Trooper issue turns into smear campaign

Stumble It!Sarah Palin entered the Alaska political scene during a time when rumors of oil and gas company improprieties were being whispered behind closed doors in Juneau. She got involved in government service, started seeing the strong arm of special interests affecting the executive and legislative branches of government and wasn’t willing to just stand by and be quiet like others had been. She blew the whistle and, as they say, “the rest is history.”
VECO, the oil service company, had been influencing legislators to get tax rules changed in the major oil companies’ favor, so they could get a natural gas pipeline built. The problem was not that VECO asked legislators to vote a certain way; it was that VECO reimbursed employees who contributed to campaigns and, in some cases, VECO officers actually handed money to legislators for their personal use.
Gov. Frank Murkowski put Sarah Palin on the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission as co-chairman and ethics director. Not long afterward, she blew the whistle on her co-chairman, who was also the chairman of the Republican Party of Alaska. The Alaska Public Offices Commission imposed the largest fine in its history on the party boss for his misuse of the public office.
Palin ran for governor and was elected by a large margin despite absolutely no support from the Republican Party. After her election, she took on Big Oil by implementing the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act, which put a fair rate for petroleum revenues back on the table and spurred the companies into action to get a gas line started. Her support of fair taxes on the oil companies made her a lot of enemies but nothing compared to the adversaries created by her strong stance against corruption.
Joe Miller and I decided to go down to the Alaska Republican convention as delegates to try to oust the party chair. We believed as long as he was the leader of the party, people would lose faith in the party’s values. When the governor heard about our efforts, she got involved.
Gov. Sarah Palin spoke at the convention and asked everyone in the room to stand up for change in the party leadership — to literally stand. More than half the people in the room did! The party boss and his followers, however, through a series of crafty parliamentary proceedings and some outright breaking of the rules, avoided votes until many who wanted change gave up and left.
Gov. Palin really earned my respect because she was willing to stand up when so many were so comfortable sitting down. She was willing to take a politically risky move against the most powerful people in the state and to do it with passion.
The “Troopergate” investigation is purported to be a “fair and unbiased” look at the governor’s reassignment of Walt Monegan from his job as Department of Public Safety Commissioner. Allegedly, the governor’s staff put pressure on Monegan to fire Alaska State Trooper Mike Wooten, the governor’s ex-brother-in-law.
The moderator appointed by the Legislative Counsel’s chairman was Democratic state Sen. Hollis French of Anchorage, who had worked closely with Monegan, without the governor’s approval, in attempting to get funds for the Department of Public Safety.
The investigator picked for the case was Steve Branchflower, whose wife, Linda, worked with Monegan for many years as a detective in the Anchorage Police Department. When Monegan was named Anchorage chief, the Anchorage Daily News (Jan. 31, 2001) summarized Linda Branchflower’s comments, saying she praised him as “a respected supervisor because he listens to his employees and isn’t afraid to change course if something isn’t working out.”
Sen. French has said publicly that he believes the investigation could lead to Sarah Palin’s impeachment, that the case would probably be damaging and that they had decided to shorten the investigation for an “October surprise” before the Nov. 4 presidential election.
It has become increasingly apparent that the case is being used as a political smear attack, funded by taxpayer money, against the McCain-Palin ticket by strong supporters of the Obama campaign.
Sarah Palin has thrown out the idea that government is a place for “good old boys” and corrupt politicians. She has become the standard bearer for standing up for what is right, even when the costs are high. A small-town American woman, who still “clings” to her “religion and guns,” has created a tidal wave of enthusiasm and hope for the Nov. 4 election.

Top Ten Reasons that the Investigation into Sarah Palin is Fair.
1. It began with a 12-0 vote of eight Republicans and four Democrats.
2. The President of the Senate, a Republican, voted in favor of the investigation.
3. The Speaker of the House, a Republican, voted in favor of the investigation.
4. The investigation began in July, well before Governor Palin was placed on the national ticket.
5. Governor Palin pledged over and over to cooperate with the investigation. Here's a quote from a KTUU story July 18, 2008. "We would never prohibit, or be less than enthusiastic about any kind of investigation. Let's deal in the facts, and you do that via investigation." And another from Sharon Leighow, Governor Palin's press secretary in an Anchorage Daily News story from July 29, 2008. "The governor has said all along that she will fully cooperate with an investigation and her staff will cooperate as well."
6. The Project Director, Hollis French, was not a member of the committee that started the investigation.
7. The Republican senator that supplied the crucial vote in favor of subpoenas has a John McCain for President sign in his yard, and he represents the area around Governor Palin's home town.
8. At the meeting when subpoenas were issued, every member present from the House Judiciary Committee voted to support the Senate's subpoenas, including the Chairman, a conservative Republican, and the vice-chair, a conservative Republican.
9. The investigator, Steve Branchflower, who is actually gathering the facts and writing the report, has no ties to either party.

