Hi you all, I keep hearing that the buildings on the right of the arcticcam will be torn down soon. What new buildings are planned? Will the parking lot also be "full of buildings", so we will be looking into some persons apartment??
I really feel the urge to finally come to Fairbanks again (I was there in August 1997) and see the whole thing myself...:-))
For those of you, who still like to look at polar/cold regions - much more polar than Fairbanks - I can recommend this site: www.polarwebcam.com in Norilsk/Russia. You can see a nice snowstorm today, May 13th!!...uuurrrggg..never ending winter...

tntmedic: welcome to alaska! what time you gonna be in front of the cam? remember that I am 10 hours ahead of you, so something like noon or 1pm or so would be good for me...:-)
greetings to all from berlin,
frank

I guess I just have to come there myself and wave. unfortunately, by the time I get there the whole view that I am used to will be torn down..:-((

For those of you, who always wondered about the line "we have a dry cold up here (in alaska)" some facts from physics, how this actually works.
first: it is questionable, if one can really say "dry cold", when there is no such thing as "wet cold" - since the "wet cold" at any given temperature does not exist. if the opposite does not exist, the statement would be wrong.
why is that so?
the humidity is always given in "relative to what a cubic meter of air can take of humid vapor without condensation".
The colder the air gets, the tighter the molecule size of the air, so there is less and less space left for the (big) water molecules.
lets see in real numbers:
1) at 40 Celsius = 104 Fahrenheit one cubic meter of air (about 35,3 cubic feet) the air can hold 0.11 pounds (50 grams) of humid vapor (water).
2) at - 40 Celsius = -40 Fahrenheit one cubic meter of air can hold 0.00044092 pounds (0.2 grams) of humid vapor (water) without condensation.
As you can see, at 104 Fahrenheit, the air can hold about 250 times more water molecules than at minus 40.
However, it does not make a big difference in cold climates, if you have 75% humidity or just 25% - the difference is very little in absolute numbers, which we cannot feel.
The point about "cold" or "not so cold" is - the wind. That makes a difference!
So it is more precice to talk about a "no wind cold" or a "windy cold". If there is cold AND wind, you have to have a warm AND windproof jacket to withstand it. The humidity does not really have much weight at very cold temperatures.

12:18 pm: there is a car (yellowish jeep) parked on the HI and a guy is obviously looking (and waving) at the webcam! Now at 12:21 he is still there. It looks like he is talking on the phone (maybe calling someone saying "hello, I am now in front of the cam"). Who is he? Anyone knows?
He is still there at 12:26 with his right hand on his right ear!!...:-)

TNTMEDIC: yes, I am still checking in here on a frequent basis and reading the comments. Tomorrow I will leave for a 12 day bike tour through the Piemont in Italy - from Turin to Lake Laggio Maggiore, so I prolly wont be here for the time being on vacation.
However, I ll be back for the day of solictice and checking the sun going down (or not) in Fairbanks..:-)
Have a nice sunday all around the world!
Frank from Berlin, sitting on my terrace at 74F, almost dusk..:-))))
