FAIRBANKS — If there was a common theme among Sarah Palin supporters at Wednesday’s rally in Fairbanks, it was lipstick.

Sign after sign made reference to the governor’s now famous line spoken at last week’s Republican National Convention that the only difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull is lipstick.

“Read my lipstick: Sarah Sarah” read one sign.

Several women were walking around the rally beforehand sporting large candy lips in honor of the Republican nominee for vice president.

Ken Broker, a volunteer at the rally held a sign that read “You can put lipstick on a community organizer, but they’re still just a community organizer,” a direct dig at a comment by Barack Obama earlier in the week that the Republican promise of bringing change to politics was like putting “lipstick on a pig.”

Many supporters saw the comment as an insult to Palin.

“He’s picking on our girl,” Broker said. “It didn’t need to be said.”

Gwendolyne Jenkins on the other hand didn’t have any references to lipstick on her sign, but pictures of dogs and the message “Be nice to Sarah or Alaska will set the hounds on you.”

Jenkins, who believes the national media has been too hard on Palin and her family the past two weeks, actually voted against Palin for governor in 2006, but says she has changed her mind about Palin while she has been in office.

“I voted wrong the first time,” she said. “I won’t do it again.”

However, others have not been convinced that Palin is the right woman for the vice presidency. About 100 protesters gathered outside Alaska Aerofuel during the rally both to object to Palin and support Obama.

“I know Alaskans love Sarah, and I have nothing against her personally, but I don’t feel she has the qualifications,” said Jean Anderson, holding a sign questioning transparency in government, “If McCain wanted a woman, why not pick one that was qualified?”

Though the state Republican party asked those not supporting the McCain ticket to skip the rally, Gail Flodin still went hiding an Obama ‘08 sign under her coat, though she didn’t display it. Flodin said she was disappointed in the way Palin had been handling herself since the Republican convention, comparing her speeches to the rhetoric of conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh.

“That type of speech is mocking and belittling, and I’ve never heard her use that language in state speeches,” Flodin said. “It really brings her down.”

100 protesters? Generous count -- I saw maybe two dozen.

But I really wish there was some way to combine the best elements from both candidates: The pro-development and pro-nuclear portions of Palin/McCain with Obama's youth, education reforms, pro-science and health care views.

I really wish Palin was running for president instead of vice president -- try as I might, I can't bring myself to vote for a man (McCain) who doesn't use the Internet. Ah well, maybe in 2012 we'll see Palin run against Obama. That'll be a treat.

I second that there was no way 100 protesters there. When we arrived at 5pm there 5 with signs and a few more with those waving. All but 3 were children. When we left there was MAYBE 25 Obama supporters.

Thank you to the protestors for being civil! You gave me an excellent opportunity to teach my children just how great our country is to allow us freedom to protest, peacfully assemble and VOTE!!

“He’s picking on our girl,” Ken Broker said. “It didn’t need to be said.”

.... Yep, here come the cries of sexism. If Sarah Palin can toss hardballs at her political opponents, she should be able to get them tossed back right at her. She stepped up to the plate, now she gets to play ball with the big boys. There's no room for this "not fair, she's a woman" stuff. It's all fair game, Ken Broker.

And for the record, that comment Obama about pigs and lipstick made wasn't even directed at Palin.

Yeah, that estimate on the number of protesters is waaaay high. But it is nice to know that despite the vitriolic flame-wars on this site, we can keep our mouths shut and remain civil in public.

Thanks, Gov, for making Fairbanks the first stop on your homecoming tour. Suck it, Anchorage!

And it was apparently an acceptable use of the lipstick on a pig comment when McCain made it in regard to Hillary a few weeks ago. . .
but oh well! Suffice it to say, Obama wasn't talking about Sarah when he said it.

Preston, McCain himself used this stupid, time-worn expression in a speech a couple years ago (I believe it was 2004? someone out there may have heard it and can say for sure). As has Charlie Rangel, the present VP (I refuse to write his name), and several others. It is as old as the hills. But purposely saying someone is a Muslim in order to scare voters away from voting for him? No, I don't see the parallel personally. If, on the other hand, people misrepresent Gov. Palin's Christian views/beliefs (I have heard a lot of crazy stuff of late) I hope you all who know better will correct the misinformation. And if it's true, I hope you will confirm it, not try to whitewash it or start talking about Biden or who knows what.

I am pleased to hear that the Governor received such a nice welcome home, as she deserves. But seriously, someone who was there, are these rumors true that she was using a TelePrompter? You're kidding, right? She's been giving speeches since forever -- it makes no sense. I assume this must just be a rumor. Can anyone who was there verify?

Didn't look like she was using 'em to me. Someone said the little black things set up on either side of the podium were teleprompters, (I don't know), but when she finally got there, I never saw her look at them.

She occasionally looked down at the lecturn, as if she may have had an outline. She's done that before with us; it's okay.

