It seems like the re-designers of the downtown area want to eliminate free parking spots. Already the post office's parking is insufficient partly due to its' lot re-design and the new wider sidewalks have eliminated many spaces without actually adding usable width for pedestrians with their decorative shaping. Meanwhile, there is no safe place for bicycles to ride on these streets. And if Barnette and Gaffney are changed to 2-way streets, can you imagine the confusion and accidents that will cause among those of us who live here?

I'd rather see the money spent on infrastructure. The small diameter gasline with outtakes at Coldfoot, Yukon River, Fairbanks, and extensions to Delta, Nenana, and points south would help us much longer than a year. We know the oil companies will never let the price of oil drop. Wind power units or geothermal in locations where they are practical would also help us long term. The money given to PFD receivers will end up in China or the lower 48 and not help us significantly. Tears are already falling over next year's costs.

When a woman brings a baby to term she can't help but feel responsible for it. What if she doesn't trust the supposed "options" she has? There are many reports of children being abused in foster care or adoptions (I realize that this isn't normally the case but it does happen). There are many potential adoptive parents who might raise our children with biases that we do not condone. The death of this baby does not raise a simple question and, I suspect, did not result from heartlessness.

Taylor,
Many of these bullies have fears that they are trying to push back, fear of social ridicule, fear of themselves. Thats why frequently people who have been bullied become bullies. I'm glad that you and the other students made an effort to break the cycle.

If there had been a native woman standing in front of them, or any woman, at the time they made the comment, would they have made it? Of course not, because it's an insult.

I think that those kids are to be congratulated for creating a friendly, non-violent way to join together as a community (not a gang, JB) to make a better life for all concerned, both bulliers and bullied.
People who are bullied usually do not have the resources to defend themselves, this being why the bullies feel free to harass them. People who need to put others down have often been bullied themselves. Designing a situation where this is unacceptable is a step forward. Thank you to the school district for allowing it.

Daisy518_97, The problem is not simply that he was using his municipal email account, it's that he was using it to do fundraising for Stevens at a time when he was supposed to be doing the work for the city that taxpayers are paying him to do.

Cars put out polution that I unwillingly breath. Agriculture, mining, and industry contribute wastes that I unwillingly place in my body. There are positive things that can be said of those activities but we have little choice in our exposure to the detrimental effects. In fact if you try to decrease or limit the bad aspects a person can be demonized as a communist, tree hugger, anti-development, maybe even a democrat. Why are we willing to give business more freedoms than individuals? Even when you are in your own home not sending your waste to your neighbors.

The concept of agreeing with the government just because it's the government is the position of subjects, not citizens. How many agreed with Clinton's sending troops to Yugoslavia? Unlike the situtation in Iraq at the time of our attack (Saddam had already put down his opponents), there was actually genocide happening in the breakup of Yugoslavia. Most Republicans were opposed to our intervention and restricted the options of the president. Bush ran opposed to that kind of 'world police' action. We have done nothing with Dalfur in the Sudan. Now the idea of linking Osama with Iraq is simular to linking Jerry Falwell with the Pope. That idea was considered so unbelievable that orignally it was only put forward by talk radio. One fact we often forget: Before the 2000 election, the position of Cheney and the group, the New American Century, was to do something about Iraq. That was before 9-11 and tales of weapons of mass destruction. This has never been explained. Flying flags is not as patriotic as questioning authority.

A large part of the problem is that abusers don't believe that what they are doing IS a crime. And unless society proves it to them with harsh punishment, and , hopefully, reeducates them, they will continue to do it.
What Kelly said what just stupid and I wouldn't have wanted to sit next to him either because he was clearly breathing some intoxicating substance. When Rep. Nelson moved away she was showing him that his words were unacceptable in a non-violent way. Should she have got a gun and shot him? It seems like that would have been Kelly's method.
