I guess this article is just about illegal cutting. It doesn't sound like there was any theft, except from the state. I was expecting some sort of yard invasion, homeowner wood theft. I guess maybe the thieves around here aren't risking getting shot for something you can buy for $5 and roughly the same amount of sweat.

Is anyone really surprised that we got blocked out by the reps from the big city? Have they ever really cared about the yahoos who live up north in the middle of nowhere?

Seriously people. What we need is to stop looking at our government for answers. Our style of government is representative and we are a minority. Fuel oil is ludicrously expensive. We all knew that this spring. If you actually hoped that the state was going to do something about that before it hit freezing again, you were deluding yourself. There are plenty of heating alternatives available here in the interior, and if you didn’t start preparing this summer, maybe you should move down to the major population centers of the state and “play” Alaska with the rest of them.

"If Joe really wants to do something about the number of abortions, why not petition his government to allow easier access to sex education and affordable contraceptives?"

Definately the best part of this letter. I am mostly pro-life myself, but I agree with her on some of her points. Someone here recently referred to the "harpies" on Airport Way picketing. My question is, don't they realize abortion is not a problem, but a symptom? The problem is unwanted pregnancy. If those folks donated half the time they spend uselessly wearing down the sidewalk to educating young people and promoting contraception and safe sex, they could probably actually make a meaningful difference in the number of abortions performed.

Perhaps because "Backyard Amusements" just kind of sounds wrong.

Seriously though, if the borough and the street fair group have both blacklisted them, maybe it was for good reason. The writer may have just caught a lucky break and not gotten them on a bad day.

"Initially, I called their number back and notified them NEVER TO CALL MY NUMBER AGAIN. Now, I just pick up the phone and immediately hang it up."

If you check in the front of your ACS or GCI phone book (or go to your local company's web site) there should be instructions for blocking a particular number from calling you. I have found it worth the time if you get a particularly persistant tele-marketer.

I agree whole heartedly that customer service in Fairbanks is generally poorer than elsewhere. However, I would like to point out that I don't think we can blame this entirely on the folks who are on the front lines of customer service. Many times I believe the blame falls squarely on management and ownership. There is a certain deck restaurant in town that I used frequent. In an effort to increase profit, the staffing was cut back considerably. I stopped going when it took forty five plus minutes just to get a drink. The servers were not necessarily bad; on the contrary, I found them quite pleasant when I treated them respectfully. But, that was not the norm that they were getting from their severely overcrowded and over large sections. Many times now when I walk into a business (local or not) I pay attention to what time it is, how many other customers there are and what the staffing levels are like. Just as many times as not, I find the person I am getting poor customer service from is someone who has been put in a bad situation to start with.

I am not trying to make excuses for local businesses or poor customer service. All I am saying is that the next time you get ready to rail off at someone who is taking care of you properly, look around and see how much of the blame rests on that person. Make sure you aren’t about to aggravate what is already a bad situation. If you look around and realize that you have two people trying to deal with ten customers simultaneously, ask to talk to management. Tell them what you think of their staffing and how it translates to the image of their business.

I don't really see what the problem is here GW. I do trust park staff that have been "authorized" (thus insinuating some sort of process) to carry firearms. The last thing I want is some clueless tourist from California (or gawd forbid DC!) wandering around with a .44 Mag looking to protect their family from a "dangerous" animal they have never seen before and don't understand the behavior of. We have a concealed carry permit process in this state that is getting used less and less frequently because of the fact that it isn't required. However, even those people with permits I wouldn't necessarily trust to carry inside the park. Why? Because the class is aimed at understanding human behavior and when it is appropriate and legal to use force. It doesn't prepare people to deal with wildlife. Concealed carry is to deal with people, not animals.

Speaking of, where did the nastiness of Saturday night roll in from? I nearly left town for the rest of the summer right then. I was pleasantly surprised Sunday morning when it was gone....

Thanks Dr. C. I was shredding the dome with some friends last night and didn't see anything. However, when we stopped to remove downed trees from the trail, I may have payed better attention to what was going on around me. We'll be back with a chainsaw and a 4-wheeler sometime this week because the hatchet/saw method was taking way too long on the larger trees.
