Flint Hills’ books

To the editor:

I read with interest Sunday’s editorial concerning the fate of the North Pole refinery. I live in this community and would like to see petroleum products readily available for residents of the Interior.

What I did not see in that editorial was any mention of Department of Natural Resource Commissioner Tom Irwin’s request to see Flint Hills’ financial records; something that was reported in the Daily News-Miner within the last week and apparently something Flint Hills is reluctant to do. And for what reason?

If I approach a bank for financial help or relief, I recognize it is good business practice for the lending institution to request a financial statement from the borrower.

In this case Flint Hills may not be the borrower, however they are asking for relief from a arrangement that they agreed to.

I think the state and Tom Irwin should stick to their guns.

I think DNR denied their request pending disclosure of their financial information.

Anyone who questions our beloved oil companies is not only un-American, but even worse, un-Alaskan! The reason our gasoline prices are so high is that some people think oil companies should be subject to the same rules as the plebeians. Silly fools. They're causing all of us to suffer. Don't they realize that all animals are created equal, but some are more equal than others?

It is true that oil companies will sit on recourses to keep prices high. It is even true that companies like BP have sponsored the overthrow of governments that wont hand over their oil fields. The overthrow of a Iranian president Mosadeq in 1952 is a famous example.

In todays case, the rise in prices is caused, mostly, by Dollar devaluation and it will get much worse. almost two years ago the government stopped publishing the m3 money supply curve, which directly shows how much fiat currency the privatly held federal reserve has printed. In the following year, the money supply increased by 16%.

It is time to push again for Alaskan labor to fill every available job in the oil industry. This will take a combined effort by the state, our learning institutions, the oil companies themselves and most of all
we Alaskans. Get the skills and get the jobs. Get into union apprenticeship programs, take classes,
whatever it takes, get the jobs. The oil industry pays well and it takes a lot of money to live up here.
There will be a large number of construction jobs and infrastructure jobs that will go to people from elsewhere if we don't make the big effort. Fight inflation on the local level - get those good paying jobs and keep the money up here. Sure we know these companies are often crooked as a dogs hind leg, doesn't mean the jobs are bad or the money doesn't spend. The more Alaskans on the payroll the better.

    sosorry: Right on.

Flint Hill and DNR: Get something worked out that keeps the refinery working and gets heating, electrical generation and transportation energy cost for Interior and Western Alaska down to a price everyone can live with.
