This is not welfare. This is one way to fulfill the constitutional obligation of maximum use of our resources. We can't use crude oil in our cars or furnace, but we can use debit cards from the sale of the crude to buy fuel. Thank you governor for listening to us Alaskans.
This is not a done deal yet people. Call the legislature at 452-4448 or sent an online message at http://www.legis.state.ak.us/poms/ and let your voice be heard.

Do you understand that it costs us over $50,000 a year to "remove someone." This is well over the per capita income of Alaska.

No, I have never had a DUI.
I have seen the system in action and there are many problems with it. I have seen people get busted for 0.081 and jump through all the hoops, ride their bicycle to work for three months and pay all the fines. I have also seen people get busted for 0.25, give the city their $200 car, spend 3 days in the half way house and be driving without insurance and a license the next week. Stricter laws would be a greater deterent to those with a lot to loose. The more dangerous people with nothing to loose would be unphased by stricter laws.

How is someone supposed to pay off fines when the no longer have a job and can not get to work? The repeat offenders are often in a position where they have nothing to lose and drive without a license or insurance. Does this make our streets safer?
It has been scientifically proven that talking on a cell phone or driving while exhausted is more dangerous than driving with a BAC of .08. This is becoming a witch hunt just like the anti-tobacco campaign. Even the American Cancer Society states that radon is a much, much greater risk than second-hand smoke but you have never heard a PSA warning about radon.
I'm not saying that it is OK to drink and drive. I'm saying that the laws in place are effective and sufficient. If our goal is to save lives than we could do more good by using our resources in other areas. I would bet that more people are trampled by moose and attacked by bears than are killed by drunk drivers.

I would like to know how dropped out is the last four years and did not graduate? If 70% dropped out per the state average then these numbers make sense and the real honor roll is 15% of the class that started four years ago. Congratulations to those that did the work and graduated.

At least the campus cops didn't shoot at anyone this time.

Several people made comments that this will not affect them. Just wait until we need a permit for our gas line on the North Slope.

As of yesterday the cost of #2 heating oil is at $4.20 a gallon and I got word that the refinery has raised the price 8 cents since then. You can see prices for yourself at www.fairbanksgas.com.
Now is the time to call your legislature and voice your frustration. The Fairbanks legislative information number is 452-4448 or you can send a message online at http://www.legis.state.ak.us/poms/

The small gasline in not viable. The economics of the small line are just not there. We need the economy of scale of the big line to Valdez to deliver cheap gas for Alaska.
