Eclipse just misses trip to soccer final

Published Wednesday, September 3, 2008

FAIRBANKS — The Eclipse 97 girls soccer team of Fairbanks narrowly missed advancing to the championship game of the Starfire Labor Day Cup in Seattle over the weekend.

The Eclipse finished second in its group with 28 points, seven less than FC Crush of Silverdale, Wash. Only the top team in the group advanced to the championship game.

The Eclipse posted a 3-1 record, outscored its opponents 10-3 and recorded two shutouts.

“I’m very proud of how the girls played this weekend,’’ Eclipse coach Dave Veazey said in an e-mail. “They competed with these teams and showed we in Fairbanks can play with even the larger communities. We just need to get that indoor turf field built.’’

The Eclipse opened the tournament Saturday with a 5-0 wn over the Wen Fire of Wenatchee, Wash. Hannah Irvine scored three goals and Sharky Moisan had the other two for the Eclipse.

The Fairbanks team dropped a 2-1 decision to FC Crush in its second game. The score was tied 1-1 for most of the second half, thanks to Irvine’s goal to the far post.

With only seconds remaining in the contest, a loose ball went out in front of the net and a Crush player kicked it over the outstretched hands of Eclipse goalkeeper Kyra McGinty.

The Eclipse returned to its winning ways, rolling to a 3-1 victory over the UP Sparks, a club from the Seattle area. Elly Veazey scored twice and assisted on a goal by Erica Signor.

The Eclipse ended their tournament appearance with a 1-0 triumph over the Panthers of the Olympia, Wash. Cristina Brussell scored the game-winner on a breakaway in which she dribbled between two defenders and fired the ball low beyond the reach of the keeper.

Katie Hopper, Jenna Otis, Saffire Robinson and Angel Ocha led a stingy Eclipse defense in the physical battle.

Other Eclipse players in the tournament were Ashley Stark, Sarah Walling-Bell, Caroline Everts and Allison Hebard.

The Eclipse is also conducting tryouts at 5:30 p.m. today and Thursday at the Fairbanks Youth Soccer Association Fields for its 97 team and other age-group squads.

Nice job girls, looks like there's more Ak female soccer players in the pipeline. While guys hoops gets all the press there's a number of Alaskan girls doing well or just finished careers in big time D1 soccer. Carlye B is getting serious playing time for #1 USC, Megan M is playing at Wash state. Older sister starts for defending Conf USA champ Memphis, a team anchored last year by another Alaskan player from Dimond HS. Ak girls are also now or just finished playing at Northern Arizona, Montana.

Keep up the good work girls you're keeping Ak girls soccer on the map.

That is fantastic! I remember playing 20 years ago and going to tournaments in Hawaii, Colorado, etc. For a team that dominated in Alaska, we were incredibly outclassed in the states. It shows how far the sport, the players, the coaching, etc has come!

You deserve to be recognised, this is very very cool!

    Congratulations!
