Let's not forget that the system has failed John Hartman and his family also. The person(s) that actually did commit this crime has not been charged, convicted, and sentenced for this crime. I agree with magsak in that we should keep our 'eye on the ball' when it comes to the facts of the case.
As for the racial comments, I am Alaska Native, I can confidently say that I grew up during a time when being native was not cool. That is why I hold my head high, confident of my heritage and I am passing that down to my children. This is the time that Alaska Natives/American Indians can be proud to be who they are. If you are misconstruing that confidence, that pride, then that is your issue.
Also, the fact of the matter is, the FPD blatantly stated that 'Natives stick together'. This, for me, pulled the racial card. I finally got around to reading those police interviews. FPD, those police officers specifically, did a horrible job. They need to be held accountable for their actions/lack of investigating. They blindly investigated, interrogated who they wanted to. Tunnel vision. I hope that this forum opens minds and I applaud Brian for his efforts. Brian, you and your journalism students have done more for those 4 young men than FPD. Keep up your efforts.
Evalyn Thomas, I will pray for you and your family. I will pray that you get the closure you deserve. I pray for the closure that will start the racial healing process the community needs. Until then, we need to keep an open mind.

How did this forum get turned into another debate about chronic inebriates in Fairbanks?

I am still curious as to why the young man had on his friends pants. I believe the reason why this specific case is revisited over and over is because of the way it was mishandled. Shoddy police work, jury tests, and the fact that the largest native organization in the interior still believe in the innocence of these young men, well, now, not so young men.

Normally, when one submits an idea in a boardroom, I would hope that others would listen with an open mind and support their fellow peers positively. Gideon has thought about a topic that is concerning to all Alaskans. His idea was a suggestion. I am happy that he was courageous enough to submit it in the forum here. Instead of 'shooting down' his idea, I suggest you submit your own.
I'll start. My idea is to cut off those military who are stationed elsewhere. This will not fix anything, but it is a step in the right direction. I know that the military personel and dependants that do apply for the PFD and are approved for it follow whatever guidelines they are supposed to in order to obtain this money, but I feel once you leave, you're cut off. The money maybe here if you come back.
I also would like to see more done with PFD fraud. This may require some investigating, so please know this may have some cost initially.
joy_Fairbanks, what makes you think the tribal members of Arctic Village are unemployed?
eclaytonLewis-"So keep your ideas in the village where they belong, let the rest manage the money and the choices on our own accord."- I don't hear ideas pouring out of you. Don't sanction the ones who are throwing ideas out there. Gideon is an Alaskan. He has the right to share his ideas about issues that he is directly involved in. Being from a village sounds like he maybe more "Alaskan" than you, doesn't it?
polarmark-You are right on. Good comment.
James- You do know that the great politicians (and their dependants)of this AWESOME state receive this "welfare"? The way you percieve this money is the wrong type of thinking. I do not qualify for welfare. My family does apply for the PFD's and we use these to fill our tank up, buy wood, and cold weather gear. If my children's PFD were to be taken and put in an account for them to get it when they turned 18, my family would just buy less of the above each October.

MikeDanger-
I couldn't agree with you more! AST is more objective and thorough than FPD. All my encounters with FPD were horrible! It's like they form an opinion from the beginning and try to prove that instead of actual investigating. They are also pointedly clear on their personal opinions, you know when they don't like you. There are those who are the exception and they make FPD look good, they should go apply with AST. But they are too busy doing their jobs to handle everyone's complaints.

I do not think that the way Hillary handled her husbands infidelity had any merit when I was choosing who I wanted to be the next Democratic Nomination. I am curious about how she felt and all the details surrounding that incident, but she is a strong woman. Her choices are her choices. Maybe in your eyes this holds merit. It could be one of your priorities, living in marital bliss or discord, when choosing who should lead the free world.
Just because she chose to stay with Bill after he cheated on her does not mean she stayed in an emotionally abusive relationship. I like how you diagnosed their martial problems. I am not trying to defend this situation, just trying say that there is more to this story that we may never know.
Also, I did not view her campaign in any way 'pin hopes on coattails and last names'. She ran her campaign, she's out. She did get caught in lies, alot of them. That is my personal reason for not wanting her in office. Not because of the way she handled her personal, however, very publicized, tragedy.

Way to go Effie Kokrine Charter School!! I agree with the family atmosphere and will miss Eleanor's guidance but look forward to Linda Evans as the new principal. I loved the speech Senator Kookesh gave, but wanted to make my own version of what he said. Graduates, because you are Alaska Native, you can be successful!! Effie Kokrine Charter School has given you the foudation, take off and make the young ones look up to you positively!

The whole concept of the school is to incorporate Native Culture in the curriculum. This school also participates in Early College Credit courses. These students are working up to FNSBSD standards. Effie Kokrine Charter School is a Charter School to incorporate Native Culture, that is what Effie Kokrine invisioned and that is what is being implimented. I am proud that students are being taught by volunteer elders. Ever heard 'It takes a village to raise a child'?These children are being taught respect for self, elders and others while participating in this native tradition. I'm sure this is a reason why these students parents have enrolled their children. I like the 'devil's advocate' approach that akguy takes here, but wouldn't your comments best be shared at a school board meeting or to the school itself?
On Effie Kokrine students learn traditional skills, including skinning

For everyone of you that believe that these 4 men murdered John Hartman, PROVE IT!
"It does document gaps in the police investigation that raise questions about the victim’s last conscious hours. It points out that the group convicted of the teen’s murder may have been prosecuted with forms of evidence identified later in national studies as contributing to some wrongful prosecutions elsewhere. And it shows how rulings from this state’s courts have undermined Alaska Native confidence in the justice system by keeping juries from weighing all that’s known about the crime."
Sounds like these men were wrongfully convicted because all of the above provides REASONABLE DOUBT. For those of you who are confused what this means..."Proof beyond a reasonable doubt, therefore, is proof of such a convincing character that you would be willing to rely and act upon it without hesitation in the most important of your own affairs." ALSO, "This means that the proposition being presented by the government must be proven to the extent that there is no 'reasonable doubt' in the mind of a reasonable person that the defendant is guilty."
Paramedic 99708, please tell me that you are not a paramedic, PLEASE?? Are you sure you didn't commit this crime against John Hartman? Because if you didn't, I see alot of violence in your future on your part.
I am still keeping an open mind regardless of the convictions. I do not believe the FPD and the District Attorney. My opinion is that these young men are innocent because no one has proven guilt.
