Man faces assault charges over parking space spat on campus

Published Thursday, May 15, 2008

A 40-year-old Fairbanks man has been charged with two counts of misdemeanor assault based on an allegation he threatened to shoot a couple who reportedly stole his parking space.

Larry Garritt Anderson owns a pistol but did not have it in his vehicle, according to a document filed in Fairbanks District Court.

The incident happened Monday on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus, the document stated.

An argument preceded the threat, UAF Police Chief Sean McGee said. The complainants, a man and a woman, told police that Anderson reached under the seat of his pickup as he made the threat.

McGee said shooting threats are taken seriously considering the tragedies that have happened on college campuses Outside. Six officers were assigned to the case.

“It’s a different environment, so we take things seriously,” he said of gun incidents on campus. “We throw a lot of people at it.”

When police showed up at Anderson’s house, he was contrite, McGee said.

“He understood this wasn’t the appropriate way to handle the situation,” the police chief said.

McGee said the two people threatened “were very afraid.”

At least the campus cops didn't shoot at anyone this time.

No kidding. It happened in the Eielson lot. There were hundreds of empty parking spaces in the Nenana lot, and it was lovely out. Anderson sounds like a textbook example of what my wife calls "the Alaskan Man-Boy."

The campus cops did a fine job on this. Also, some quick thinking person got his plate number and a good description of his vehicle. It's hard to remember to get a plate when something exciting/scary is happening, but it makes a huge difference if you can.

Man, I hate it when people steal my spot.

Not the way to handle the situation, but you have to admit that at some time you have wanted to wring a spot stealers neck.

Now, how should that situation be handled? Sure, whats the big deal, its just a parking spot, but there is a certain perscentage of the population that rudely walks all over the rest of the population. They do nothing illigal but they are just jerks. If you say something about it all the sudden you are the bad guy. Know what I mean? Say someone cuts in line at the theater, you say something, now you are the jerk for not letting someone cut. Doesnt seem right.

Given the guy's behavior, I'm not willing to accept that the victims really did steal his spot. The Eielson lot is one lane, one-way. They could have swiped it while he was trying to back in, but this guy doesn't sound like the backing-in type. People who back in are planning for the future. This guy lacks foresight.

    >Now, how should that situation be handled?

Find another parking space. First pretty girl walks by, you'll forget all about it.

    >If you say something about it all the sudden you are the bad guy. Know what I mean? Say someone cuts in line at the theater, you say something, now you are the jerk for not letting someone cut.

Okay, yeah, sometimes you can't help saying something. Try to make it funny. If you lose your composure, you just end up feeling worse. Also, it's when you lose your cool that other people think you're a jerk. It doesn't matter if you're right or wrong--they turn against you because you seem weak. People are like dogs in that respect. But if you say something funny, you're a hero! Even if you're wrong!

UAF has terrible parking. They'll keep spending millions and millions on new buildings they don't need, but they refuse to build a parking garage. They don't want to kill their cash cow.

So this guy now gets to impact the tax payer more by fighting his charges with a public defender.
If convicted he should be required to pay back cost of representation, even if they just take his dividends

Good idea hckywtchr, but that goes against the idea of public defenders. It'd be best if he pleads no contest and asks for no PD.

He has already plead not guilty at arrangments

Part of restitution should be repayment of a portion of attorneys fees.

If you read the court convictions you will see the same names come up again and again. Count how many times you read the name Cofey in the convictions.

Where would you put this parking garage?

Off subject a bit, but a friend of mine was threatened with gun violence in the dorms by one of UAF's own members of it's "prestigeous" rifle team! It wasn't taken seriously though, it was a good laugh. I mean how could you take them seriously, the rifle team, I mean! They couldn't kill anything but time anyway!
