Hundreds rally for Obama in Fairbanks

Published Monday, October 6, 2008

A rally for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama drew hundreds of residents to Veterans Memorial Park in downtown Fairbanks.

Molly Haigh, who helps run the candidate’s campaign in Alaska, said 378 people signed in at the afternoon rally. But the group Alaska Women for Obama estimated the number of people in attendance was closer to 500, Haigh said.

The rally drew a number of speakers including Fairbanks City Councilwoman Tonya Brown and leaders of the Students for Obama club at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, Haigh said.

All the available evidence suggests that roadtrip is a Muslim terrorist.

(If he can imply that about Barack Obama based on ridiculous stretches of guilt-by-association, then we can suggest the same about him.)

It's great to see that so many Alaskans aren't afraid to proudly support the best person who's run for President in decades. Apparently the concurrent Obama rally in Anchorage drew about ten times more people than a Palin rally down the street for which Todd Palin actually phoned in live. Alaska may have enough uninformed voters to hand our 3 electoral votes to McCain, but the enthusiasm is clearly on Obama's side despite the Palin pick, and the donations back that up. Obama has raised more money from Alaskans small donors than Mccain/Palin. Ultimately those will matter more than our three electoral votes.

Serialtexter, 300+ is more people than John McCain can usually draw to a rally when he's there IN PERSON. Considering that this Obama rally didn't include the candidate, that's a pretty good crowd.

Pretty good rally from where I was standing. And for the short time I was there on business.
What had me laughing...(other than last night's Saturday Night Live "Vice-Presidential Debate" skit)....was the large...and very real PIG (no joke)brought to the Obama rally in Fairbanks.... wearing lipstick!

It is no suprise to any Obama supporter that we will lose AK... but Obama/Biden will win Deleware, both states with 3 electorial votes... so we are esentially zeroed out in the process... It is the big ticket states like Flordia, Ohio, California, Illinois, New York that are going to carry Obama/ Biden to victory... and we'll have Sarah back to follow through on her promises... bless her heart!

I don't think I can handle any more of our "Pitbull With Lipstick" Bushisms, Folksisms, winks, or deliberate lack of knowledge. McCain and Palin is trying to sidetrack the debate off the economy and trying to link Obama to terrorists. So apparently the McCain Campaign is imploding.
As far as being Libruls and Conservatives... Who was it that foisted the, up to 53-54 trillion American Taxpayer dollar deficit on us, that we'll have to pay off while the Neo Con Parasites skulk to their offshore accounts to count their stolen loot?? Like Shotgun Cheneys Halliburton..
Who was it that sidetracked us into invading and occupying a country with no ties to 9/11?? With Lies, Deceit and Manipulated Intelligence? Where's Bin Laden and al-Qaeda?

CEO, Finally, someone has hit the nail on the head! Obama may indeed lose in Alaska. Newsflash: he's running for President of the United States, not President of Alaska! Governor Palin apparently didn't realize that during her session of winking and "gosh darns" and "betchas" the other night. For that matter, there are plenty of Alaskans who find that sort of drivel insulting to their intelligence as well. Point is, the U.S. is a BIG country with a multiplicity of views, ideas, religions, races, etc. In truth, we really don't have a lot in common, short of the fact that we all chose, or our parents/granparents, or whomever chose to move here from somewhere else (apologies to Native readers). So the qustion for November 4 is which candidate can attempt to do the impossible -- represent us all? Black AND white, Christian, Jew, Muslim AND Nonbeliever, Pro-Choice AND Pro-Life, Pro-Guns and Pro-Gun control? And on and on. He's not YOUR President, he's not mine, he's all of ours. One country, right? Which right now is in a whole lot of trouble, and will above all need Unity come November 5. If Sen. McCain wins, I will support him 100% for the next 4 years. I just hope that all of you who espouse so much hate on a daily basis on this site can say the same for President Obama.

It is a well known fact, if someone has to make up lies or simply try brain washing others to believe them then they are probably not that intellegent.

Now Palin is trying to bring up the incident with Obama's former Pastor, so what. Palin may want to spend more of her time taking care of her home and trying not to cheat on her husband, and less time looking at peoples past.

