Innocent people are convicted by juries and judges more often than we might like to think. It's one of the reasons several people have gotten off of death row, after being convicted and going through appeals. There are lots of books written on the subject. Court rules, internal and external politics, personalities, social class, individual perceptions, etc., all have a bearing on the case. There is room for doubt and I appreciate the News Miner running this story and bringing out the points it does.

James,
I don't think you have perfect credit if you have no debt. What I've been told is you have no credit...not good credit, not bad credit. It is almost impossible to get a loan with no credit, unless you have collateral.

I love Fairbanks for the stories people have lived both in their journey here and after arrival. I love the hospitality of those that have been around awhile and a shared history. I love seeing the old buildings being rejuvenated and starting a new life. I love Fairbanks for its diversity and live and let live attitude.

Published in the Anchorage Daily News, three extra paragraphs on the above story:
Dussault doesn't pay a dime to live at API -- the state can't charge someone committed involuntarily for treatment, Fayette said. But he's blown money on cars and women and a house, which is now in foreclosure, the judge and others have said.

Dussault is the only Alaskan found not guilty because of insanity for murder since the notorious case of Charles Meach prompted the state Legislature to make the defense much harder to use. Using an insanity defense, Meach was found not guilty of a 1973 murder. Then, in 1982 while on a day pass out of API, Meach shot and killed four teenagers in Russian Jack Park.

Meach was found guilty of the four park murders and died in prison.

As to Dussault, the judge wants everyone to report back to him on June 19.

This story did bring to mind the Charles Meach case.

An intelligent well written letter. If we had more compassionate, courageous young people like this, maybe we wouldn't need to set aside a day to "neutralize the hate that revolves around conflict and intolerance."

It seems to me that the message is clear here. Females are half the population. That means we have half the vote. The stupid thing would be to re-elect Kelley and his ilk. The brothers, uncles, and fathers can help us by electing people who realize domestic violence is assault, in one way or another, and it is a crime. Perhaps Mr. Kelley would be less bothered if the victims, male or female, and their families took matters into their own hands and “took care of this problem” in the only way available to them, if the criminal justice system does not deal with it.

On Kelly apologizes for inflammatory remarks on domestic violence
