Woman dies in horse attack on Kenai Peninsula

Published Thursday, August 28, 2008

ANCHORAGE -- A 48-year-old Ninilchik woman has died after she was attacked by her stud horse.

Alaska State Troopers say Sherrill Yates-Lukinich died Saturday before emergency responders arrived on the scene in the Caribou Hills.

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters says Yates-Lukinich was working with the horse alone in a barn, so what prompted the attack was unclear.

Peters says the woman's husband heard the commotion after the horse began stomping and biting her. The husband pulled the horse off of his wife.

According to Peters, the husband "took it upon himself to get rid of the horse."

Good for him! Condolences, however, on the loss of his wife.

Why would a horse do that to someone?

Stallions can be mean animals. PLEASE NOTE-- I said "CAN". Being around horses all my growing up years and unto now, I've had ,as I'm sure others out there have, many horses w/ many different dispositions. Stallions by nature are protective and aggressive animals. They can also be loving companions.
However-that said- They are also left very "intact". They still carry very strong hormones that can be triggered by any number of perceived threats. Even something as innocent as turning your back on them to retrieve something.
This is exactly why there is a very old and wise saying " That stallion would make a great gelding".
The same can be said of dogs, cattle, or..... . To many times owners are reluctant to "cut" their horse because they want the look, type, hype, notariety, that comes w/ owning a stallion.
Why did this horses do what he did? Who knows. However- in this instance, a dead horse is a good horse. Who knows where this one would have ended up.
Our prayers are with you sir. God bless you during this time.
    Peace

    Sniffles,

No one could be more correct than your statements as all of us who have ever worked with or had to be around studs can say.

The only thing to be said now is how sad this is for the family.