In 1995 Bill Ayers hired Lord Obama to work on the board of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, that would be the community service that earned him the title of Lord. The CAC funneled education grant money into political functions. In the five years that Ayers and Obama worked together no real progress was made in low income education in Chicago. Obama and Ayers developed Obama's initial senate campaign strategy, at Bill Ayers house of all places. You would know this already if the media was doing more then just cheerleading for Obama.

Obama rally? This is the guy who introduced a Bill to force banks
to give money to subprime borrowers or face Federal charges. So,
they had no choice but to give out loans, to people who
    had poor credit ratings.

    And this expanded the housing bubble;
until it burst. Obama is the ONLY one who caused our present
day stock market and housing bubble to burst.

He plotted with his fellow associates at Fanny Mae, so America would
be in financial trouble and the Republicans get blamed for
it. He was willing to RUIN America, just to get elected and
now people are holding a rally for him? And they want to
elect this man, so he can RUIN America even more?

This guy is a black sheep in wolf's clothing. You Obama people
are crazy and if you vote for him, you will follow his path
to ruination. Check out the facts, do research, but
don't elect this impostor, this snake charmer to the
    Oval Office.

    He may not even have a birth certificate;
which means he is a citizen of Kenya and not even
a naturalized citizen, that is required to be President.
We won't even talk about his rich Pakistani drug
connected friends or his visit there to be among
his fellow muslim friends. Obama would be
a disaster for this Country my friends, a
    DISASTER!

We are in a RECESSION, not because of anything
the Republican did, but because of Obama's
political motives of using our financial
institutions for political gain, at any
    cost to Americans.

The McCain health tax increase will cost every average Alaska family who earns over the Alaska median with current health insurance about $2000.00 or more per year. $2000.00 to the IRS.
For those of you who are Retired with health benefits your employer's or union's contribution to your health plan will be taxed as ordinary income too.
Thanks to Sarah Palin for exposing this during her debate!
Okay, she called it a medical contribution or something. The McCain idea is to tax us to support what is needed and then drop taxes on those making a lot of money so they can buy up cheap stocks to expand our economy. It doesn't matter what color you are.
Is does matter if earn under $250,000.00 per year. So figure how much more you are going to pay for your medical contribution to McCain.
(Your family taxable gross $) & (Your employer or Union's cost to pay your health care provider) = Your new taxable income times the new income tax bracket the additional amount will put you in.
I figure roughly if you and your wife have joint taxable incomes of $70,000, and the employer pays for your health care insurance $12,000.00, your new taxable income will be $82,000.00.
If you are in the 30% bracket you will pay about $3600.00 right out of pocket as your "medical contribution".
Just to be "fair" the rich will pay too, but their McCain tax break will allow them to invest and help the economy.

What about McCaniac's association and friendship with financial terrorist, Phil Graham, who's more than partly responsible for the financial mess we're in? They slipped the bill in right before Christmas and Clinton didn't veto it.

    From Wikipedia:
"Gramm was one of five co-sponsors of the Commodity Futures Modernization Act of 2000[4]. One provision of the bill was referred to as the "Enron loophole" because the House Agriculture Committee drafted it and it was later applied to Enron. Some critics blame the provision for permitting the Enron scandal to occur.[5]. Gramm's wife, Wendy Lee Gramm, was on the board of directors of Enron when it famously collapsed, giving the legislation its moniker, and she was named in many of the subsequently settled lawsuits."
    AND
"Many believe that legislation written primarily by Gramm in 1999 (signed into law by Clinton), is in large part to blame for leading to the 2008 mortgage crisis.[6]. The Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act is perhaps most famous for repealing the Glass-Steagall Act which regulated the financial services industry. The legislation allowed Swiss Bank UBS to purchase several American institutions. Gramm later became a lobbyist for UBS, collecting over 750,000 USD in fees. UBS alone issues over 18 Billion USD in subprime mortgages."

Both parties are responsible for leading this nation to financial ruin, but the Republican Party stands up for big money more than the Democrats. At least Democrats claim to care about health care, education, and keeping corporate greed under control. I am ashamed that all of the people we have to choose from voted for the billionaire bail-out. Too bad, so sad!

