heated with stove oil or diesel. The villages that have trees can use wood stoves, but there are some villages that do not have trees. Stove oil is the only way to heat. The electricity is produced by generaters that run off of stove oil. For the people not on assistance, it is extremley expensive, like for andora and I agree with her, everyone should visit a remote village and spend some time there, you can't comment on village life unless you have lived it. There are very positive attributes to village life. However, the further away from Anchorage and Fairbanks, the more expensive it is. Airfare to a hub to buy groceries that are a little cheaper is horribly expensive.
It is very sad... One day, I hope, natural gas will be available to all of Alaska.

Michele Peterson hit it right on, it felt surreal to actually see Elton sing Bennie and the Jets right in front of me. That is on the list of my all time favorite songs. I told my husband that I bet he hasn't played in such a small place in many years, but Elton performed like he was at a venue of 20,000 people. He is a true performer! My husband wasn't worried about getting to the Carlson on time because he said no performance ever starts on time, I am glad we got there before 8 o'clock! Great, great concert!!

Thanks inchworm, that is good to know. I haven't heard about that. Now how about the $600 fares? And, Dove, in case you haven't noticed, there are no roads to drive on from say, Noatak to Kotzebue to Fairbanks!

I lived in the bush for over 20 years, not a larger hub. When I traveled to Anchorage it cost anywhere from $600 to $700 just for the ticket, just to there, now add on to that to travel further. I used to see fares from Anchorage to Paris for less than $600. Most of the reason people from the rest of the state travel to Anchorage or Fairbanks is to purchase lots of items, clothes, groceries, toys for the kids, bar-b-ques, etc. They do not have the luxury of just running over to Freddies when something is needed. Most of the stuff can be mailed but people bring lots of things back to the villages via the airline, 1 bag will not do it! For that $600 ticket, we got this: traveling on a palatized plane that is only 20% on time, no gate hookup- we have to walk from the plane to the airport building in freezing, blowing weather and elders have to climb long stairs up to the terminal. I can't tell you the number of times I have seen elders fall on those stairs! Go look at where the passengers from Barrow, Bethel and Kotzebue have to board at the Anchorage airport... the very furthest gates. The bush people pay the highest fares and get the cheapest service. I makes me feel like those of us in bush Alaska do not even count. We should count because, afterall, we paid for that mini mall at Alaska Airlines home port, Seattle.

I wonder which side of the Red Dog haul road was the count conducted?
If you visit the Northwest Arctic Park Service in Kotz, you can see the migration path of many collored caribou. None of them will cross over the haul road between the Red Dog mine site and the port site.
Flying over that area, one can see hundreds of years old migration paths that caribou USED to cross over from the North Slope into the Northwest region. Of course NANA will never admit to it because they get about 20 million a year for Cominco to rape their land.

I know Tracy and Chuck, very wonderful people..I am so sad to hear about this...God Speed...
I wonder why Clarissa went with Patrick on the snowmachine back to Kotz? Why didn't she stay with Tracy and the doctor and try and do whatever she could to help them?
Failure to render assistance?
So stupid and sensless.
