Three vessels free themselves after becoming stuck in Arctic ice off Alaska coast

JUNEAU -- Three Canada-bound vessels that found themselves stuck in ice off Alaska's northern coast have managed to free themselves and continue on their journey.

The Coast Guard says the ships reported Tuesday afternoon that they were stuck about 60 miles north of Point Barrow. A Coast Guard airplane headed out from Nome to assess the situation. When it flew over the ships Tuesday evening it reported they were no longer stuck and did not need any help.

The eastbound vessels were identified as the Western Patriot, Riverton and Hudson Bay Explorer. It is not known how many people are aboard. No injuries were reported.

The Coast Guard said earlier it was diverting the icebreaker Healy to assist the ships. After they freed themselves, the Healy was told to return to its normal operations in the Arctic. The Healy is homeported in Seattle.

Point Barrow is about 750 miles northeast of Anchorage.

So, surprise, surprise, surprise! It's going to take two days to get to the ships... glad it's not an oil tanker or a drilling rig gone gunnysack... The Coast Guard has said they aren't prepared for an oil spill or other environmental emergency in Northern waters. Guess this sort of points up their position.

Wait, Arctic Ice in the summer? They need an Icebreaker? I thought Al Gore's "consensus" told us it all melted. Now I'm confused...

Endotheroad, the U.S. Coast Guard does not perform cleanup of oil or chemical spills. They are merely an enforcement agency for applicable law. Clean-up is left to private companies that specialize in those areas of expertise. MrGreen, I agree with your observation, I thought Al Gore knew everything. :(

MrGreen, I am with you. What a quandry. August in the Arctic Ocean and they need to be rescued by ice breakers?

If you want to understand why this happened, please google "BBC The Great Global Warming Swindle" (minus the quotation marks). The film is an eye opener. Make certain to google the key speakers for more information on this, the single most important issue in our lives. Unseen forces are allying themselves to further enslave us.

It really started in 1913 for Americans. From there it has been downhill. If you think you still live in the "land of the free and the home of the brave", think again.

CBS ‘Early Show’ Warns: All Ice at North Pole May Melt This Summer
    June 27, 2008
Maggie Rodriguez, CBS “Early Show” co-host, said, in an upcoming interview with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair about global warming, “Also ahead this morning, we’ll talk about a disturbing new report from some scientists in Colorado who say that there is a very real possibility that for the first time we will see the ice in the North Pole melt away completely during the summer.”

On June 26, 2008, Mark Serreze, senior researcher a the National Snow and Ice Data Center and the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO, said there is a 50-50 chance that the North Pole will be ice free this summer. The weather and ocean conditions in the next couple of weeks will determine how much of the sea ice will mel, and early signs are not good, Mark said.

I thought all the North Pole ice was to be gone this year? Can Al Gore face himself in the morning? And just how big is that house in TN? "Stay tuned folks--now more from the Icebreaker Healy..."

olypopper - the Coast Guard is the "first line of defense" in maritime crises. They may not *clean up* an oil spill (I didn't say they did) but they are usually first on scene, has the legislated responsibility for **insuring** effective oil spill response, and are responsible for maritime safety, security and emergency response in all US coastal waters.

From the USCG website, from entries by RADM Arthur E. (Gene) Brooks,
    Commander, Seventeenth Coast Guard District
"I realized that we are not prepared for a major oil spill in the Arctic environment. The Coast Guard has no offshore response capability in Northern or Western Alaska and we only dimly understand the science of recovering oil in broken ice."
    http://www.uscg.mil/cgjournal/message.as...

Coast Guard Adm. Thad W. Allen: "We have the responsibility for maritime safety, stewardship and security," Allen said. "But how do you respond up there if you have no presence?"
    http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/lo...

There's more but I won't clutter up the forum with lots of links. Just do the research - the US is not prepared for what the oil industry is doing/going to be doing in the near future. I'm not saying we ought not explore resource options, just that we aren't prepared for the eventuality of a crisis.

It "warms" my heart to know that most Alaskans see through the great Global Warming swindle.
alaskaflower- I'll bet my next paycheck your right, no one will report this.
DistantThunder - love the pic! Our eyes don't lie.

    U. Gonzalez - thanx for the link. My "confused" statement was pure sarcasm slung towards Mr. Gore. And your right, this has been tried over and over - cooling(1920's), warming(1930's), cooling(1970's), and now back to warming again.

"Man-Made" my Butt! I'll continue to breathe, thank you.
Now, everyone ready for a COLD winter?