One of my favorite signs from the rally was, "We can see Obama from Alaska!"

Palin and McCain together, are as dumb as a box of rocks on the issues that really affect Americans. I do not want a person in power who believes that the invasion of a nation who wasn't a threat to us was "God's will." (Would God really lead our capitalist nation to murder thousands of babies and children because our oil is under their soil?)
I also do not want a person leading this nation who believes women should be forced to bear their rapist's children rather than use a morning-after pill to rid their violently invaded wombs of a few cells. I do not want a person in power who makes up songs about genocide. ("Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran...") I do not want a person in power who's only tool is a hammer, as they tend to see all issues as nails.

Obama and Biden aren't perfect by a long shot, but at least they can hold on an intelligent conversation with the average nine-year-old. That Obama is a Constitutional attorney gives me a modicum of hope that we may get some of our civil rights back.

I was at the rally on Saturday. It was a beautiful gathering of inspired voters, sharing positive energy, and pledging to help choose intelligent, prudent, honest, and compassionate leaders. Of the many signs and posters displayed, only a handful referenced McCain or Palin. The rest were pro-Obama and Biden. Not one of the speakers bad-mouthed McCain or Palin. In fact, the entire rally, start to finish was done in a very positive tone. This is such a contrast to the campaign stops of McCain/Palin and the rallies held both here and in Anchorage on their behalf. Aren't McCain/Palin supporters getting tired of the animosity of their campaign?

Speakers at the rally included: a veteran, a Republican mother of four (one of her children has downs syndrome), a union representative, students, a wife of a deployed soldier from Ft. Wainwright, a representative of Alaskan Women for Obama. It was so inspiring to see so many people, of all ages, backgrounds, ethnicities, and economic levels, coming together to support a better future for our families and communities.I was PROUD to be there!

I, for one, am very tired of the many negative and hate-filled comments written by readers in the comments sections of this newspaper. People in the U.S. should have the right to have different opinions without attacking the person who has those opinions. That should be what our nation is all about.

The McCain/Palin campaign is being run in a VERY negative way, full of name-calling and lies. This, combined with the horrid comments I see from their supporters in this paper, and the Anchorage paper, even further solidifies my belief that I and many others are backing a candidate that will know how to lead in these difficult times. They will know how to unify, work together, and care for our nation with the interests of common people at heart.

I am irate that the Daily News Miner chose not to cover this large event. Rallies were held in Anchorage (over 1000 attendees), Juneau (close to 600), and Kenai at the same time. I'll give you two major ones, there are many others:

    1. The Lugar-Obama Non-Proliferation Act
    2. The Coburn-Obama Transparency Act (which was co-sponsored by McCain!)

"I, for one, am very tired of the many negative and hate-filled comments written by readers in the comments sections of this newspaper. People in the U.S. should have the right to have different opinions without attacking the person who has those opinions. That should be what our nation is all about."--says firweed2.
If I am not mistaken our nation is all about freedom of speech, which includes voicing your opinions whether they are for or against something. If you don't like reading the hate-filled comments---don't go to the Newsminer website.

    lagirl,

You are 100% right everyone is entitled to their own opinions and I respect that fully, but for 1bigcowboy to disrespect McCain and Kerry for that matter was pathetic. They both served our country and shouldn't be classified as cowards. Regardless of what Kerry did after his service is another story, but his service at the time should not be questioned neither should McCain's and I will be the first to throw the B@#$% flag. Hence my comment.

justasking~ That is one of the most ridiculous statements I have ever heard in my life. Being captured does NOT make him a warrior. But being stabbed, burned, urinated on, having fingers broken, being nearly paralyzed, and confined to a cell the size of a twin size mattress.... all while staying true to his country and keeping fools like you safe from U.S. Security Secrets being unleashed to non-allied countries... makes him a warrior.

Because someone is captured on enemy territory or killed across enemy lines, doesn't makes them less worthy or weaker than those who aren't. Those who are killed / captured are more of a U.S. Citizen than you could ever hope to be.