But teleprompters, well, I don't like that idea.

what the papers here in the east are emphasizing is the fact that she is just sticking to a "script" so far, not speaking to reporters, saying the same things she said at the Convention. why not just let people get to know her as you all do? time is running out here. for most number 2's, who cares, right? but if McCain is elected, and it's looking good for him, she could be #1 before we know it. would be nice for everyone to have a clue who they are voting for. put simply, you know you're REALLY in love once you see the woman you're dating WITHOUT the lipstick, and still think she's the most beautiful thing you ever saw. that's the woman you'll be living with, so to speak -- not the one behind the mask.

Was Mayor Whitaker part of the thousands inside or the 100??? outside. As far as teleprompters go, who cares. It is easy to get distracted when speaking to large groups of cheering, excited people, and those just help you stay on course. I think the message she delivered at the convention was great. Her job is to create a positive image for McCain and encourage people to vote Republican. She still has more executive experience than the other 3 on the ticket. I can't wait for November 4th, it will be a night to remember.

    mmafan,

Maybe because Obama isn't the governor of this state? Face it, in the grand scheme of things Alaska doesn't mean anything in this election. Three electoral votes, big deal. The amount of resources it would cost to come up here and campaign would not be worth it. Plus, how successful would he even be? You're downright dumb if you think he would even get 10% of the votes here.

The only reason Palin came here is because if she didn't the democrats would use it against her. How would it look if the governor of this state didn't even bother showing up in four months. But I can guarantee you this is the last time you'll see her here before the end of the election.

I love the standard, "If you don't like it you can GEEEIIIT OUT!" Do you say that in the same voice you say, "DAY TOOK OUR JOBS!!"? I'm sure if it was up to you none of us would ever be able to express any sort of sentiment that goes against what you believe. Unfortunaltey there's a piece of paper that guarantees us all the right to express whatever we want. And then when you say, move to Canada...or Afghanistan? Hahahaha! Why didn't you just say move to Canada or... Uzbekistan or Kazakhstan? O wait, that's right, Afghanistan that's where all, "'DEM TERRARRISTS" live. So, it's a logical conclusion to say that not only should we not be able to express any oppinion but differs from yours, but if we do... we're now terrorists.

    OK, that makes sense.

How will we benefit? The only way Alaska survives is through earmarks and porkbarrell spending that she is now frowning upon and McCain says he will not allow anymore by using his veto power on legislation that includes earmarks. It seems to any rational observer that if McCain and Palin get elected, Alaska will be in for some tough times.

Pinhead, Teleprompters Please, thats what you choose to pick on. The Lady has been on the road day and night, flew in late and took the time to come to Fairbanks to deliver her first speech. And you are disappointed she used teleprompters! She is scheduled to do her first interview this week, democrats have been stepping all over their ### because they have no idea how to attack her, so they try to belittle her. (congress woman from SC states "the only reason she was picked is because she hasn't had an abortion". How flipping off the wall is that. But then again, her husband the week before states "hurricane Gustavf hitting the rep convention was a sign from god to vote for obama". Those motown hits just keep on coming. (not racial, just a phrase) Let's just sit back and hear what the woman has to say.

BTW, foxalaska, I was there on the "outside" and there were about 70 people there. "I walked down the line of yer solders, trying to provoke some kind of protest." If no one responded to your provocations, then that just shows they had more class than you. People were there to support Sen. Obama and show that not everyone was willing to disregard the fact that Sen. McCain is the ONE running for Pres, not Gov. Palin, that some people are pretty mad that McCain campaign appears to be using Gov. Palin as a cheerleading celebrity pawn by saying things like "we'll put her out there if and when we want to", and that we don't want to elect another person whose overriding qualification at this point appears to be that she is someone you would want to party with or "do". Yes, she's got "executive experience"--a little bit, I might add, but the reality is when I watched her speak, I got that sinking feeling that reminded me of Bush...someone who has only a limited grasp of the facts but is willing to shoot from the hip anyway.

    Hmmm...

Lipstick on a pig - Sexist when a woman could be involved (but apparently only when your opponent uses it)

Perhaps "Set the hounds upon you" - Racist when an African-American could be involved?

Hypocrisy is not pretty wherever it comes from - although it can be amusing from a distance.

The man who invented " personality over policy" campaigning wins the election theory is being beaten in his own game by a conservative woman. It is laughable that now the Dems what to discuss policies. Watch them try to bring good old Bill into this, then we can begin to wonder who is really running for President, Bill or Obama. Bet Obama will have to promise Bill the "house" for his support.

As far as Hillary goes, how many remember that when her First Lady health care policy failed, Bill put her in a closet and ended the two for one campaign promise for the rest of his term in office. And now we have Joe Biden admitting he was the best pick for VP.

All I can say is Sarah Palin has definately put Alaska out there. Now the lower 48er's will know that Alaska is a big part of the United States of America. We have the same postage stamp, same currency, same federal taxes, same English language, same Bill of Rights, same Constitution and the same type of issues they have within their own states and OUR country regarding the elected officials.

Alaska, and her residents, being unique in many ways, are now on a bigger playing field. We are either on the field as a player or off the field as a spectator.

