Alaska governor to speak at GOP convention

JUNEAU -- Four years ago, Gov. Sarah Palin went to the Republican National Convention as a wide-eyed delegate awed by the fast-paced environs in New York City.

Next month, she will address convention delegates at the four-day event in St. Paul, Minn., the same night as keynote speaker Rudy Giuliani.

"I hadn't even envisioned being governor back then," Palin said. "And I hadn't envisioned being a speaker until about a month ago."

Palin received confirmation about one week ago.

Organizers released the speakers lineup Wednesday. Palin will speak Sept. 2, a Tuesday, the second day of the convention.

Palin, who ran on ethics reform, joins a group of GOP veterans, including one-time candidate Giuliani, who will speak to the evening's theme: reform.

"I feel honored that they would want to hear an Alaskan perspective on reform needed in government, and an Alaskan perspective on prosperity for our nation," Palin said. "I don't think you're going to hear a message from anybody who embraces the status quo."

Much of Palin's message to a national audience has been resource development, particularly as it relates to her natural gas pipeline plans. Palin said she hopes to incorporate energy development into her speech.

Also speaking that night will be former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson, both opponents of McCain during primaries earlier this year.

Former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge is listed to speak that night as well. He and Palin have been mentioned as potential running mates for McCain.

Palin said she was told she will be an evening speaker, perhaps closely ahead of Giuliani's keynote address, which caps the evening.

A convention spokeswoman said the order of speakers has not been determined.

In a national on-line forum today I said, "if she speaks they expect big things in the future from her, if they don't have her speak they are missing a VERY big opportunity!".

The mayor addressing one convention, the governor the other. This is good news for Alaska. Usually we're on the national stage only as a curio. We're thought of as an eccentric bunch of fur-wearing, gun-toting, miners and hunters who each take in millions in oil money. Now maybe we'll be taken seriously.

I agree with 'Henry', considering that there are still people in this country who don't even know that Alaska is part of this Nation.
    Sad!
    Go Governor!

More proof that McCain will pick Palin as his VP. I think I'll buy an Alaskan flag in preparation for the celebrations.

Way to go Governer Palin. I do hope this is not too overwhelming with the large family and all. Thanks for what you do.

If Palin is picked as the VP and the McCain-Palin ticket wins, the Parnell becomes Governor. Unless, of course, Parnell wins his election. What happens then? Attorney General Talis Coburg becomes Governor. We will have an appointed governor.

Henry: Your head must be spinning with all of those possibilities. Yes, yes and yes...all are potentials. You have to admit...it really is kind of fun, isn't it?

henry, we are a bunch of fur-wearing, gun-toting, miners and hunters who each take in millions in oil money. Is there a problem with that? LOL!!!! And why would those qualities cause us to 'not be taken seriously! Davey Crockett anyone? Jim Bowie? Maybe we should rememer our roots....

I think that this means that the good Governor wont be chosen as running mate. This will be her introduction to a national audience, for consideration for 4 years from now. After all, she's been governor for a brief 2 years. And there is that little scandal brewing. Democrats would smell blood there.

Prime time though, it sounds like. That is pretty cool.

Take note, Mayor Whitaker, you schmuck.

For Palin to be recognised as a national asset for the Republican party is phenomenal. For Whitaker to be recognised as an enlightened "intellectual" by the Dems is the opposite of phenomenal.

why would Palin being Govener for only two years matter, Osama Hussein has only been a senator for a little over that and he is running for President, I personnally do not want to lose her but It could do a lot of good having here there...

She is in line and on track for the first female Presidency, not the first female vice presidency. Hillary already did that job for eight years. I resent the fur wearing remark, I wear micro-fleece when toting my gun and hunting.

It is so refreshing to read positive coments about Gov. Sarah Palin. I live down in S.E. Alaska and I am so sick and tired of reading so many nasty, hateful and sour grape lies written in about her in Juneau, Ketchikan, and Anchorage. What really gets me is the turn coats in her own party. The parties need to be whipped!! I love her and I voted for her! She is a honest, ethical person. I knew that both parties were waiting to pounce on her as soon as they could find something they thought they could kick her around on.
The parties would like to see her gone, way down the pike if they could get rid of her. She is a true leader chosen by the people NOT the parties!!!!! I hope the people will stand by her and stand up to the parties. Let them know its no longer business as usual in Alaska. We have a new sherriff in town and her name is Sarah Palin! I would love to see her in a national position after she cleans up the parties in Alaska.