Senate President Lyda Green who is behind the investigation has been attacking Sarah Palin publicly for several years now. She may be an (R) but if you spell it out its R-I-N-O, she caucused with the Democrats and created the Majority Organization with Democrats chairing the majority of the chairmanships. Lyda worked extensively with Sen. Ben Stevens, Sen. John Cowdery, Rep. Pete Kott, Rep. Kohring, Rep Tom Anderson, and Rep. Bruce Weyrauch, all people who are either convicted or under a cloud of suspicion for their involvement in illegal activities with Veco. To say because she supports the investigation its ok is quite a long shot, the truth is Sarah Palin's "attacking [of] Republican corruption" made Lyda feel threatened. The Speaker of the House is John Harris who has been adversarial to Sarah Palin since she stepped into office and especially after Sean Parnell ran for Congress, the seat Harris was really hoping to run against Young for. Harris actually called a vote of the House of Representatives to ask for Parnell's resignation as Lt. Governor because of his run for the Congress.

I love it...the McCain/Palin administration takes a bipartisan investigation, turns it partisan by immediately stonewalling and withdrawing cooperation once she got the V.P. nod, and claims they cannot support an investigation that has become partisan. Their hermetically sealed logic lets no facts in or out. And now we get to listen to the prattle from the "palinfights" crowd claiming this is an Obama ploy: that's too RICH. Take the tin foil cap from your head and perhaps something will sink it!

This cover-up probably is worse for the Palin/McCain ticket than just getting the investigation over with would have been. To me it signals that they have the wrong instincts for having open government. I am tired of (and angry at) the Bush administration penchant for secrecy. I don't want it repeated.

To those of us who are well read, and understand how Government procedure is designed to work, it is blatently obviouse that this whole "October Suprize" [d]aydream is a clear sign Mr. French failed to read the chapter about grievable complaints and investigations (After all he does hold a (Juris doctor)), He is chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committeeand is a former assistant district attorney so he should know better! (Or maybe He does).

To conduct this investigation by the letter of the law, one must refer to applicable Administrative Codes, in this instance The (AAC'S) or Alaska Administrative Code.
Administrative Procedure in such instances must be fully exhausted
[B]efore the matter may be properly brought to the attention of the Court.,
So, this whole mess when brought before any Competent Court of the State will be dissmissed as procedurally improper, thus wasting govermental funds which could be used wiser elsewhere.
This also tells Me that Mr.French is willing to to abuse power under color of Authority to try to destroy the United States by seeking vengence for some percieved wrong done to just a few more members of the "Good O'l-Boy's Club (A trooper who Drinks and Drives A State owned Emergency Responce Vehichle, Stun Guns a Young Child, and Poaches a Big Game Animal, and A Public Saftey Commissioner who is Terminated for insabordination (and yes it did just happen to be a coincidental BONUS)

As I have posted before- the only thing McCain has going for him is the "sheeple" vote and the people who aren't voting for Obama because of his skin color, that's a vote that NOBODY will have the courage to openly say was their reason for their choice of candidate because racists are to cowardly to admit it.

Judging from the feirce response against Palin she must have been doing something to invoke this lashing out. When I see who is reacting and their tactics I know it must be right. Palin for President! Everybody I talk to would vote for Colon Poweell for President If Obama loses its not because he is black its because he is who he is. Not presidential material and the Democrats haven't paid enough in benefits to buy the vote.
The troopergate investigation is a political smear. Most reports leave out the fact that the Alaska State Troopers belong to an affiliate of the AFL-CIO and that this union, the AFSCME, is one of the most active supporters of Obama and have a front page story in their website that says they sent the largest AFL-CIO delegation to the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

The separate interviews on 60 Minutes tonight (9/21) said it all. McCain was vague and unsure of himself, offering little in the way of constructive ideas on how to fix the mess the Republicans have put us in over the last 7 1/2 years. Obama, on the other hand, was very poised and self-confident and laid out his plans for this nation's recovery from the edge of the abyss. Anyone here with half a brain that watched the program could plainly see that Obama is presidential material and that McCain is past his prime.