In the end, only two will make it to the White House. Republican or Democratic - the shape of things are to come in the next four years. We need to come together as Americans to make sure that the two elected follow through with the 'voice' of "WE,THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES'.

I was there...and I know teleprompters very well. There was none...she had notes.
But as I mentioned before, if you say pretty much the same things over and over for two weeks...repetition brings good things eventually.
She, like I, have Journalsim Degrees, and she has done television. Reading off the "fly" is what you are trained to do.
Now, the public needs to hear something different.
And please, lets hope its ISSUE-SPECIFIC!
I also have to comment on the "she's our girl, that didn't have to be said" comments made by my good friend Ken Broker.
To hell with being "our girl," she is running to be Vice-President of the United States (with all the fanfare you'd think she was running for President).
McCain chose her, and she said "Yes."
She now gets held to the same standards as the men, period.
    Remember...nobody saw this coming.
And when you run for an office of that magnitude, everyone wants to know the "who," "what", "when," "why," and "how" about you.
Being happy because she's representing Alaskans on such a grand national stage, but then crying "foul" everytime there's questions about what make's her tick, her views on the issues (which we still haven't heard), and alot of other things...is just plain wrong.
You know,I still play the game of basketball.
    Ken Broker has too......
Alot of times the fellas get a lady or two that wants to play with us as well.
I've never been shy in telling teammates or opposing players to "not go easy on the lady, just because she's a lady."
"She wants to run with the big boys....ante up and kick in, go play with just the ladies....or go sit down."
Sarah Palin played basketball "back in the day as well."
If she truly knows the game, she'll understand the true meaning of what I just said.
If you didn't expect a true challenge, why play the game?

LittleMike: Everybody's got an agenda. I find it amusing to hear people like you referring to the DNM as a liberal rag. I've been here a long time, and this is the first time in all those years that I remember anyone labeling the DNM as liberal. Love it. Fun stuff, really.

The ADN reported last night about 100. They revised it this morning, I'm guessing in response to criticism that they dare report actual facts. People who were there counted. I have pictures and could count from those as well, but it's not really relevant at all.

What is relevant is that your team wants to put two people in office whose judgment is questionable (McCain lately has looked a lot like the truthiness follower Bush and frankly, so does Gov. Palin), who are trying to win a popularity contest without meaningful discussion of the issues. Period. The McCain campaign is using Gov. Palin and it's probably going to bite them since her 'celebrity' will either fade or usurp McCain leaving us with a mini-Cheney.

Right on, OSN! It's about time they retire that exact speech that she made at the convention, and give us something pertinent to the issues at hand. The thing is, she has nothing really pertinent to say...they haven't gotten that far in their induction training. Watch how, once she leaves Alaska again in a couple of days, she won't be giving many, if any, interviews or speeches other than more of the same introductions/cheerleading for McSame, wherever he appears.
As I've said before...short of some B.S. manipulating of the campaign rules, she's going to be on stage with Joe Biden soon. There's no doubt in my mind that that spectacle will awaken some doubts in other's minds, also......

Please explain to use, BigMike, the inner workings of the DNM since you seem to be so keenly in touch. Since you seem to know how the organization is run, why don't you go on down there and apply for a job -- or do you prefer to sit behind your keyboard posting your neocon attacks and slamming every group, organization or individual who doesn't agree with you?

Yes, Obama is a good orator...when he has a rehearsed speech on teleprompter. Without his speechwriters and un-prepaired he says "er, uh, I mean, ya know, what I ment to say was er, uh, ya know what I meant was, ya know".....etc. Right up there with FDR and JFK, thinks fast on his feet.....ya know.

OldSkoolNook42 : you write posts as if they are poems... complete with atrocious spelling and grammar while reading like pseudo-stream-of-consciousness nonsense... and you have a journalism degree?

either you got it in a box of cracker jacks or journalism degrees are functionally worthless.

in what capacity are you familiar with teleprompters?

Glockmod 23 THANK YOU I have stated these same facts on here repeatedly to no avail. I was begining to think I was the only one aware.

The best part is not one response to your post. I think it's one of those "truth hurts" things. WAKE UP AMERICA THESE ARE THE THINGS THE COMMUNIST NEWS NETWORK DOESN'T WANT YOU TO KNOW ABOUT.

    Barack Obama’s Change ( Nut-Cases he Knows)

    1. William Ayers
    2. radical group the Weather Underground.
    3. Documents, 140 boxes full of them — includes agendas that clearly put Obama and Ayers in the same room for meetings of Chicago Annenberg Challenge, an educational initiative that Ayers was instrumental in starting and that Obama chaired in the 1990s
    4. Frank Marshall Davis. Davis was a father figure and mentor that often supplied Barack with career advice. What makes this relevant is that Davis was a known communist who belonged to a party subservient to the Soviet Union.

The Democrat Party of Today is NOT the same party of years ago! Matter of Fact, if John F Kennedy was able to see “What has happen to His Democrat Party” He would Walk Out, and Not look back on this outfit!
Matter Of Fact, If John F Kennedy was able to Come Back, I’m sure he would have most of the Democrat-Party investigated, and possibly Locked-Up
