Juneau hiring avalanche forecaster

Published Thursday, September 11, 2008

JUNEAU -- The Juneau Assembly has authorized spending $55,000 to help pay for an avalanche forecaster this winter.

City Manager Rod Swope says he looks at the expenditure approved Wednesday as insurance.

The forecaster will test snow on Mount Juneau and prepare information about potential slides in threatened neighborhoods. Residents will be able to check online for the daily danger level.

Doesn't the State DOT already have in place where they trigger potential avalanches? Oops.....just realized that this is the city of Juneau.
