Police search vehicle involved in gang shooting

FAIRBANKS — Fairbanks police have searched a vehicle believed to be involved in the Aug. 15 College Road gang shooting but would not disclose what, if anything, they uncovered.
The 1999 Isuzu Amigo was described by several witnesses of the College Road shooting incident involving members of the Crips and Bloods street gangs. The Amigo was spotted Thursday afternoon near the Regency Fairbanks Hotel, on 10th Avenue, by a city employee who then notified police. The car had no license plates at the time.
Lt. Dan Welborn would only say that a search did not uncover any “earth-shattering” evidence. However, a key found on 21-year-old Aaron Young, a suspect in the shooting, did fit the lock on the car.
Young has been charged with second-degree misconduct involving a weapon regarding a drug crime and third-degree misconduct with a controlled substance with the intent to distribute, both related to last week’s incident. He also faces two additional misdemeanor counts of drugs and weapons misconduct not related to the shooting.
The city employee also described seeing a suspicious man leaving the scene of the Isuzu. Police located him driving another vehicle in the area, though he has only been charged with driving without a valid license and a probation violation. The 26-year-old, who has a history of drugs and weapons convictions, denied any involvement in the gang shooting, Welborn said.
Investigators say they will likely have enough evidence to charge someone else in connection with the shooting next week.
Welborn also noted that police continue to receive tips about the shooting, which left no one injured.
The school district and military communities have been particularly supportive, he said. Two of eight men detained and later released after Friday’s shooting are Fort Wainwright soldiers.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Fairbanks police at 450-6500.

For crying out load man, that is so sad. American soldiers invoved in the gang shootings. what is America coming to? Sort of scary, to think that my Grand children are growing up in this kind of crap. We have crooked polititians and lawyers who defend someone who is accualy guilty. Does not make any sense at all. I don't want to se Fairbanks become like another southern California town
I know the two fort wainwright soldiers will be punished. If they aren't DIS honorably discharged (they SHOULD be) and sent to fort leavenworth prison they will be stripped of rank, money taken from their paychecks, given extra duty and confined to the barracks when they aren't being escorted to work or wherever they need to go. They deserve the max punishment for their part in the gang activity and I'm sure they'll get it. I've seen time and again soldiers get booted out for lesser chargers or punished for minor ones so there's no doubt that these two will be used as examples before their fellow soldiers.
Now what will happen to the other SIX gang bangers who participated? Do they get fined, time in prison or will they just recieve a light slap on the wrist and told not to do it again afterwards being sent on their way?
The military community despises these people who take part in such activities and I can assure you we don't want them either. They're an embarrassment and a danger among us as well.
it's good to hear that the military will take swift and appropriate measures. please remember, this is our community. we live here, we are going to still be living here long after most the military folks are long gone. most of the military people who come here are just great. we love them. but please respect our home. nail these guys to the wall.
dozerdawg2, Fairbanks is already Californicated and this whole gang scene is just one more fine example. Anyone who thinks we're SO lucky to have the military bases here, as someone told me yesterday, has their head up their alimentary canal. That's where all this gang BS has come from. And I know military wives and others are going to scream "PREJUDICE!" and play the "military card" (just like the "race card" only this one is based on uniform, not color of skin) with flourishes of patriotic music and fluttering flags, but facts are facts: the gang crap comes from Outside via the military. I'd like to see the bases go away or corral their "warriors" on the base. Even the non-gang ones are out of control - just come out on the dirt roads outside of town on the weekend and witness the drunken shooting parties and trashed areas they leave behind. (Don't bother telling me to call the Troopers - they're busy and don't come out to the hinterlands unless it's a really juicy crime.)
Yeah, it may be "just a few" military members who are into this idiot lifestyle but if military people who are NOT in the crap want to set themselves apart, they need to step up and heavily police their own. People on base know who was involved in this situation - people talk, word circulates, it gets around - they know who the "gang bangers" are, and they need to handle it - hard and NOW!
