Bodies of two adults found on Fort Wainwright
Published Wednesday, June 4, 2008
Fort Wainwright police are investigating the deaths of two adults on base earlier this week.
The cause of death has yet to be determined. Fort Wainwright spokeswoman Linda Douglass said she could not release any more information about the deceased, pending notification of next of kin.
More information should be released in the next day or two, Douglass said.

Gee, I'm glad the military took their time and released such a comprehensive explanation of this tragic event.
Hey outraged - what makes you think you are owed an explanation - even AST, FPD, etc. sometimes take time releasing info - especially during crime investigations.
The Military is still investigating and can not rule on the cause of death intil the autopsy reports are back. It would have been totally wrong to say the cause of death was cause by this or that when they dont know for sure. As for the names being released to the public, we know who it was but out of respect for the family until they are all notified nothing more can be released. To the families of the Soldier and Wife lost my heart goes out to you and you are in my prayers. This was a great soldier and a loving wife who was well known to Ft Wainwright and this is a sad loss for the community!!!!
I just hope that the newsminer follows up on this story better than they have on the toddler beating (a story that they are now, apparently, burying).
Condolences to any who knew the deceased. I hope that justice will be served in this case, whatever that may be.
I don't think I'm owed an explanation.
I want to know it wasn't an event with public health/safety implications.
I'll wait for the next Trooper release that says "earlier this week" for the time of an event.
How terribly sad :( My heart and prayers go out to their families!!
This was my neighbor. I'd love to know why they are both dead too. Rumor has it that it was a homicide suicide.
Thanks for passing along the rumor!! Man that really makes me miss Army Housing. If they want to solve the case quicker just ask the busy bodies in the neighborhood. They can get the time of death and reason faster than CSI.
There is a lot of adult bodies on Fort Wainwright. What's your point?
The_Truth...some people just lost very important people in their lives. Don't come in here being disrespectful.
Let's just remember that whatever the cause or reason (which is not inportant) that these families need prayers and our love right now so we should really be praying and seeing what we can do to help the family of the deceased or thier friends with this tragic happening. My heart goes out to all the soldiers and thier families out at Fort Wainwright right now, I know many of them and thier a close knit community. LOVE TO ALL AND PEACE IN JESUS CHRIST'S NAME....
I am sure Linda Douglas, the Public Affairs officer on Post will issue a press release when more info is available - and when there is more than rumors involved. But the question I ask myself - do I need to know who or why? Let the Army do their job, and let friends and families grieve. The Army can do a good job, and will of invesitgating this incident.
Same goes for all the local law enforcement agencies. Just my opinion (coure in my job I work with law enforcement officers so I am a little prejudiced and protective of them).
I don't work with them but I sure do trust them... with time and God's understanding we'll understand someday why? God bless everyone !!! as we're a small knit community (Fairbanks and Fort Wainwright) and we're all affected one way or another by things like this and we all hurt in our own ways... love and prayers to the TROOPS of Fort Wainwright...
AKARMYWIFE...Being their neighbor, I would expect you to have a little common decency and respect to not spread rumors. We should wait for the cause of death to be announced by Army Officials, no more "rumor has it" please! Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the couple.
Since when does a reporter have to rely on a PR person to "release more information in a day or two"? You do have reporters on staff, don't you? You know, the kind that go out and ask people questions, and report?
In the situation of an ongoing investigation of a major crime it's rather unethical (and potentially illegal) to report additional information if the family of the victims hasn't been notified. Plus the military has a minimum 24 hour "window" after they notify the family before releasing the names.
I'm not spreading rumors it happened right across the street from me, I was there when they questioned neighbors, you'd be pretty damn curious too if you woke up to sirens screaming outside the window and an MP parked in front of your house. I wanted to know for mine and my neighbors safety, it wasn't until they started coming around asking neighbors questions and CID showed up and they finally wheeled the bodies out that we knew what had happened. I didn't say anything more than what AkLown pointed out was passed along in the neighborhood. My thoughts have been on those people ever since, I drive by it and look at it every day now and it saddens me and I think about how the family will have to come and clean it out and have to go through the grieving process, it's a horrible thing and everyone in this neighborhood is grieving alongside them.
AKARMYWIFE... I cant believe you would get on here and write something that incredibly STUPID! I personally have heard a million rumors, its pretty funny that "neighbors" know what happen when the investigators dont even know until the autopsy's come back. As for the reporter saying it was earlier this week, it was yesterday morning, the newsminer made it seem like it was a while ago.To my suprise it was released right away.As for the comment above about the details only important if its a public cencern..rest to sure ITS NOT at all a treat to the public! As for friendly_fairbanks COMMENT...THANK YOU!!! Your very right even though not all of us worked with him, we have all been affected by this sad loss of a great couple!
flyer - give it a rest - give the investigation a chance to work - would you prefer any investigation be compromised? Linda Douglas is a lot more than just a "PR" person. She's a dedicated professional that has done a heck of a job over the years keeping the community involved and updated.