I remember the republicans wearing band-aids over purple hearts at their convention four years ago. George Bush proved that first John McCain was a coward when he beat him in the So. Carolina primary and than he proved that Kerry was a coward in the general election. We must not allow a decorated veteran in the white house. The honor that George Bush has restored to the White house will be lost. The lesson that America learned from the Bush 04 campaign is that decorated war heroes are dangerous and cowardly. Let us never forget that lesson, doing so would be disastrous. God Bless the USA.

fireweed, thank you for the pictures from the rally. I was unable to attend and was very disappointed to not see ANY coverage in the paper. (Was the above 3 paragraph blurb even in the printed version?) This was especially disheartening given the ADN gave full coverage to both the Palin and the Obama rallies in Anchorage this weekend. No matter your political persuasion, I'm sure anyone can agree that a gathering of 350+ individuals in Fairbanks is a newsworthy event.

goldstreamer, I am a goldstreamer too (unless your reference is to a trailer and not the valley) and just because I am exercising my rights and choosing to vote for the candidate I feel who will lead this country in the right direction - Sen. Obama - does not mean I am an 'obamaite' or that I believe he is god or god-like, for that matter. Get off your high horse.

Obama is bought and payed for by Muslim extremists. They have payed for his entire career. This will be the biggest scam in human history and the largest lie. He must have been a student of Hitlers rise to power. Cling to your guns, religion and anything else you can because his plan is to take it away and give it in payment to those who helped in the overthrow of America.

As for fear, I fear little. I played pro sports and know my self unlike someone who has never. (When you can free climb on a rock with a 1500ft drop and be comfortable with yourself you can run your mouth. No room here for those with lions mouths and humming bird rear ends!) My freinds gave me the nickname Tombo. Figure it out or do I need to send a community organiser over to do more of your thinking for you? Hitler counted on people like you, and so does Obama. When I said cling to your guns, religion, and everything else I meant be prepared to fight for the American way of life. Being prepared brings victory something the far left knows nothing about. Americans' way of life is at stake only those with their heads in the sand out of fear don't see that.

Obama awarded Illinois grants to relative's group By CHRISTOPHER WILLS, Associated Press Writer
    47 minutes ago

As a state senator, Democrat Barack Obama awarded $75,000 in government grants to a Chicago social service organization led by a rabbi who is also his wife's cousin, records show.

In 1999, Obama arranged for $50,000 for adult literacy and counseling services offered on Chicago's South Side by a group called Blue Gargoyle. A $25,000 grant for the group's youth services followed the next year.

The group's executive director when the grants were awarded was Capers Funnye, a South Side rabbi and Michelle Obama's first cousin once removed.

Funnye (pronounced fun-NAY) said Monday there was nothing improper about the way Blue Gargoyle obtained the grants. Obama did not encourage him to apply for the money, he said, and Funnye denied using family connections to pressure Obama to approve the application!!
Well WELL Well ...What do you Know !!!

This is what ""Obama" Don't want YOU to Know or see !! After watching this, the Question is : Why is Obama NOT in Jail ?? And Why is the Newspapers NOT Asking "Where is the money coming From ? In My opinion , it's Coming in by the Boat-Loads from the Middle-East !

John McCain's warnings of lax oversight and imminent insolvency of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is well-known to the studious, but can anyone link to a speech or piece of legislature from Obama doing the same? I know that as a community activist in Chicago, he was instrumental in strong-arming lenders to underwrite mortgages to high-risk borrowers; and that he urged many poor citizens to take out loans that were obviously, unaffordable to them; and that he has collected more money from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in political contributions than any other U.S. Senator in U.S. history (that is, other than the chairman of the oversight committee -- Sen. Dodd); and that he has a number of these "Masters of the Univers" working for his campaign and acting as advisors; but can anyone show that he acted responsibly on this issue?