It appears that Palin became Governor in Alaska and did so with no support from the Republican party. Do you think she kinda upset some old time, corrupt Republicans in the process. If she's so bad than can someone tell me why she has a better than an 80% approval rating in Alaska. And for the zillionth time on the Commissioner thing? Doesn't anyone out there know that the Governor can fire any Commissioner at any time, for any reason, and is answerable to no one for removing a Commissioner. Why should she have to defend her action? Sounds like some Republicans got squashed, libs are jumping on the band wagon and now it's national. Wonder how much money the libs and Obama are putting into this smear campaign?

Spare me the "I am holy" stance that Sarah is taking today. You are known by your last deed. You "cannot stand on your laurels" as my grandmother always said. Sarah may have stood up at one time but now she is not standing up. She promised open and transparent government. What are we getting. Nothing but "overlook what I am doing now because I once stood up." We need someone who doesn't just do something once and then proceed to throw sand in our face when we ask her to live up to her promise.

Henry, the apparent self anointed sage of this thread has spoken. If you want to follow a new direction of "HOPE AND CHANGE" then by all means be led about by the nose. I and many others have done a lot of reading into who is running for various offices and I and many hundreds of thousands of others know that neither the Republican nor the Democrat candidates who are running for office are perfect. Fortunately perfection is not required. My candidate of primary choice is not running and/or has no chance of winning. Alan Keys or Tom Tancredo would be my primary choices, however, they are for all real purposes not in the race.
I have no doubt that Barack can bring some measure of "CHANGE" and I also have no doubt that as a result of such change there will be a whole lot of people with a whole lot of newly formed "HOPE" who will have their "HOPE" dashed.
People who support the Obama campaign think that their candidate is ideal. Personally, I am a BROWN skinned American with a mother and a Father who both were 100% Mexican (meaning an amalgam of local Indian and Spanish blood - aka Mestizos) I know what improper discrimination is and I also recognize what proper discrimination is. An example of improper discrimination is when a person is judged by the color of their skin and NOT BY THE CONTENT OF THEIR CHARACTER (Recall the Martin Luther King Speech, "I have a Dream"); PROPOER discimination is to REFRAIN from eating out of the toilet when experience and investigation has shown oen that there is nothing health to be gleaned from such a location. That is the difference. Just as the density of skin pigmentation is not an automatic "DISQUALIFIER" for an office NEITHER is it an automatic QUALIFICATION for an office. One must examine and analyze and make an informed DISCRIMINATING CHOICE.
I have done my home work and the media circus' disinformation and the Chicago Mud Slinging Political Machine's LIES NOTHWITHSTANDING we, each of us needs to examine and make the right choice.

Obamas at least has a CLEAR plan, McPalin simply drones on the same speeches over and over again, they can get away with it because most of their supporters can hardly comprehend what they're saying anyway- they just like the way Sarah looks and the fact that McCain is a War veteran and just happens to be white, such as the way people that supported bush are and they support McCain for the same reasons.
People need to actually pay attention to their candidates rather than just sit there transfixed in awe at Princess Palins lipstick when she speaks, McCain is such a bore I can see why he got a pit bull like Palin.
We don't need animals to run our government, we need people who will do the OPPOSITE of republicans and work for the benefit of the American public and not their rich golf/business buddies.

Not only is this statement preposterous and unverifiable, it also SHOULD have no bearing on the election. So, if you truly despise discrimination based on skin color or ethnicity, why bring up Obama's ethnic background in such a negative fashion?
In any case, I have done my investigations. I have done my research. I know who I am voting for and why.

