This is crazy. The bear was previously seen near Fort Chukon so it was known to be a polar bear before the hunt began. It was attacted to the Village trash and moved on. F&G should have been notified of a polar bear siting before it was shot. I live in rural Alaska (20+years) and have bears and wolves near home often but have never had to kill one. My wife was trampled by a cow moose in our yard and we did not kill it. People are the invaders; we must respect the land and animals and only fight back for immediate protection. The issue is not racism but rather respect for our world and each other. I read of very little respect in the comments written. I would bet that Cadzow could not see the bear in the snow and it was startled by his direct approach. A terrific omen to have a 102 year elder die on spring equinox, then a white bear appears only to be hunted and killed...bad juju.

Be prepared for when the State is sued for collecting fees from mining claims that are revoked for clean water and the money for the lawsuit payoff comes from the PFD. That will really help destroy the Alaskan mining industry economy. Oil companies are also affected by the Clean Water Initiative; doubtfull those big interests will let this happen.

Beer has gotten stronger as well. Maybe we should criminalize Ice Beer also. Much ado about nothing. "Pot got more votes than Hickel." Human behavior cannot be regulated.

Fairbanksgas is correct. We have a problem. What is it called when the majority of people work for the government? Some call it socialism, some call it communism. Alaska is a place for hard working independent people.

Contradictions abound in the attempts to save the "Native way of life". The Villages are the ultimate place for things to do: hunting, fishing, trapping, beading, outdoor adventure and more. This is the Native culture. All people are subject to substance abuse and it takes personal integrity to make the right decisions. "Programs" cannot regulate human behavior. Change is inevitable as Native populations shift to the urban areas. The Native culture will not dissapear as there are many natives who support and postively promote personal responsibility and integrity. The Natives must take it upon themselves to self improve their personal betterment and not always ask for "programs", assistance or handouts. Many of us have had a hard life, but through hard work, responsibility and integrity we have improved our life for the betterment of ourselves and all people.

How many "studies" will it take to determine that DIEsel fuel is a terrible contributor of nasty carcinogenic particulates in the Fairbanks air. My highly evolved olfactory receptors already make this self evident. Some days one can actually taste the DIEsel exhaust in the air. Somehow this major contributor is always ignored yet those sticky half-burned hydrocarbons are lodging themselves deep in our lungs and do not cough out. Better light-up soon because the cigarette smoke may actully protect you from the much more harmful DIEsel particulates. Oh yes and do not turn off that DIEsel pigrig, best to keep it running September through May. After all no one will enforce the $50 fine for excessive vehicle idling. Go ahead and drive around in a 7,000lb turbo DIEsel but you better be smoking.
