Letter to the Editor

Proud resident

To the editor:

I am a very proud Alaskan and even prouder Fairbanks North Star Borough resident today. My mayor, usually identified as a Republican, but nonpartisan in his current office, will speak at the Democratic National Convention.

Why?

He believes, as I do, that Barack Obama is the presidential candidate who best suits the people of Alaska. Note, I do not include Alaska’s big business interests (oil/mining) nor its special interests (political/tourism related, etc.) — but of and for Alaskans who have real concerns, real needs and real hope for inclusion in our state’s political process.

We’ve been kept out of that process for too long by professional, ingrained politicians whose primary interest lies in their pockets.

Please make the effort, people of Alaska, to read Obama’s platforms, his votes, and his promises. He is one of the few politicians whose promises are kept and whose words are meaningful to those of us not on the payroll of special interest groups.

Whitaker does not believe in Obama, he believes in self promotion. The port authority fell through on a State level and now he is trying to get the Dem to back his retirement plan. Amazing what some people will do to get a job. How could anyone be proud of a man who will always put his own advancement over the needs of the people of this borough.

Too bad he wasn't more vocal about participating in the FEMA's CRS program. By not participating he has taken away the opportunity for consumers in flood zones to receive discounts on their flood insurance premiums.

Please email Mr. Whitaker and ask he if he plans to participate and help money stay in our community!!

I don’t have any problem with the Mayor going to the speaking at the Democratic Convention. However I don’t see how someone can separate the oil, mining, and tourism industries from the “people of Alaska.” A very large percentage of Alaskans are directly involved in these industries. The only major economic sectors left are government employment and commercial fishing. I have more respect for the former three than the later two, although commercial fishing would get moved up if it was not for the over-fishing and government subsidies.

So Karen, are you saying you were not proud to be an Alaskan before that? You and the mayor should move outside.

I used to be proud to be an Alaskan, but I have never been proud that I lived in the North Star Boro. I live quite a ways from town but am still in the boro and paying property tax to support the city and the boro bus. I would have to walk many miles in order to 'ride my bus'. Our wonderful mayor must be more of a moron than I thought if he is supporting the communist party.

Floodgal: I'm with you!! My husband and I are building a home right now and half of our property is in a flood zone, and the insurance is ridiculous!!! We had another piece of property lined up that I loved, but that was in an even worse flood zone and we couldn't afford that insurance.

why should we feel sorry for anyone who builds in a flood zone?

If you build in a flood zone, insurance should not be your largest concern.

Also, I was not aware that there was a North Star "Boro." Is that closer to a "burro" (donkey) or "borough" (political sub-region)?

For all the people just flaming Whitaker online in pretty much every letter to the editor, you act as if you could do a better job; can you?

Please run for office and lay out what economic and social strategies you have.

Also BigMike, if you read the Wall street Journal or any publication with economic insights, you'd see Obama and McCain have both laid out most of their strategies. Cliff note version: Trickle down tax breaks and cooperate credits (McCain) vs pre-bush taxation of the "rich" (no trickle down) and a stronger middle class (Obama)