There is altogether too much tolerance in this community for these "heroic" military who are actually just cheap punks and bad actors. Find them, apply strong discipline in the Alaskan justice style, turn them over to appropriate authorities, and then those authorities must ship them back to their own ghetto immediately. (And yes, the order in which I wrote that is the correct order in which to address this problem.) This turf is already taken - by Alaskans who care about maintaining our lifestyle - and we need to make that known.
I'm military but am a legit Alaskan resident who has made the fairbanks are my home since we arrived in 1989 I whole heartedly agree that regardless of where these gang members come from they should ALL be punished for their crimes.:)
I dearly love Alaska and we don't need this element here to spoil an otherwise very supportive, close community.:)
This NOT an attack on anyone but I honestly feel that IF the military did leave there would still be gangs in fairbanks among the civillians.
In each of the articles covering this gang acitivity it was made abundantly clear that there were ONLY 2 soldiers involved so the remainder MUST'VE come from the civillian community. I don't mean this to sound like I'm pointing fingers because thats not my intention. I'm just posting what the articles revealed in the details.:) There's NO excuse for such behavior regardless of where they come from whether military, civillian or otherwise.
Maybe the military presence is inadvertently providing those who don't want to see fault within their own ranks within the civillian community a means to shift ALL of the blame onto someone else because without us here who would they have to blame then (the natives, hispanics etc?)?(big grin) Sorry I couldn't resist that one.LOLOLOLOL
A Big Thank you to all involved.
To the military community:
A Big Thank you for being a part of my community. And for those of you who have family staying behind as you deploy, know that they are welcomed and safe in our community. May you come home to your families & our community safe. And for those of you who are the families of our deploying soldiers, you are part of our commiunity if you ever need support our whole commiunity is here for you.
Endoftheroad - It was my understanding that Fairbanks was established based on two things, gold/mining/trade and the military bases. Basically, in my humble opinion, if you have a problem with the military bases, unless you have lived here since prior to their construction back in 1939-1940, maybe you should be the one to leave...not them. The gangs do not strictly originate from the bases presence. Or do you have some way of proving that? Because, after all, having proof would constitute fact, not just your "opinion" ("but facts are facts: the gang crap comes from Outside via the military"). And just as LoneWolf91 said, they will be dealt with, and MUCH more harshly than any of the ones that participated locally. So maybe you should focus your concern on the other 90% of the people involved - you know, the local Fairbanks residents.
Does the 26 year old have a name to go with his priors? Would seem only fair to name Aaron Young and not the other.
"though he has only been charged with driving without a valid license and a probation violation. The 26-year-old, who has a history of drugs and weapons convictions, denied any involvement in the gang shooting, Welborn said."
Aaron Young has a history also and denied any involvement.
akcrazylady.
You have pointed out an important and interesting point of fairbanks history. It may never have existed if it wasn't for the gold miners and military.:)
I just hope that the other (civillian) gang members are forced to pay for their misdeeds as well.:) It should get the message across that the good people of this city won't tolerate the misconduct of these few gang members or shield them from the punishment they deserve simply beccause they're civillian.
I know the views of those on here who obviously hate the military don't reflect the voice of the majority and judging by the articles I've read the city police, state troopers and military are working together to nip this gang problem in the rear before it esculates.:)
What does "Californicated" mean?
Where is, "Californicated" defintion?
I don't see sunny sandy beaches, no 90-110 degrees, no Disneyland, no SeaWorld, no Knott's Berry Farm, no Magic Mountain, no Wild Life Sarafi, no Six Flags, over 100 colleges, top medical Schools, top Law Schools, toughest earth laws. The list goes on. But I don't see Alaska as "Californicated". 'Whatever' that means.
I see a beautiful Alaska growing strong. I can't ever see Alaska "Californicated" in most of those. But I can see a strong Alaska "Alaskaicated"(new word). That wont have sunny sandy beaches, no 90-110 degrees, no Disneyland, no SeaWorld, no Knott's Berry Farm, no Magic Mountain, no Wild Life Sarafi, no Six Flags.
We have our "Special Places" to go with our families, future "Special Places" to go with our families.
All of our families are part of our commiunity, building our commiunity together for our families and each other. If one's words was aimed at building our commiunity together for our families and each other, imagine the results. Thank you all who are helping to build our commiunity even when you feel low know there's those of us who Thank You and wish peace to you.
