Steese Highway update
Published Saturday, June 28, 2008
Phase three of the Steese Highway re-paving project is underway and has closed all four lanes from north of the Third Street intersection to south of the Johansen intersection.
The Trainor Gate/Steese intersection is closed to all thru and cross traffic.
The College Road/Steese intersection closed to all traffic on Thursday and will be closed for about six days.
Shannon Park, Hamilton Acres and Trainor Gate Road will be accessible from the Third Street intersection.
The main detour routes have not changed. This is the final stage of the project and, the Department of Transportation asks that motorists plan for delays, congestion and additional time to reach final destinations.
For more information, contact Michael Lund, Department of Transportation project engineer at 456-8833.

And the slowest most poorly executed road project contines.
Only in Alaska do we have 30 day road jobs that turn into 120 day jobs.
In the land of the midnight sun doesn't it make sense to have two 12.5 hr rotating shifts to complete the project in a timely manner and reduce the amount of time traffic needs to be congested in our busiest season? Oh.....wait a moment....that makes sense! Get a clue planning department!
Or maybe staff the projects with more than 2 guys. Does DOT pay by the traffic cone because that appears to be the only focus of the project.
What with global warming and the lack of tourists due to a sucky economy, road construction is the only reliable sign of summer up here at all. So suck it up and chill out.
alaskan family-talk to the City of Fairbanks about your concerns. There is a noise ordinance that prohibits the contractor from working at night. And if they were working at night, people would be complaining about the noise anyway. And if people weren't complaining about the construction, they'd be complaining that the road was falling apart and needed fixing. People have to bear some inconvenience to get improvements.
Sarvissa - No what we want is a resonable road construction process. I counted two pieces of equipment working today and 6 pickup trucks driving around. Something is wrong with that....
I have ask this before. Is the traffic control on this project a cost plus or was it included in the base bid? On these projects the contractor is paid for each traffic cone (of which there are plenty used on this project) and the longer the project the more the contractor makes so there would be no reason to get done quickly and we all pay.
Yeah why are they not working night crews. Why do they still have one lane on the the part that is already paved what is the deal with that. Is bert running the planning department and ernie handling the construction end of the deal.
How much $4/gallon has the community squandered driving around this project?
The paradigm has changed, it isn't just my time you are wasting, now it's a very significant chunk fuel/cash going down the drain.
Working 24 hours a day and working a full crew needs to be the norm on these jobs.