What folks in the civilian community don't know, don't realize, or some don't care to know or care to realize is the military has set procedures to follow as do all governmental agencies - let the system work - and how bout trusting the system for a change. And for all you conspiracy and cover up theorists, oh well keep on posting your comments.
I am curious by all the interest generated in this story - or is it just folks being nosey.
Wow, so I'm not going to let myself be attacked by you akarmystrykerwife and I'm sure this will be deleted but again it's not a rumor and it's no more information then what will be released eventually. You want the detials I can give you the details. Either he killed her and killed himself, she killed him and killed herself or he died and she killed herself but when they (CID) start asking if anyone heard any fighting or yelling then obviously something was not entirely right and I hate to tell you but it's a cold reality that the army messes alot of people up in the head. I'm not demeaning their deaths, it's horribly horribly tragic and I for one am personally haunted by it but just because it happened on a military base does not mean that it's classified information.
Akarmywife, Rumors are just that...rumors. I don't know why you would come on here and post a rumor about why and how other people died. Have some common courtesy, what if these peoples parents/family/friends read the newsminer online? And they just read what you wrote? What if the autopsies come back and it wasn't a murder suicide?
I would hope that you are concerned, and that your just not a snoopy neighbor who didn't know anything about your poor neighbors, and are jumping to conclusions.
I am sorry but I have been an Army wife for over 18 yrs and I just can't see you as an army wife, or as a caring citizen would ever post something like that in a public forum.
To the Family & friends of this couple, I am so sorry for your loss.
Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal.
Well CrazySally I'm sorry you feel that way but I am an army wife AND a caring citizen and it's called freedom of speech.
I'm sure Ms. Douglass is very professional, but she IS a PR person.
I work for the government too, and yes sometimes it is our job to "work through procedures", but it is the job of the press to investigate and report the news, sometimes if necessary by short circuiting those procedures, and more power to them when they do.
The Newsminer reports "by press release" way too often. I'd rather not rely on a government press release to hear about what is happening, even if it is from my own agency.
First of all, if you don't live the housing complex that the tragic event took place in then you have no business knowing what is going on until the press releases it's statement. Being a neighbor and friend to the deceased I would appreciate if you would give them as well as their families the respect they deserve. No one knows what happend, that's why it's called an investigation. This is a very tragic event that has taken place and all people care about is spreading rumors. And it is quite a shock when you wake up to the sounds of fire trucks, MP, and rescue units sirens going off. Then to have CID come bang on your door asking questions. Unless you've actually experienced it then you don't quite fully understand. And when had there not been rumors floating around? People choose to believe what the want or what they think is right. However, until the investigation and autopsies are conducted and finished we won't know what happend to the victums. I just think it's a damn shame how the new-miner posted it up in the paper a day after it took place, as if there wasn't enough DRAMA going on anyway. I do agree with crazysally and what she said, Rumors are just that and until you know the facts, don't assume. And even if you kinda know what is going on then you shouldn't be giving out to much information that even investigators haven't even release to the public yet. If it was your family member would you want someone else doing the same thing? So just because someone else lashes out at you doesn't give you the right to tell what you possibly think you know it just adds more fuel to the fire.
AKarmywife... way to miss the point. No one wanted your "details." You're a gossip, and it's disgraceful. You have no way of knowing what happened. It is the investigators' job to consider ALL possibilities; for them to ask whether anyone heard fighting doesn't mean that's what happened. Have some common sense, and some common decency to stop perpetuating rumors even after people called you on it.
AKARMYWIFE-
Freedom of speech does have some responsibility with it. Mainly distinguishing between fact and opinion. Everything you have stated may be, in fact, your experience yesterday, however, that does not make what you infer or conjecture reality. So please, quit gossiping and spreading rumors under the pretense of freedom of speech. Further, you are casting a wide net with the circumstances you posit. That is called a shotgun approach. You throw it all out there and when one little detail comes back as correct or accurate you shout from the rooftops 'I told you so!'. Juvinile gossip technique. Grow up.
Well the official results will be out eventually, provided the army releases them so regardless as every other person seems to point out I'll shut my "gossiping mouth" and wait for them. It's sad that expressing my opinion is viewed as irresponsible under the rights guaranteed to me as a U.S. Citizen, I don't believe anywhere in the First Amendment it said that a majority has to deem something "right" or "responsible" before you can say it. Oh wait thats right, there was one once, it was called the Sedition Act and thankfully that was struck down as unconstitutional.
I am hoping someone here can help me. I am from Indiana and my son, who is stationed in Hawaii, has a very good friend who is stationed there. We are trying to get some information on his friend who died on base. The deceased brother came to our house yesterday and informed us that his brother had died and his wife too. Anyway, my son is wanting information. My son had talked to his friend there on saturday and is having a very hard time trying to figure this out. Since the newspaper is not releasing any names, could someone here verify the initials of the deceased as B.B.? This may help me confirm that this story is about the soldier that we knew and I can maybe keep up on the information posted in the paper?