The 26-year-old wasn't named because so far he has only been charged with offenses that we don't normally report on. On the other hand, Aaron Young has been charged with offenses that we do normally report on that are in connection with an event a large number of people in the Fairbanks community are interested in.
endotheroad - Even though, by your standards, I will probably be judged as a "military wife" playing the "military card" amidst "patriotic music", but I will try anyway, especially since I wasn't ALWAYS a military wife. Once upon a time, I was a born'n'bred Fairbanks girl (wait...I still am!): born here, elementary through college here, played 'n' worked here, got married, gave birth, all right HERE in Fairbanks.
So... I've seen both sides. And, lemme tell ya...Fairbanks boys are no different than the military version in many ways: tearing up "the dirt roads outside of town on the weekend and witness the drunken shooting parties and trashed areas they leave behind" - as well as the numerous other areas (gang violence, underage girlfriends, ad infinitum) attributed solely to the military. These are behaviors that our Fairbanks boys (and girls) do too and you cannot fairly and accurately attribute all (or even most) of the bad behavior to the military. In fact, I'd say that in my experience, most of the time we went "tearing it up" was with my fellow Fairbanks friends and neighbors. Anecdotal, yes, but still reality.
If you persist in attributing all the "bad things" to the military, blaming them for the ills of our town, you are guilty of exactly what you thought you'd be accused of: prejudice. And that, too, is reality.
Mr. Davenport,
Californication is an attitude, not anything one can see or touch. It is changing our wild west frontier, rowdy, hard drinking, hard working way of life to match the lifestyle lived by those who move up here from the United States. We do not want this!! Some of us long for the old days of bar streets, prostitutes, and friends meeting and partying downtown. The days of the old Co-Op, Frontier Sporting Goods, and yes, the bars. Those are the things that were destroyed in 1983 and have never been replaced. We are instead left with a dead core area that most Fairbanksans and tourist care nothing about. It is a crying shame.
I truly believe Alaska is blessed to have military bases. It seems to me that a couple of guys that happened to be soldiers got caught up trying to fit in. I bet they signed up for the military to try to change and do something with their lives but ended up hangin with the wrong crowd. That happens easily in Fairbanks and Anchorage.
I dont know them and therefore will not judge them based on this story alone. I just hope they make better choices in the future.
Dozerdawg...YES this is sad. For decades there have been dirty politicians, military soldiers..and so on. Anyways these soldiers will be dealt with. However, I am not so sure that the others will. Most people think that soldiers get away with everything but I can assure you that if they are in my husbands unit they won't be here for long.
What I am angry about is that the military as a whole is getting critized when it is 2 soldiers that were involved not the army. Why is no one bashing the civilians or Aaron Young for their part in this?
This is extremely sad to me. I can't believe that STUPID Gang Sh*t has made its way to Alaska. WTF???? I couldn't believe it when the bloods and crips were killing each other in LA, nor at that time could I EVER believe it would reach NYC. I felt the young men here were just not stupid enough to join. We didn’t have gangs (like today) in 80's and early 90's in NY so I felt immune. Crack Cocaine caused more trouble then gangs back then. Of course through the prison system it made its way here and throughout the continental US, BUT ALASKA???? Man, I used to feel that if I ever wanted to get away (or get lost :-)) it would be to beautiful, clean, clear Alaska. I thought my worse problem would be the wildlife, Now I gotta deal with stray bullets. Anyone know if there are gangs in Switzerland?
****Teen arrested after shots fired at NYC officer
August 26, 2008 NEW YORK -
Police say they've arrested a member of the Bloods street gang for shooting at an officer posted on a New York City street corner.
Nineteen-year-old Keith Myers has been charged with attempted murder. Prosecutors say they don't have the name of his attorney, and there's no listing for a home phone.
Police say the officer was purposely distracted by a 15-year-old on a bike Sunday evening in Brooklyn before Myers fired five rounds in his direction. The shots missed. The shooter fled.
But police say investigators identified Myers using a security video that showed him opening fire and caught him at his girlfriend's home.
The 15-year-old also has been arrested. His name hasn't been released because he's charged as a minor.