You might want to cling to your guns for another reason, eating.
Why? The government runs on a percentage of private business revenue. Thanks to Clinton during the 90s the US economy is basically a ponzi scheme running on inflation and credit. Taxable revenue is decreasing due to the decline in the economy, thank you taxes and regulation. The government will try to increase revenue by increasing business taxes, capital gains taxes, and death taxes, further hindering businesses and entrepreneurs. The government will then try doling out money it doesn't have to the disadvantaged. For the first time in this countries history just borrowing more money will not be an option. This will put more upward pressure on taxes. The gov will then just start printing money, can you say hyper-inflation.
Without a functioning industrial base the US would be at the mercy of foreign countries for handouts.
Who gets elected could be irrelevant soon and you can bet your butt that both Lord Obama and McCain will do OK in an economic melt down. All you liberals that looked down your noses at Palin's ability to field dress wild game could be singing a different tune if this country continues to rely on the tax and regulate mentality.

    ibigcowboy---

Your 3:59 post requires time traveling. On the one hand you write of Kerry in 2004. Then time travel, in a nanosecond to the Republican primary in South Carolina in 2000. Where you somehow come up with the conclusion that W attacked McCain's genuine credentials as a bona fide American hero. The battle, between W and McCain, was over McCain's comments and attitudes about evangelicals.

It caught my eye, in your post, because the only people that would not consider Sen McCain a true patriot and bona fide American hero would be radical leftists, who have no respect for the men and women who have sacrificed for the freedom you enjoy in supporting the former community organizer Obama.

The only people that would conclude that John Kerry and John McCain are not bona fida war heros and true americans would be radical politicians from both parties. The base cruellty of my comments brought out the true argument on this post. Politics drives everything. Those who look but don't see are destined to their miserable fate. The republicans don't lie to the American people. They hate government and when elected to power ruin the government, all the while enriching themselves and their cronies. However this time they have gone too far. America and the world will pay the price. The democratic party will clean up the mess but it will take time and patience.I would encourage all intelligent and driven people of both parties to get involved the Democrats cannot do it alone. All Americans have to believe in good government and a functioning government, Reagan and Bush have so stoked the fires of anti government that we burned down the house unfortunately the american people are still inside.

Obama followers are sick of the same old thing from the Bush party. They want change. Well after Obama raises taxes we will all be making changes alright. You think money is tight now, wait until he admittedly raises taxes and spending to the tune of near a trillion dollars. I can’t wait to be a real patriot and pay more taxes. The cool thing is that the reason our economy is in the toilet is because of the democrats that have held the majority in the house and the senate. They have repeatedly blocked any bills to help regulate the spending from Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac. But who cares, we do not want another Bush. Obama admits that he is friends with a known domestic terrorist, but who cares we can’t afford another Bush. The last time I checked Bush wasn’t running for president. I wish we had some better choices but we don’t. The facts are that Obama is going to raise taxes, something we all do not want. McCain says he is going to deregulate and cut spending, at least that sounds better. Don’t think for one minute that just because you make less than $42,000.00 dollars that you will be safe. Raising taxes on the rich people that control the work force will only cause them to find ways to save more money, most likely by cutting their work force or hiring people for less money. The good news is that there will be plenty of jobs at minimum wage.

If you want to know about the elitist Harvard mentality read a book called "Expecting Adam". It's written by a woman who was attending Harvard with her husband. In it she details how, after becoming pregnant, she finds out that the child has Down Syndrome. She describes how she is pressured to abort the child by fellow students and faculty. While not a "pro-lifer" she paints a very unflattering picture of Harvard's cultural intolerance to imperfection.
If you want to know what it's like to be a parent of a disabled child this is a good book.

    huffy :
Great post got my point I see. Who is the president? When Obama gets a ironclad majority in the congress maybe than congress will clean up this republican mess. To be partisan I would suggest you act like a grownup and accept the complete and utter failure of the present republican ruling philosophy. I ask for a joining of ranks to solve the problems and you point fingers.Great Start! Maybe Alaska should secede if the state is filled with neophytes like you. Let me paraphrase that great communicator Ron Reagan: "Good government is the solution. Bad government is the problem." Elect people who believe in good government not those who wish to destroy it.America got what it wanted, republicans in charge who drove the government in to the ground. Reap what you sow you good conservative republicans. Watch your stock portfolio go down the drain as the rest of the world reacts to the unbridled greed and mismanagement created by the mantra that all government is bad. Learn the lesson which the "greatest generation" failed to pass on to the next generation. The sooner congress reregulates wall street and the banking system the quicker the world will recover.