Thank you.
To those who have posted comments exspressing their condolences, I thank you, for those jumping on the rumour mill, get a life. I am the father of the deceased, She was a caring and loving person who cherished her family and loved her husband. I too am waiting for the investigation to conclude, but either way of the outcome, she was my daughter, and me and my family loved her deeply, this was a tragic event, that could of been avoided. Please keep your opinions to yourself and let my family and the family of her husband grieve without the so-called innuendo that always follows stories like this, again for the people who knew them and realized how special they were thank you for the prayers and thoughts.
my heart goes out to the families. I never knew your daughter, but we did know her husband, he was a wonderful person and will be missed terribly.
Concernedandsad,
I knew both of them, they were great neighbors and they will truly be missed. I am still trying to get over the inital shock of this all. My family express our deepest condolences to your families in this time of sorrow.
I am so sorry for the families of the people who died. I can't imagine the grief they must be feeling. The intrusion of press and people who are more interested in good gossip over the fence than minding their own business just adds to their grief. I would like to think that those who have left negative comments about this situation never thought the family of one of the victims would see the comment.
all of you should jump off akarmywife's back. she does have a right to say what she wants and she does have the most plausible cause of death... weren't all of you complaining about the story not fullfilling your gossip needs anyway? akarmystrykerwife-your one of those people who want to hug everybody aren't you? some people don't care ok so get off your high horse. to everyone-people die. yes it is a part of life, we feel sorry, we're sad, we're nosy, and unfortunatly we get to hear everything that someone says about it to. it's a shame that the father came on here and had to see all this crap... just putting this out here, i'm ready for the verbal abuse this will generate.
Unfortunately some people use their "right" to say hurtful and unnecesary things.
My heart goes out to the families, I am sorry for your loss.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you Concernedandsad! They will be greatly missed by all of us!
thoughts and prayers are with the families
I love it when ignorant people try to play the "Freedom of Speech" card. Think about what the First Amendment actually says. The government isn't censoring your right to speak so give it a rest. We're just calling you out for being a tactless gossip monger.
This probably the only time I will defent the News-miner in regard to their reporters or their professionalism...
...when it comes to military installations (post or AFB), the PR (Linda, in this case) is the ONLY source of information that can be contacted, no other departments, units, etc. are allowed to comment, not even off the record. In short, if Ft. Wainwright doesn't want you to know, you aren't told. Period.
This is unfortunate when it comes to the mysterious deaths of those living on post or base, because others who reside in the area have a right to at least know if their lives are in immediate jeopardy or may become disrupted. However, I do see how this is a necessary precaution by those in command.
The News-miner can no more get details than the next person, so in this instance, I can empathize. There is an on-going "rumour" about 2 or more infant/toddler deaths on post involving some type of window shade, but we haven't heard a peep from post, ... could be true, could not be true, ... unfortunately, we will know when command wants us to know.
Concernedandsad, I know that you and your family will remember all the memories of your daughter. My children are my foundation and I cannot imagine losing them at any time. I hope that you have the support that is needed.
Freedom of speech? OK, here is my freedom of speech in action. The cruel people who want good gossip are an example of what is wrong with our society as a whole. God keep them from ever having to deal with something like this with their children. There is nothing in the world that is worse than the loss of a child. No one should have to experience that, not even people who are truly evil for the awful things they have posted here. Or maybe they should have to live through that. It might make them realize how much it hurts to first lose a child and then have to read speculation from people who have room temperature IQs on what happened and why.
You should be ashamed of yourselves. That is my freedom of speech.
Catfight on the internet! Amazing! AKARMYWIFE and AKARMYSTRYKERWIFE.... you two women should be in support of one another, not against! AND... quit the gossip, both of you.
Point well taken anya
Here's a little history lesson for anyone not smart enough to keep thier gossip to themselves.
October 1993 Mogideshu Somalia
American Soldiers were killed and drug through the streets of the city. The wonderful press splashed the scene on every available venue. The families had not been contacted. The wives and children learned of thier husband's/ father's death by seeing them drug through the streets.
ENJOY YOUR FREEDOM OF SPEECH you earned it.
I live in the same building 4236, and I can't say anything regarding Mr. and Mrs. Bays' deaths. However, all I can say is, they looked so happy together. They always hold hands, and I always see comfort and joy in their marriage. Faith was a great woman. Whenever she sees me, she always say 'hi'. I still remember when Benjamin asked me for a cigarette. I didn't know he had health problems, until Faith told me. I felt bad at that time, because I gave him a cigarette. That was 2 months ago. I don't know them that well, but I truly believe they're in God's hands right now. Rest In Peace Mr. and Mrs. Bays. You both will always be remembered in my prayers. Alofa atu.

AKARMYWIFE, there's a difference between FREEDOM OF SPEECH and an OUT-OF-CONTROL GOSSIPING WITHOUT A BRAIN MOUTH.
Thank you graceless. And to Faith's dad, I'm sorry for your loss, my thoughts are with you.
