Two split $1,000 Crime Stoppers reward

Published Saturday, May 10, 2008

Fairbanks Crime Stoppers is awarding $1,000 to two people who helped police arrest a couple suspected of more than a dozen break-ins in the Interior and Anchorage. The money will be split evenly between Amanda Mortensen, a junior at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and a friend of her boyfriend, Othaniel Cooper.

After a laptop and other items were stolen from her car April 28, Mortensen tracked down the suspects with the aid of her friends and family and the security team of Fred Meyer East. Cooper spotted the suspects’ car later that night and notified police, leading to the arrests of Jason Bradley Brisson, 31, and Brenda Audry Rodgers, 41.

Anchorage Crime Stoppers were offering a reward for information leading to the couple’s arrests, but they told Mortensen she wasn’t eligible for the money because she contacted Fairbanks police first.

Somehow I cannot believe that the DNM printed the names of the individuals that turned these crooks in. So now, the crooks know EXACTLY who turned them into the authorities!! It just doesnt seem very wise of the police, in releasing the names, or the Newsminer for printing them.

Wow talk about STUPIDITY on your part. If you had read this story before you would have known that the Newsminer had asked her permission to print her name. She said yes to make it a more personal, interesting story but didn't want her picture taken. Second with charges being brought against the couple who broke into her car, I am sure during trial that their names or at least the young lady's name is there. Seeing as it was her car they broke into. Plus this wasn't like a case of 'violence' really, just lots of robberies. The couple broke into cars when no one was around.

And on top of it all, APD won't pay out a reward because they didn't get a first shot at the arrest? There is something wrong with this all around.

sarvissa - Anchorage Crime Stoppers and Anchorage Police Department (APD) are two completely separate organizations that just happen to work together towards a common goal.

Besides, the crimes were commited in Fairbanks. I think APD would be a wee bit "off the reservation" if they were trying to solve a Fairbanks case.

It's great that Crime Stoppers paid the reward as they were about to give themselves a less than good reputation. As to the names of the
victims, these of course are openly availble as it's a case that is tried in a public court, and that list of names is apparently going to get very, very, very long because of their high volume of theft activities. We should all follow this case & see how many events APD has against them as it was full time employment for those two. So far
this case has had a lot of interest & opinions from us the public. I sure would like to see these two criminals receive some serious "extended stay" privilges on my tax money. It's just plain worth it to have people like that "gone".