In an earlier post I had mentioned Barack Hussein Obama's middle name. Another poster thought that I was saddling Mr. Obama with a fictitiously created and ascribed name; The Main Stream Media has been so successful in hiding many aspects and many FACTS about Barack Hussein Obama that that fellow poster actually had never heard that "HUSSEIN" was, in point of fact, Mr. Barack Hussein Obama's given middle name.
Similarly many people are under the mistaken impression that because Mr. Obama is a Senator from a Middle American State that Mr. Obama is therefore a regular African American. I went to a university in the lower 48 and I had an African American roommate. I similarly have had a number of African American Friends including fellows who have instructed me and fellows who I have instructed who are African Americans. The background and matters of importance that has been related to me by these folks bears almost NO resemblance to the agenda and background of Mr. Barack Hussein Obama.
People need to learn the actual background of Mr. Obama. They need to be aware of his actual ethnicity ONLY BECAUSE he, himself is so FOCUSED on portraying himself as an "AFRICAN AMERICAN". If he were not so repeatedly making comments like .... I am not a typical presidential candidate and do not resemble the folks on the dollar bill, CHUCKLE CHUCKLE CHUCKLE...., one might be able to pass a straight faced test to any claim that Mr. Obama were not portraying himself as a regular African American who is not relying on his LIE as to his ethnicity to attempt to psychologically bludgeon the weak willed and self loathing lighter skinned American Population, and real regular "AFRICAN AMERICANS" who have not engaged in the Marxist training and who have not had American Terrorists (Mr. William Ayers of the Weatherman underground Group) as friends and proponents. Although never convicted of any crime, Mr. William Ayers told the New York Times in September 2001, "I don't regret setting bombs...I feel we didn't do enough." In addition, people need to know what kind of "Christian Church" Mr. Barack Hussein Obama attended for 20 years with the Reverend Jeremiah Wright Preaching the slimy bilge that has been repeated to a limited degree in the media.
If you and others think that Mr. Obama is a great Presidential Candidate then "go for it". I simply want to assure myself that folks who are shielded from TRUTH by our Socialist promoting media at least have an opportunity to learn the TRUTH about Mr. Barack Hussein Obama.
I also have researched, as have most of my friends; From Law Enforcement to military to many Attorneys and housewives, most of the folks that I know are joining me in voting for John McCain and Sarah Palin.

The McCain campaign is certainly living up to its recent reputation as the presidential candidate with the sleaziest campaign ever. The compulsive lies that continue to spew forth from the mouths of McCain and Palin are doing nothing but making them appear to be the sleaze bags that they are. Shame on them!
There is no doubt about McCain/Palin's allegience to America. There is a showdow of doubt about Obama. You who want to overlook that doubt can vote for him - it's a free country. Or it has been but for how much longer remains to be seen.

That doesn't mean that I think even 5% of the population would agree with Andrew on all his main issues. He IS quite extreme and those he professes to want as president are quite extreme as well.

I seem to find that his use of Marxism and Socialism in his posts quite repetitive and not inventive except to dwell on an archaic fear of said words. I also find that the ranting no be no more than background noise, since the first post and the last post of his I have read are essentially the same.
However, I will give him points on consistency of stance.
I have noticed that those farthest on the political extremes don't have good writing skills. They simply repeat slogans and misinformation. That Andrew is still as well spoken as he is for being so extreme is worthy of congratulations.

Wow! I finally found the venue where some of the Alaskan lefties reveal how much they suffer from their angst and anger against Sara.
It must be difficult to be part of the 20% minority. I'm sure that lefties way up north in caribou country are no differrent than the lefties way down south in alligator infested Florida. Poor lefties everywhere suffer from the same malady, they need to hate something or somebody.
Its medical fact that it is unhealthy for people to hold in thier frustrations, live with grinding internal hatred, or suffer with the debilitating effects of jealousy. Sales for tranquillizers must by up in Caribou country.
However, lefties in Alaska are fortunate that through the good graces of the Miner, they have this commentary to let off steam. Its cathartic and good for the soul.
In the land of gators and swamps, south Florida, the lefties have no longer a co-conspirator in two of the largest newspapers in south Florida. These papers, long infested with lefties in their news (bias) coverage have recently let go about 400- 500 employees each. The fed-up readership began wising up and canceling subscriptions. Now these papers are on the brink of their very existance.
Lefties don't understand one of the most basic of business rules, "you don't continually insult your customers". That cost them plenty. Now their is hardly any editorial commentary and they rely on letters to the editor which they carefully filter and balance to cover "all spectrums of opinion".
Now the south's swanpland lefties have no venue for their venom and hatred.
Alaskans (lefties included) should feel grateful for the Miner to give you this commentary opportunity.
Let's all be political correct here...maybe in Sen. Obama's case (I don't know)...they are not "ARICAN-AMERICANS"...they are Americans of African descent...they are "AFRICAN-AMERICANS" only if they were born in Africa and then immigrated to the United States! The same is true with any other nationality! If you weren't born abroad, then you are an American first and your nationality is second! Sorry for this pet peeve!

Even for us moderates it is cathartic to be able to relieve the stress built up from watching years of watching bone-headed political decisions that hurt this country I love.
