Electric rates

To the editor:

Please allow me to add my name to the list of folks thanking GVEA for its recent rate increase. I appreciate the help in spending any extra money that I might have.

Add to that more thanks to Don Young for wanting to raise the gas tax and helping me to spend anything left over after paying GVEA. As far as I’m concerned, he belongs in the same boat as our former governor — arrogant and totally out of touch with Alaska.

I wouldn’t vote for him if he was the only one running.

I also agree. Why can't they do anything right, except take all our money and build something else we can't use?

Seems to me the same solution is needed for GVEA as for Oil producers. The both need more product if they are going to keep prices in line. We need to drill in ANWAR and we need to be building Susnita Hydro project, which would provide long term, relaiable and affordable energy for the entire rail belt of Alaska (85% of Alaska's citizens)

I'm in the $500/mo electric also. Its ridiculous paying this amount when a year ago it was less than half that. Something really needs to be done to lower the prices, the gas surcharge is killing my wallet.

How are you spending 500 month on electric. Same thing happend to me a few years ago. I had them come out and give it a look. Turns out the meter in the garage was malfunctioning (continuously turning)and they fixed it. The bill went way down. I would check on that.

Just think, the same guy that allowed GEVA to get into the current position is now the ENERGY CZAR for the state. Is that putting the fox in the henhouse or what??

why not use 4 to 10 large wind mill to handle 10,000 or more building so GVEA can save money on coal ..............

Yep! When everyone has a wood burning stove to heat and using oil to light their homes whats the outcome when the city wants to make cuts at the fire dept. Ashes. The so called non-profit gvea will charge you for the customers they loose to fire. Next time a election comes up vote in a new regime but first get rid of all that have been on the board for more than 2 years. Some one at gvea is taking all the cookies out of the cookie jar.

sourgoughjoe has nailed the answer ... flush the toilet and get rid of the BOD's folks but don't replace them with the same flavor. The new manager is fresh so give him a strong message and a chance. The past managers are gone but that damage may not be repairable.

Be sure you have a good insurance policy. The real question is how many people may find that a fire is the way to solve their economic problem. If you are paying $500 a month for a small home in summer what in the world do you have plugged in.

Let them fend for themselves. If the government starts to do handouts it will be just another walfare program that was started for the right reasons but was ruined by greed and lazy. People need to start to be responsible for their own actions. I do not mind helping people but I only want to help those that also want to help themself.

my home is 5k sq ft, so its hardly small. we do have a lot of outdated appliances though. also have 5 (?) tvs, 4 computers, a stand up freezer, and electric water heater. I've already switched all the bulbs to the energy efficient ones, and the house is well insulated. I'm not complaining about heat though because I don't really use much compared to some of the other people complaining. I think I was going through about 150 gallons a month, which isn't that bad considering how large the house is.

Vitrox, you should unplug your computers if not in use and your TV's. Do you have a blanket for your water heater? And as for the appliances, unplug the ones that don't have to have a constant source of electricity (microwave etc..) Also when you upgrade look for appliances that are "plain", no clocks or displays that use electricity. These are just some ideas on how to cut down on that electric bill. Any electrical device that has a sleep mode when turned "off" is like having that device on. Good luck on cutting down on the kilowatts.

nightwolf1: what exactly is the kw requirement for appliances that are not turned on, and how many mw (thats milliwatts) are necessary to run those clocks - COME ON!

This is the type of lunacy that is plaguing our nation.

Real Answer... DEAL WITH THE PROBLEMS, not side track people into secondary issues that make almost no difference.
