JUNEAU -- The shooting of a light-colored black bear in Skagway was probably legal despite a state regulation to protect it, according to state officials.

Skagway resident Thor Henricksen raised a furor June 9 after he shot a so-called glacier bear during hunting season. Many residents believe it was the same bear that was a popular attraction around town.

Last year they successfully lobbied the state Board of Game to pass a law that banned the taking of a white black bear.

State biologists determined that the bear that was shot was not fully white and therefore not protected under the regulation.

Good Shot. Any Bear "around town" is a danger to Human Beings. Hope he enjoys many a dinner with the kill.

Agree with you. If the shot was legal, good hunting!
