Sound of freedom

June 21, 2008

To the editor:

This morning I was sleeping in on a Saturday and with the weather so nice my bedroom window is open. I woke up to the sound of freedom. I live in North Pole and the flight pattern of the jets from Eielson fly over my house.

My boss mentioned that some people complain because of the noise that the jets make and that was his answer to them: “That is the sound of freedom.”

To those who are serving our country to make our lives safer, thank you very much. For those that feel the need to complain, I hope you recognize that what these men and women do for us allows you the freedom to complain.

Second that! Much better than the sound of bombs going off outside your window.

The sounds of freedom people must have the same letter writing campaign people as Al Sokitas. Yes, yes, jets equal freedom. We got it.

I thought the voice of dissent was the sound of freedom?

No...the voice of dissent is the action of a coward who does not have the spine to FIGHT for freedom!!

Hey, I 2nd AKmommie. I'd much rather hear OUR fighter jets outside my window during routine manuevers than enemy bombs exploding!

right wt...I hear ya. Too many people think FREEDOM equates to FREE SPEECH. Try being the men and women, who risk their lives every day to keep us FREE.

Sadly, Americans (some Americans) are spoiled and take our rights, privileges, Freedom for granted.

so all of our forefathers are cowards because they all had voices of dissent? no they are heroes because of their dissent! give me a break you pompous as..s! just because people have differing opinions about a certain subject DOES NOT make them a coward. a coward would be a person who says nothing at all. so you would have people be pathetic sheep following the herd ...sounds like you should move to a socialist/communist country! where you are forbidden to speak your mind.

So, wtpusher, I guess Jefferson is a coward...since he is the one who stated that dissent is the greatest form of freedom. I guess I will have to scratch his picture from our history books, what a lousy yellow SOB.

We sit here and whine about the noise they make, they are doing a JOB, TRAINING to fight the REAL thing, and all we can do is whine about the noise? Give me a break. Those men and women are working hard to keep the war over there and NOT on our soil. Let them train! Live with the noise....They are doing US a service and we need to be more respectful.

Oh for crying out loud. You choose to live in a community that is closely affiliated with a major army post AND a major air force base. It doesn't take a rocket surgeon or brain scientist to figure out that the army shoots guns and the airforce flys airplanes, and both make noise.

If you move next door to a hog farm you expect to smell pig manure.

If you move next to a whorehouse you expect to see a little skin once in a while.

If you move to a community near a military installation you should expect to hear a little bit of noise once in a while. Warfare is not, and should not be, a silent occupation.

Oh please. Just because you don't want to get woken up doesn't mean you HATE AMERICA. Fine, it sounds like freedom to you - great. But when one is asleep and is unpleasantly awoken by anything, that "anything" is acceptably described as an annoyance. But to me, saying that engines "sound like freedom" is like saying "a boot in your ass is the American way". Catchy, but hardly meaningful.
Simply put, I don't care what it sounds like to anyone else and if you're happy about it, more power to you. I just don't see why everyone has to think it "sounds like freedom".
Yeah, yeah - I know. I'm a communist loving terrorist hugger. Whatev.

Of course those voices of dissent were willing to lay their lives on the line, not claim dissent then run and hide. Do not compare your idea of dissent with our forefather's who had a price on there head, your not even close.

I doubt that anyone here is claiming to be a hero of the magnitude of Mr. Jefferson, but calling dissenters anti-American is so ironic I don't see how it can be lost on the "Sound of Freedom" crowd.

Maybe the sound of their boots slapping the pavement after each goose step is deafening them?

If the Air Force would get real and scrap all that old 'we need a man in the cockpit' crap it could move on to un-piloted aircaft entirely. Then practice could be done on or by a computer saving lives, fuel and our peace and quiet. Our military aircraft would be lighter, cheaper, more fuel-efficient and could fly faster, higher and be more maneuverable if the pilots were not aboard.

We wouldn't need a bunch of allied aircraft invading our airspace to practice here either.

The US Department of Defense is already the single largest user of fuel in the world so a little less fuel usage wouldn't hurt our national budget either.

Oh, and yes, I served in the Air Force and love the sound of a nice fast jet going by.

i like the fighter jets. those are just plain cool. it's those trains and the horns that will drive you batty. especially since they go by my house (a block away) usually around 12:30am blaring their horns. dissent is ok as long as you are right. if you are just dissenting because it is your opinion like being an antiwar or an eco-freak, then your just a whiner. you may want to consider that at the time, our countries forefathers may have been whiners. but the willingness to put their lives on the line for their beliefs says something. todays whiners just seem to want to spit out their rhetoric and then go off to a tea party and pat themselves on the backs for how morally superior they are. i'm not impressed.

I live under a flight pattern of an occasional cargo plane that seems to be skimming my roof. I actually like it. Enough with the freedom stuff though.

I adore my three year old, but I grumble when he wakes me up early on a weekend. The alternative to loving "The Sound of Freedom" is not hatred of America. That is simply stupid. The old Soviet Union and Soviet Block countries had jets and tanks and other equipment that made lots of noise and that certainly wasn't a "Sound of Freedom". Those citizens certainly weren't able to write into a newspaper to complain.
So here are some facts. 1. I love my country. 2. I spent 25 years in the military, the majority as an aircraft maintainer. 3. I don't like aircraft noise. 4. Anybody who thinks I am unpatriotic because I get surly when awakend by an aircraft military or otherwise is a moron. 5. I usually get over any surliness caused by aircraft noise in a matter of minutes and move on with my life.

Polarmark says "dissent is ok as long as you are right"

I wonder, just exactly who gets to decide if you are "right"?
By its nature, dissent means that different people have a different idea of what is "right".

But, apparently, if someone doesn't agree with Polarmark, they are just whiners... geez... *shakes head*

I wonder what sounds one might hear if one moves near to an active Air Force Base? If you don't want to hear the sounds of aircraft don't move next to an Air Force Base. You might want to stay away from train tracks too.

polarmark: I loved (not really) your post, wherein you said: Dissent is OK if you're right.

Not to completely echo newsreader, but, really, who are you to decide what's right? What happens if I don't agree with you? If we hold totally opposite opinions, which one of us is "correct", and who gets to decide that?

Are you _really_ suggesting that my opinion doesn't matter unless I'm willing to put my life on the line? If you think so, you're an extremist, and no different than a suicide bomber.

    Think about it.
